Ezeoke's analogy is incongruent. The Americans were extraordinarily liberal and generous to the Japanese after the war. The Americans also financed a massive reconstruction of Japan after the war. A better analogy would have been the American Civil War. The rebel Confederate states that lost the American Civil War, were not vilified and marginalized by the victorious federal states. The Nigerian state is filled with fear and hatred for Ndigbo, our Igbo politicians are not helping matters with their subservient attitude at the center!

Maazi Ezeoke I respect you and Mr. Obi but both of you have your opinions and so do I. First, you cited the wrong histories and two different countries-- Japan and Israel--horrific killings as was the Igbo massacre. You have to remember that the United States helped to rebuild Japan after the bombing. I did a term paper on that as a university student in the USA. After the Second World War, the Jews got to their homeland and swore never to let "genocide" happen to their people again. American Civil War was a stronger war to use--the same country. After the South lost the war, the North saw that the South was rebuilt and was absorbed into government and the economy. If the Igbos are going to be with Biafra or Nigeria, we have to ditch any idea of appeasement in that neighborhood. The same people that killed millions of your people and destroyed your economy--for no reason that I know of--are looking to do it again if you continue to display: "We have to all get along" mindset. @@tmstms2769

I think People are missing the point here.
Peter obi has the right to even congratulate Hitler if he wants to do so but the point is the choice of words that Peter obi used to celebrate gowon that he fought for the unity of Nigeria and he was a hero.
Gowon and his accomplices never fought for the unity of Nigeria rather for their selfish interests and their colonial masters.
Also, the most annoying part is that what happened before the genocide war is still happening now and which Peter obi knows about it.
Of course, Igbos understand that it is good to forgive and that is why Igbos are able to jump back after all the destruction.
It’s quiet unfortunate for Peter obi.

Forgiveness comes with palpable remorse/apology. General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) has never shown any remorse for his wrong doings during against the Igbos the Nigerian Civil War. Instead he goes around arrogantly in the name of "Nigeria Praise". A royal brutt who authorized the starvation to death millions of Igbo children and Asaba massacre. He will be forgiven if he humbles himself and do the most honorable thing.
For Peter Obi, he did exactly what any open minded politician should do in such a situation, in line with Ibrahim Waziri's (GNPP) principle of "Politics without Bitterness ".

Peter Obi’s birthday message to Gowon is good.
The problem in the message is in the second paragraph where he exonerated Gowon of any wrongdoing against Biafrans in the war.
“In a time of hate, you stood for love. At a time of strife, you stood for peace. At a time of division, you stood for unity.”
Gowon insulted Africa by going against the very peace treaty he signed with Ojukwu in the presence of all African leaders.

Mr. gowon expelled Christian missionaries from Nigeria in 1970 accusing them of helping Biafra. Members of one Catholic order from Ireland were publicly flogged before expulsion. Maybe if such people were around today, they would have helped to save Benue-Plateau people from annihilation by rampaging Fulani hordes or at least brought their plight to the attention of the outside world.

To be honest, wasn't expecting anything less from njenje. I don't even know how ppl are bringing up forgiveness, how do we even go about forgiving that or do you guys meant moving on, because Igbos have moved on since. No one was waiting for Nigeria and Gowon. Nigeria never shown remorse, still in denial, Gowon never shown remorse, still in denial, look at the hand writing on the wall. It's about to repeat itself and some ppl with their Christian bullshit want to make igbos to let their guards down because of their desperation to have a shut at the presidency.

Blaming Gowon for all that happens during the civil war is missing the point. Yes Gowon played a role in the whole issue but he was being directed from No. 10 Downing Street in London. He was just a British stooge. The British knew fully well that if the Igbos survived with all the oil wealth in the area, it will pose a problem for them.

Gowon being a stooge does not absolve him of blame. He was complicit in the entire saga. He had free will.

Never. Do not talk about forgiveness when it comes to Gowon. God; history and the spirits of the dead ones will neve forgive him. To mumu Peter Obi, may what Gowon did in Igbo land be a permanent visitor in your family and your generations to come.

One problem with some of our acclaimed educated illiterates is that, they always compare Nigeria with others countries as if we're the same with Japanese and USA. I don't get it.

Gowon may have been a tricky schemer , who found himself favored in the eyes of the British establishment way back during his days as a cadet Sandhurst and used that leverage to maneuver himself into power at the top, but he was not firmly in charge.. He was always watching his back. Besides, at that relatively young age of 32 years and his level of education which didn’t equip him with management skills needed for the running of a complex country like Nigeria, he lacked the ability to, as it were, have a mind of his own. He depended heavily on the likes of Chief Awolowo, Okoyi Arikpo etc for direction. I still believe that if it had not been someone as moderate as him in power, and that if his position as a moderate leader had not been strengthened by the fact of Dr Azikiwe’s “defection “ to the Federal Side, the war could have been ended in the battlefield and no one would have been able to stop the likes of Muritala from re-enacting the Asaba massacre all over the entire Igbo land. The only problem is that he has not been courageous to let everyone know the constraints he had during his time in power. The way his government had brought up the idea of massive federal government scholarship and loans to university students and allowed it to be benefited by students all over the country, without discrimination, spoke of his magnanimity and kind hearted nature. It’s important that he should apologize and acknowledge his mistakes or shortcomings in order to get forgiveness from God and humanity before he meets his maker. That will be a mark of greatness and something he should not allow himself to miss.

I am Igbo! But let me ask; Did Gowon cry out to you that he needs your forgiveness? Does Gowon acknowledge that he did anything wrong? If since the 1967 or so, he has not seen a need for forgiveness, what makes you think he would'nt despise any forgiveness imposed on him? Forgiveness of sin is non negotiable no matter the degree of offence, if you must retain a relationship with the Almighty God. For with God no degree of offence can justify any unforgiveness. But even if the Igbos choose to forgive him totally, but he does not repent of that atrocity, God Almighy himself will not forgive him.

There is nothing to forgive or not forgive by Igbos or whoever. Whatsoever a man sows, so shall he reap.
If Gowon even as a so-called Christian in the evening of his life, has refused to tell himself the truth , then Satan the father of lies is indeed proud of him and his eternal fate is sealed by his own hand.

What do you mean should Igbos forgive Gowon. The question should be why did Nigeria forgave the Igbos and the Igbos should be grateful to Gowon for making that declaration of no victor no vanquish after what the Igbos did by declaring biafraud and invading the old Midwest ( now Edo and delta states) ojukwu and his gang even rob our bank. The Igbos should be grateful to Gowon.
