Well its a longer video today, so I thought I'd upload early to give you plenty of time to watch it! 😅. Things didn't start off going to plan, but I looked at where I'd gone wrong and made some slight adjustments and that's all it took to make it all work out in the end.
An absolutely fantastic video mate. I wish they still had barbel populations like that in the Upper Gt. Ouse in Buckinghamshire. They're as rare as rucking horse sh*t near me now. Compliments of the hundreds of Otters roaming our stretches. You have more chance of seeing an Otter than a Barbel now. Where is this that you are fishing please?
+1 for the Zander fishing. I've been rewatching some of Matt Hayes and Mick Browns adventures recently, they catch a lot of Zander. Such a beautiful fish to look at.
i went to a tackle shop that has been around since the 60's. As kids, we use to ride our bikes 2 hours tp get there. They had poles and lures/tackle no other shop have. Now days, they still have poles and lures no one else carries but the magic was gone. I have been a serious fisherman for 52 years now, since I was 5. My dad taught me, he passed away this year, my brother gave up fishing this year. the drought and lack of maintenance of the local waters, has altered everything. I have seen huge change in my life. Enjoy it all young man.
Chris - Just wanted to say...presentation 10/10....comedic value 10/10 😁😁....education 10/10....thank you so much for improving my technique (nowhere near yours !!) over the last couple of years. I don't pretend to be an expert but through your vids, I have come on 'leaps-and-bounds'[. Heartfelt appreciation mate X X X
Excellent video, really enjoyed it. So miss my river fishing for Barbel....Here in New Zealand the rivers hold Koi carp, Rudd and Perch..The lakes have an abundance of quality Tench.
Absolutely brilliant .i watch your video's from a far .gozo. it brings back fabulous memories of the swale... the wharfe... the aire...and the calder and the nidd . All the best from gozo /malta 👍keep them barbel coming
Chris - some cracking Barbel there - as for standing out in the rain? - we've waited so long it's a joy to do so!! - felt like Andy Dufresne from the Shawshank Redemption when it happened to me!🤣🤣!
Great vid Chris……..like how you covered the fish losses too as all part of angling. Also loved how your accent got broader when talking to your bro on the phone…..haha….we all do it 😝😂
Nice work Chris! Loving all the videos you put out! Easily the my favourite pal! Particularly like the Quirky little streams you fish, looking forward to your next video already pal!
Wish I had a river near me like that but if I had you wouldn’t be able to get near the banks to fish with everyone trying to catch barbel !! Great video again 👍
I saw weeds on your line where the hook straightened. Used to happen to me with carp, they would dash for the weeds after getting hooked. Once in the weeds the sinker would gather weeds and provide a much heavier resistance for the carp to pull against and they would either rip the hook out or straighten the hook. I fixed this by tying the sinker onto the mainline ring of the swivel with some weaker line than my mainline or leader. I usually use 30lbs main, 20lbs leader, so used 12lbs mono to tie the sinker on. This worked and I cut my loss rate down by a huge amount so that it rarely happened anymore.
mate I have lived in New Zealand for over 25 years, I have been watching ya videos for a while and just had to subscribe, I love your new approach to catching river fish. IE jigs and mini jigs with excellent results. Roaming around rivers on ya bike to find the best place to catch. Brilliant footage and commentary, don’t know your name but good on ya Ginger fisherman.😃😃
Loved every minute of your video, especially the analysis of your failures. Greetings from Victoria, Australia, where our carps are humongous, but rubbish to be killed. Mind you our Murray cod will give even you a thrill to catch. Never saw a barbel in my old country across the seas. Cheers
G'day Chris, another enjoyable video mate. Got to love the beautiful Barbel, the same thing happened to me i had the drag set to tight 😂😂 . It was a very large sting ray . Take care mate rnjoy the. Sun it's coming home 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Sya hi to Bro 👍🏼 All the best from Downunder mate.
Fantastic video as usual. love that set up too, i have a very similar feeder rod with 3 different tips and i use the very same 3oz tip for big chub and Barbel.. great balanced feel like you said.. fantastic channel.. keep it up..
Lovely video! Seems like it's about time for me to go out and catch some barbel as well. I mostly fish the river Rhine here in Germany. Due to the strong current we fish very heavy feeder rods (250g) and around 140-160g feeder baskets with spikes. We use Owner or Gamakatsu Barbel Special presnelled hooks. They come with stronger wire gauge and leader than standard for the same hook size. Still sometimes the hooks are bent open. We have to play these barbel hard to keep them off the ground where they would dig into the gravel and break the line. Past years we've used maggots as hook bait but I'd like to try pellets. Any particular flavour you prefer?
@@tomjones7593 It's not really the size of the fish as more the strength of the current causing the demand for this setup. A good size fish would be around 70cm (6-8 lbs) but because they are in this current their whole life they are really strong and they know how to use the current to their advantage. Under normal circumstances the river Rhine has a flow rate of around 1000m³/s at 6 km/h and a depth of something around 3-4m. So there's quite some pressure on the line even without a fish on
Welldone again on a fantastic video Chris Not managed to get on that stretch of river yet this season, but this video has got me going. Do you think a 10ft commercial carp feeder rod would be handle the barbel suitabley
Hi Chris! There are some nice barbel there. I am planning to go to catch my first ever barbel soon. Similar small river, lots of weed. Fish uo to 8-10lb. What strenght of line would you use? What flavour of pellets you usually chuck in to feed? Thank yoy in advance.
Pellets wise, a standard halibut pellet between 2mm and 8mm should work which you can also fish of the hair or banded on. You then get various flavours of pellets but if the fish are hungry they will eat. I fish the river Trent mainly so have scaled up to 15lb mainline due to snags. I would personally aim for 8lb minimum. The pellets being used here are dynamite baits and are either The Source, Complex T or Monster Tigernut due to the red bag, but I would eliminate the last one as I don't think they would be used over the others for barbel fishing. These pellets also come in varying sizes up to pre drilled 21mm and do matching flavoured boilies to go alongside.
Another very enjoyable vid Chris 👌 Highs n Lows of all anglers to lose a couple decent ones but you caught a few lovely Barbel too and 8lb ish is decent by anyones books!!
My mate and i have a funny name for when you miss say a pike run on the float or any bite really when you are taking a wee in the bushes or on the phone ...we say "Cock in Hand" as you can never stop mid flow! 🤣🤣🤣🤦
Just a suggestion and curiosity when you deadbait do you only use native fish just wondering if you've had luck with some of the to me more unsort after sea fish I got smelt and blueys to try for now ?
@@The_ginger_fisherman yeah inad a good winter last year on sardines I was hoping you'd of said something more exotic lol Anyway what you doing replying to me ain't you got videos to make 😜 keep it up matey 👍

My mum and dad's koi have successfully spawned and produced baby koi this year for the 1st time in a long time. (They cross breed with the goldfish every year normally, make some lovely hybrids). That pb pike was had 2nd chuck on a 1/2lb wobbled deadbait rud. It was my last freshly caught bait for that 1 day session. The pike hit the big rud on the drop as the light was fading. Around 45 min battle with showing off some rather uncharacteristic acrobatics for a pike of that size. Tailwalking at about 50 yards out. By the time ive got under the rodtip its really getting dark. I try not to net pike even though ive always got my 40" landing net, just because the trebles make a mess of nets. That storm got me too mate🤣 got wet through and broke my phone🤣 great vid anyway mate
As soon as you go on your telephone you get a bite!! It’s the unwritten rule of fishing!
Exactly right! I intentionally divert my attention away from the rod simply because of this unwritten rule that you get them when you least anticipate
Haha so true! Unbelievable how often that is the case isn't it
Either that or just pouring a coffee or grabbing a quick bite...
I ended up swimming for rod after losing it to a barbel whilst having a pee. Certainly the way of it.
