I think the BEST use for amiibo is in Splatoon 3 specifically. Back in Splatoon 2, not only could you get special gear take photos with the characters with your saved gear, you could also do it on any stage in the game, but ONLY in 4 preset locations. In Splatoon 3, you still get special gear, but your saved gear goes from 1 slot to 5 extra slots AND you can take photos with the characters on all stages in ANY location you want on the map! I make Splatoon videos and I’m ALWAYS using the amiibo to take photos with for thumbnails. On top of ALL of this, ANY of the Splatoon Idol amiibo from any group, Squid Sisters/Off The Hook/Deep Cut allow you to travel back in time and revisit the Grand Festival Plaza in all times of day AND skip songs to hear the song of your choosing. Grand Festival was such a special time and being able to go back and relive those memories is such a great treat. In Splatoon 2, you could take photos with Pearl and Marina during Splatfests up on stage with them, and there was special poses you could do only during FinalFest. I didn’t get my Pearl and Marina amiibo until years later and Nintendo NEVER updated Splatoon 2 to be able to travel back in time to a Splatfest Plaza. Splatoon 1 had this and Splatoon 3 has this, but Splatoon 2 never did. It’s a moment I’ll never be able to experience, so I’m happy Splatoon 3 has so many practical uses for the series amiibo. My hope for Splatoon 4 is to be able to scan any series amiibo and get special weapon alts, such as a Peach themed Brella, Samus arm canon themed Splattershot Pro and much more. I really wish more amiibo got this much attention instead of just being “scan this and get an extra healing item lol”
I have nearly all amiibo, excluding the very very rare ones like gold Mario or weird ones like this... Altair??? one,... I want many more. A history museum of so many characters I met in my life and experienced so many adventures with them.... i so love amiibos ❤ The Banjo-Kazooie amiibo is my absolute favorite one... because.... they came back to were they were born and where they belong to... ❤
Can't believe it's been over 18yrs since the Wii was out, over 20yrs for the Nintendo DS, over a decade since the Amiibos, and many more anniversaries within Nintendo games. Definitely feeling nostalgic! It's also been just over 34 years since Super Mario World came out. Great episode! Glad I have been collecting older games lately as well.
A neat detail about the Switch Super Bowl ad that you guys didn't mention is that Believer was released the same day as that trailer. So that trailer was the first time most people were hearing that song
I loved that Mario movie. I quote it all the time. "Was she corpulent? Very corpulent?" "No, she was just very round" It also started my love of the word "evolution" in the 4th grade, preparing me to become the Pokemon Trainer I am today!
I think Stellar Blade is a lock for BOTY and there's no question, here's why: 1. Dat butt 2. The added photo mode 3. A skin for Eve of 2B (arguably BOTY of the century) 4. Dat butt I rest my case.
Going off of Kit’s idea for a tabletop game with amiibo, I think Nintendo should basically do that but as a video game. So maybe you would have a group of like 10 amiibo on your side, and if you only have 1 amiibo it would just be duplicates of that 1, but then you can diversify your side with more amiibo if you want.
I never really got caught up with Amiibo mainly for the cost side of things. Plus lacking space to keep them. Almost wish Nintendo leaned more on Amiibo cards but i understand it doesn't quite have the same novelty.
1:50:00 The hardware announcement she most likely talked about was the white all-digital Xbox Series X 2TB model, that already released and nobody cares about! =P
50:24 I’ve worked in a store in retail as the head of its inventory for 10 years. It’s incredibly annoying to have to hold onto product that you can’t clearance or send back. And gets in your way more than you’d think.
They've obviously never worked retail or a service industry type of job. Kit and Krysta are the type of people to go to a restaurant, asked the waiter what each and every single ingredient is on an entree, then get mad at the waiter for now knowing every ingredient even though it's suppose "their job".
I’ve been slowly collecting Amiibo since 2015. My goal’s to have one of every smash character (doesn’t have to be smash series as long as they’re compatible). I’m a little under halfway done. Soooo I should be done in 2033! 😂
I have to agree that Disney Infinity definitely lacked substance, but Skylanders on the other hand especially Giants was an incredibly fun game that I would even consider a hidden gem on the Wii
I've always had weird feeling about Amiibos... I kinda swore early on I wouldn't be much of an adopter for it in terms of its use in unlocking secrets in games... but I like the idea of just Nintendo figure merch... but as nice as some are, they are very small, kinda cheap, not very detailed... I wanted stuff like this but bigger and more detailed that other third party people do. Sometimes Amiibo would break the mold and be larger than normal, and those are must haves, but the regular standard size were not really super appealing to me.
I still have all of my Skylanders in a big bin and my two-year-old has fallen in love with them! I'm excited to play through all of the games with her once she's a little older
Kind of crazy to think that 10 years ago they announced amiibo and said "we're gonna make one of these for every character" with Smash and that's continued for so long that we only just recently received the final character-based amiibo with Sora
I have like 160 Amiibo. I never used them in games, but man are they fun to collect! I wish I had more to be honest. I know I’m missing 100 or more Amiibo.
I have the Ice Climbers amiibo and the Warp Star Kirby amiibo. I plan on getting Super Mario Bros. Luigi, Super Mario Bros. Daisy, Jigglypuff and Duck Hunt eventually.
I do think another reason amiibos don't have much of a use is because how easy it is to make "fake" ones, just the NFC chips are everywhere online and very cheap.
i have all of the animal crossing amiibo figures; as a huge animal crossing fan, it makes for a nice collection (: also fun to use for happy home paradise. my other favorite amiibo is the link's awakening one. so cute. still sad they didn't make a zelda one for echoes of wisdom. but my other favorite is the princess zelda + loftwing one from skyward sword! that one is soo good.
I was in fourth grade when amiibo came out. I went to GameStop the day they released and got Mario. I planned to get all the smash bros ones and now about 10 years later I am missing about 13. The light is at the end of the tunnel for me.
I loved the idea of Amiibo, but for the longest time, I felt I was missing out because the only Amiibo I had for the longest time was Pikachu. And Pokemon Amiibo, famously, didn't really work in anything that wasn't Super Smash Bros. Even in Yoshi's Woolly World, all you got was a generic Yoshi with an Amiibo T-shirt iirc.
I think there's a big difference between "new hardware is backwards compatible with old software" and "supporting old hardware" and the question seems to be about the latter in part
So I've gone fully in with digital media for some years now and I maintain that it's, not only, more convenient, but also, guarantees preservation more. Yes they COULD just pull the rug out from under me one day but that would take a lot of legal change for it to be worth the repercussions. There's been very very few shut downs and each has either fully refunded (eg. Stadia) or provided alternative platforms or offline downloads to keep. HOWEVER - I am often jealous of how lovely collections, and collectors editions, look... But starting now... From 0... Just isn't worth it. I have a massive digital collection across many platforms. I'm happy with the ease of access as a trade off.
Something I always wonder about is why they never made a Pokéball amiibo. Tap it to your controller and download a Pokémon into for use in various games. It's so perfect and yet they never thought to do it which annoys me.
1:16:17 this is why I had to sell my copy off. I felt disconnected with my party members and would get confused easily because I couldn't see them. And I wish monsters were in the overworld so you could avoid them and explore if you prefer. Hopefully the PC modding community will fix some of these issues.
I have so many amiibo! My first two amiibo were the Smash Bros Mario and Yoshi amiibo back when Super Smash Bros for Wii U was first released in 2014! I remember having birthday money to buy them, too, lol. I remember I was too young and had to wait for Super Smash Bros For Wii U for Christmas that year and all I could do with the amiibo I had was get a Mii Racing Suit on Mario Kart 8. To this day, I still have these two Mario and Yoshi amiibo and I now own many variations of both of these characters! I have the Yarn Yoshi Amiibo (except Mega Yarn Yoshi), The Mario Maker 30th Anniversary Amiibo (both classic and modern mario) the Super Mario series versions of these characters and Silver Mario! Mario and Yoshi are my favorite because they are the two amiibo compatible with the most games other than Super Smash Bros.
I worked retail for pretty much all of Toys to Life, and it was crazy how bad Animal Crossing bombed Amiibo. I always wondered if it it did well in Japan or if it was a total flop.
I have a Smash Pikachu amiibo I hope will work with the upcoming 'Pokémon Z-A'... I also have a Player 1 Cloud amiibo sealed in the box, which I will only open if it works with 'FF7: Rebirth' on the Switch successor (fingers crossed)... 'Monster Hunter Generations' provided waaay more free DLC than 'Shovel Knight' for the 3DS and only 'Shovel Knight' received an amiibo? Guessing when the amiibo hype died down nobody wanted a physical 'Monster Hunter Rise' amiibo (NFC's were getting bootlegged) which resulted in 'Monster Hunter Wilds' not coming to the Switch. For the want of an amiibo a series was lost... if you catch my DRIFT, lol.
I remember when Amiibo first launched and thought it was Nintendo trying to create their own Disney Infinity inspired game but with Nintendo characters 😂
The story is not "really good" in Dragon Quest III, I regret to say. It's very much a gameplay-first RPG.😅 DQIV and V would be the ones to really start pursuing story. But it's still excellent and one of the oldest RPGs still worth playing!

I can't put Wukong into GOTY running because I haven't beaten it yet but what I have played, I was very very impressed given I am not into games like this because they are too difficult for me. And yeah DLC for GOTY is BS... the whole Game Awards is getting into weird controversy after controversy for variety of reasons...
Oh I found a person who likes Wukong ..have you looked into the end chapter animation lore? 😊 I really love each end chapter animation..I am also never into games like this..I am in last chapter final boss and have to take a break coz my wrist hurt after playing this game 😂

18:20 no photo, no magic haha
I remember still seeing the Animal Crossing amiibo years later at local stores when I was buying Switch games. They looked so sad sitting there :(
I absolutely love hearing your stories working at Nintendo. This walk down memory amiibo lane was great.

Just went to GameStop and older amiibo is being restocked 😮 I got the Game & Watch amiibo 😊
Amiibos are awesome not only for games but collection also.👍😎
Today is also the 30 year anniversary of Donkey kong country!
And the 10 Year anniversary of Smash for Wii U, the game that kickstarted amiibo in the first place!
And the 20th anniversary of the DS!
And the 10th anniversary of Pokémon Alpha Sapphire & Pokémon Omega Ruby.
Another Awesome episode! Kit and Krysta-your podcast is such a joy!

Hearing Krysta talk about her home reminds me of an old friend from college 😂😂

Man I love this podcast. I remember watching some of your stuff back in the day on my 3DS, miss those days sometimes.
Thanks for sticking with us!
I’ve been down the rabbit hole ever since 2014! I love collecting amiibo!
20th Anniversary of Nintendo DS and 10th anniversary of Super Smash Brothers for Wii U
Yes! If you're in an anniversary mood we did a 20th anniversary episode on Nintendo DS earlier this month.
50:24 I’ve worked in a store in retail as the head of its inventory for 10 years. It’s incredibly annoying to have to hold onto product that you can’t clearance or send back. And gets in your way more than you’d think.

Lol they were obviously joking guys
@@BurnerAccount-yj6cj Do you honestly think they would do that?
“ everyone has their own Nintendo retirement fund “ Please expand 😊
I still love Amiibo but I want so much more from them in the games
When Krista talks about employment and promotions at Nintendo. I got flashbacks of my time at State Farm claims.
I remember getting my first amiibo back in 2015. Now I have 139 of them lol. I enjoy taking pictures of them and posting them on Instagram 😄
One thing that worries me about amiibo is if they discontinue the figures, the special content in many games will be inaccessible forever.
18:22 No photo inserted here. :-(
Mario Maker amiibo integration was amazing!!!! playing a Mario level with Pikachu, Olimar, Kirby!!!!
This is my favorite channel
Thank you!
"LINK IS HOT 🥵" - Reggie on morning news

THE SQUISHY METROID!
That’s my favorite too, for the EXACT same reason. XD That was for a long time my only Metroid amiibo because of the squishiness.
Wolf link was a great example of amiibo integration!
I have to agree that Disney Infinity definitely lacked substance, but Skylanders on the other hand especially Giants was an incredibly fun game that I would even consider a hidden gem on the Wii
I remember going to the midnight launches for the Amiibo. Great memories
My kids always called them amobii's. One misspoke & said it that way, everyone laughed, & then it stuck.
Quick correction, the rules didn't get adjusted for DLC at The Game Awards. It's always been the same since it started, just never reported on
I've always had weird feeling about Amiibos... I wonder if the e-Reader will be mentioned in this episode. It feels like it was the first step of the functionality we know today in amiibo
I have like 160 Amiibo. I never used them in games, but man are they fun to collect! I wish I had more to be honest. I know I’m missing 100 or more Amiibo.
15:23 trust me kit you’re not the only one waiting for a skylanders revival
❤ bluesky

If you had to sell your collection, which Amiibo would you keep ?
18:18 where's the photo 😭

Still so much potential with amiiboo.....

I remember the animal crossing amiibos having their prices slashed at my local walmart. They were going for $5 dollars.
So I've gone fully in with digital media for some years now and I maintain that it's, not only, more convenient, but also, guarantees preservation more.

16 hours is INCREDIBLY too long to play ANY game before you start to enjoy a video game. Life is too short 😢
You'll never ever get me on a promotion climbing office job... Just grim in every way.
I feel that DLC should be its own category and not be eligible for anything else.
I worked retail for pretty much all of Toys to Life, and it was crazy how bad Animal Crossing bombed Amiibo. I always wondered if it it did well in Japan or if it was a total flop.
20th anniversary of the Nintendo DS folks!
Nintendo could make a ton of money with amiibo if they just did for collector's éditions
I have a Smash Pikachu amiibo I hope will work with the upcoming 'Pokémon Z-A'... Don't hate, the Pokemon Rumble games were *awesome*.
Which retro game store in San Jose?? I live there and I'd love to check it out!
Game Shop Downstairs. Definitely check it out!!
I remember when Amiibo first launched and thought it was Nintendo trying to create their own Disney Infinity inspired game but with Nintendo characters 😂
God, I wish that was real…
@ Honestly, it would be such an awesome game 😭
I love amiibos to
Was planned scarcity ever a part of the Smash Bros amiibo rollout?
lets go!
Whatever happened to Bill Trinen? We used to see him often on videos a while back.
Still at NOA and now a very high-level executive!
Issue with AC Amiibo Festival was the game. Not the amiibo itself. The game felt rushed and unfinished 😢
I always thought the name was playing off the word amoeba.
The story is not "really good" in Dragon Quest III, I regret to say. It's very much a gameplay-first RPG.😅 DQIV and V would be the ones to really start pursuing story. But it's still excellent and one of the oldest RPGs still worth playing!
Switch having issues running dragon quest 3 is sad
Pulling for Astro Bot for GOTY (my personal pick). Very happy Black Myth Wukong was nominated in that category despite I know it will never win given all the weird discourse it experienced. I bet it's behind their Patreon paywall stuff now.... 😅😅😅😅
I wanna join the Patreon r u guys going do a black firday sale?
It’s pronounced “Balatro”
I'd be very interested to hear Krysta's perspective on being a woman at Nintendo. It sounds like a pretty strong patriarchal culture, that would make it harder to "succeed" if you are not a dude. I wonder how you perceived it back then, and how you see it now, in retrospect.
She wasn't the only woman at Nintendo bub. Soyo Oka worked there as well as tons of female composers.
Aren't the vast majority of office jobs like that?(and a lot of jobs in general?) It's not just Nintendo. But she lightly touched on it on another episode of the podcast. IIRC she said they were trying to market a product towards women and a lot of executives kept saying vaguely sexist things, and she alluded to the fact that she wasn't listened to as much as the men in the room were. It may have been an animal crossing game that they were trying to market, I don't remember the specifics.
Like this comment if you had to do easy mode for one or more of the Bowser’s minions battles for Mario & Luigi Brothership.
Amiibo have such wasted potential
How?
@ it was a cool collectable but never really offered much . Zelda is where I got the most use out of them. Nintendo could have created a video game specifically for amiibo like skylanders or something.
@Octoberisms Great idea!
