94. This 65' STEEL EXPEDITION SHIP is ASTONISHING [Full Tour] Learning the Lines

  • We were truly taken aback by this 65 foot steel yacht. At an asking price of $225,000, it has the accommodations of 50' or bigger catamaran for a much more affordable price tag. Typically catamarans with similar accommodations are million dollar boats. We're constantly looking for boats that have a ton of bang for your buck and this one certainly fits the bill.
A few things to note: This boat has twin diesels, which great and is not typical for monohull sailboats. It also has a huge engine and equipment room which isn't typical. This boat is truly setup to take you anywhere on the globe in comfort, including high latitudes, with it's heavy-duty steel construction and protected helms.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

This is definitely my favorite boat. As a mechanic, the motor room and small shop would make me feel so comfortable on long passages. I’d have my small welder, the generator is big enough to power it and I’d be able to do hull repairs anywhere! That would be amazing. I’d buy this over a house lol

@@robertmcausland4916, when out for survey, a bow thruster (did not seen one installed) is almost mandatory on a vessel this size these days (even with a twin installation). Upgraded electronics and nav equipment is on the wish list as well (maybe not "need" but it is 2020 after all...).

Recently saw a boat like this come out of the water for new bottom paint. She was also, all steel about 27 years old and Bristol fashion. When they were power washing her, the power washer strayed a little high of the water line on the top sides, and sliced right through the hull! She was completely rotted out, but there was no way to check from the interior. Steel hull boats need constant attention and inspection, everything has to be removable so one can check for rust, which never sleeps. Insulation above the waterline, must be removable, as well as all panels. Rust loves to eat at the ribs. I would be scared to death of taking a steel vessel from FL, this old to the high latitudes without extreme levels of inspection and survey. New steel is awesome, old steel is scary. Nice tour kids.Fair winds.

I must say I really liked that boat it had lots of room and had a unique charm to it. amazing that it had all those pets on board and the kids being small they would have been really cozy. I look forward to more boat tours.

Awesome steel cutter for a family to explore the world! I love the redundant systems in it. The Twin diesel engines, the sails, Triumph dingy and Jet Ski, plus 700 gallons of water and a water maker are impressive. It is very livable with AC, roomy quarters, washer/dryer and plenty of storage. You're right, it needs a gimble and Solar. I just wish that you two focused a little bit more on the boat's instrumentation. Like this boat a lot!

I traded land in CR for a similar 58' Steel Ketch in 2014. It was built in 99' by an engineer in NZ an Askew design. It was in absolutely perfect condition, original cost US$ 1.5M. I took me over 2 years to sell @ US$ 195K. Good thing the land I traded was worth 40K. Anyway these are the problems that make a boat like this hard to sell:
    1. It would be sloooow!!! 6knt max in a gale. That is likely a 35-40 ton vessel.
    2. One Off builds are hard to sell, period
    3. Rust, my vessel had not one spec of rust and access for inspection the entire inside. This vessel didn't have near the care mine did and I don't see how you could inspect the hull from the inside which is critical.
    4. This vessel will need again what you pay for it on day one. Upkeep, slip, insurance etc easily US$ 35K per year.
If you are in no hurry to get there and good with a torch it might work but for no more than US$ 100K forever. The 100K you need to drop in it will never come back nor the 35K per year. Main deal is this will be a dog to sail but you can tie up to an ice burg.

First time here, TH-cam algorithm must know I like steel hulls. Great job, especially like the idea of doing the one shot end to end, don't often see that in reviews and sometimes jump cuts can be confusing / disorientating. Great vessel has lots gong for it, needs a real captain / crew though. In time I would suggest trying to get a lens or camera with wider angle lens. Thanks for this.

Hey guys... the wife and I have been long time viewers and also commented on a few vids. We're currently in the process of selling up to find, buy and circumnavigate so we are enjoying these vids. Can we suggest that a few things...
    1) at the moment we watch via the TH-cam app on the TV so when you don't put the price on the vid itself it means we have to then go to the PC to find it which then cocks up your analytics because it shows we have started then not finished watching. You did put it in the vid when you started boat tours.
    2) when doing the tours and whoever is presenting and identifying items like where the instruments are etc., instead of panning the camera to the items referenced you stay focused on the presenter... move the camera, the presenter doesn't always have to be in the shot.
    3) could you do some more affordable beer budget blue cruiser tours because the latest boats, whilst awesome to see, have been pocket killers.
Thanks again guys and we are looking forward to you two actually getting out and doing some sailing rather than projects the whole time... you need to go and enjoy the fruits and not just go onto another project haha... take care!

I had been thinking of going with a Catamaran for my next boat, but looking at this boat I think I might have to email and find out more about it....

Definitely cheaper than an equivalent cat!

@@LearningtheLines With her being steel hull wonder when the last time the hull was audio gauged for thickness loss? With steel at this age of boat you could have 20 layers of bottom paint and just a few mil's of steel left!! Not good, and could end up being a very expensive fix. I do love that engine room and basement!! You said it holds 700 gallons of water any idea how much fuel it holds?

@Crazyirish _ I know what a survery is for! Most steel boat owners NEVER have a audio gauge done on their hulls. I have seen some hulls that are just rust and bondo, and the owners wondered why their boat sank at the dock. Watch out for that stray AC electrical current in the water at marinas, will eat up a steel boat in no time.

I just got a email from the owner, she holds 400 gallons of fuel! He sent me the last survey and the hual soudings. She is in good condition from the survey. I might have to rethink the catamaran for this yacht.. I really like this sailboat, yes she needs some rigging refit and TLC. But steel hull is great to have and twin mains, wow!!

It's a lot of boat for the money; steel hull, two 90hp Engines, wonderful engine and electronics Room, two helms (inside, outside covered), a caddy dingy w/great storage system, watermaker, radar, a Master bedroom w/access to both sides of the bed, enclosed showers and a bath, two anchors, a great galley, Jet ski?, tons of storage, almost a match for a Catamaran, a 65 foot boat a very nice practical sailboat, nice looking, and much, much more, that may bought for $200,000.

Interesting looks very much like an Australian build. I have a 44 foot steel and i love living in it I wish i had a workshop like that I miss that extra space. A beautiful build i think and for 225k a great buy the navigation will need replacing by the looks non the less a beautiful boat. Personally I would like an expedition yacht but beggars can't be choosers. Keep up the good work

Yeah, they mentioned briefly it was built in Oz, then went to a few other owners around the world.

Colin Jones if the nav electronics are still working why would it need replacement. Get an iPad with GPS and you have a backup system. I simply don’t understand why everyone thinks you need the latest version of technology to be able to go cruising.

That's an awesome expedition boat. Just oozes visions of exploring remote destinations. Boat is priced great. Though The running cost and cost of upgrades / maintenance to make it more independent (solar, wind gen, upgrade battery banks, electronics etc ) give me anxiety. If I win the lottery will be giving them a call for sure haha.

    • @LearningtheLines
      @LearningtheLines  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It really doesn't need new electronics or wind generation. Solar is pretty cheap. I'd probably add some panels and go cruise.

@@LearningtheLines I was thinking more for making it truly off the grid remote expedition style cruising. Possibly do some remote research projects. Yeah can't really tell the electronics from the video but I'm sure there always money to spend there haha
