Known activist Sunny M. Kapikadu discusses the politics of reservation in this presentation as part of Swathanthra Lokam 2015 at Vailopilly Samskriti Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram. He discusses the principle of reservation in the historical context of the Indian Constitution and how is still relevant rather than addressing the arguments of anti-reservation sect.
He begins by the historical situation that is carried into the modern era as not just mindset but a social reality that is a hierarchial pyramid that still oppress a majority. Shocking the usual Indian by exemplifying death of tribal children as the demonstration of our moral gradation, he states the reality that we are like fish in water, unaware of how or why our society is still under the clutches of casteism. The self limiting of our rights and limiting of others' rights as part of our default moral makeup is how this system works. He explains why Dr. Ambedkar's vision for democracy included representation for the secluded class; since they are still oppressed, they need a positive discrimination. The reality of group as well as individual in the Indian condition is pulled into light. In this tour de force, Sunny Kapikadu challenges our perspective of reservation by highlighting the current reality and the non existence of a mere citizen devoid of identities.
He addresses the arguments of anti-reservation sect at the end. Highlighting the poverty of reality in their arguments. The arguments such as possible lack of merit and creamy layer advantage are knocked down by a sheer shot of reality. He also takes questions from the audience.

The argument for reservation benefits for creamy layer is a disservice to the poor members of the reserved communities. Reservation benefits are hijacked by the wealthy sections. If they've 6 lakh annual income they can prepare their children to compete in the general category as anyone else. Let those places go to someone who doesn't have the luxury of earning Rs50,000 per month. Funnily the limit is proposed to be increased to 15 lakh an year. Defending reservation means ensuring that its benefits shouldn't continue to accrue to a selected few indefinitely.
Economic progress can change social structure and hierarchy to an extent. But expecting all divisions of society to collapse is not going to happen under any conceivable situations in the foreseeable future.

പിന്നോക്ക സമുദായകളില്ലേ ഈ പറയുന്ന creamy layer സംവരണം വേണം എന്നുള്ളതിന്റെ തെളിവല്ലേ . അവർ എങ്ങനെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടി ജോലി നേടി ,സംവരണം ഉള്ളത് കൊണ്ടേ മാത്രം ആണ്. ഇനി അവർ സംവരണം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കണം എന്ന് പറയുന്നവർ , ദുൽഖുർ സൽമാൻ മമ്മൂട്ടി യെ പോലെ ചാൻസ് തെണ്ടി യും കഷ്ടപെട്ടും അല്ല സ്റ്റാർ ആയതു അതുകൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങൾ അംഗീകരിക്കില്ല എന്ന് പറയോ...തലമുറകളായി നരകിച്ചു ജീവിച്ചവരുടെ ഒരു ചെറിയ ജനറേഷൻ രക്ഷപെടുമ്പോയേക്കും തല ചൊറിയുന്നവർ നമ്മളെ 100 കൊല്ലം പിന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ ശ്രേമിക്കുകയാണ് .

Everything you said is right but this is not the way of modernism why? It will never help but only help to make caste system strong. Reservation is needed but not on caste basis, this is only because I don't want my fellow humans to join and to join this idiotic club centuries beyond from now.

എന്നാൽ അത് പോരാ എന്നും , പൂർവ്വ വൈരാഗ്യം വെച്ച് , മുന്നോക്ക വിഭാഗത്തെ കീഴ്പ്പെടുത്തണം എന്നും ഉള്ള വൈരാഗ്യം കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം ഇങ്ങനെ വാദിക്കുന്നത് .
ഈ വൈരാഗ്യം ഒരിക്കലും സത്യസന്ധത അല്ല എല്ലാവരും ഒരു പോലെ മുന്നേറുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹം ആയിരിക്കേണം നമ്മൾ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് . അല്ലാതെ പഴയ പുരാണം പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് , ഒരു പുതിയ വരേണ്യ വർഗ്ഗത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചാൽ അത് സാമൂഹ്യ വിപ്ലവം അല്ല . ചൂഷണം ആണ് .
വേദങ്ങൾ പഠിച്ചാൽ ഇന്ന് ആർക്കും ജോലി കിട്ടില്ല . ആധുനിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം അനുസരിച്ചാണ് ഇന്ന് ജോലി ലഭിക്കുക . ആധുനിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഉണ്ടായ കാലം മുതൽ അവര്ണനും അത് ഇൻഡ്യയിൽ പ്രാപ്യം ആണ് . അംബേദ്‌കർ തന്നെ പഠിച്ചത് നോക്കിയാൽ മതിയാവും .
"വെറുപ്പും വൈരാഗ്യവും " പക്വത അല്ല . അത് ഒരിക്കലും സമൂഹത്തിനു നന്മ തരില്ല സമൂഹത്തെ ചൂഷണം ചെയ്യുവാൻ ആണ് ഇദ്ദേഹവും ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്

അധഃസ്ഥിത വിഭാഗങ്ങളോടുള്ള ജാതീയമായ വേർതിരിവ് അവരോടുള്ള ംഅവഗണന അത് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാൻചില സവർണ ർഇന്നും തയ്യാറാവുന്നില്ല മറിച്ച് .. എന്നാൽ ജാതി സംവരണത്തെ എതിർക്കുന്നു. ഇതിൽ നിന്നും വ്യക്തമാകുന്നു അധഃസ്ഥിത ജനത ഒരിക്കലും ഉയർന്നു വരരുത് എന്ന ആപഴയ ഫ്യൂഡൽ മനോഭാവം തന്നെയാണ് ഇരുമ്പ് മറ നീക്കി പുറത്തു വന്നു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത് മദ്ധ്യ തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലും പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ചില പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഇന്നും കാണാവുന്നതാണ്
