Fun Fact: "Louie Louie" was investigated by the FBI for possible obscenity in the lyrics. The allegation's were false. The nearly unintelligible lyrics were misinterpreted, and the song was banned from radio stations. "Louie Louie" is considered one of the most influential songs in Rock History.
yeah we had a rock band when we were in jr high in 1966 and played this song and pretty much improvised on the lyrics every time we played at our school dances. we did NOT know what the real lyrics were!
I had forgotten about this song! I had attributed not understanding what he was saying to being from the U.K! It doesn't sound like they have an accent when they are singing but that's the reason many UK bands are hard to understand! After I watched this reaction I did a Google search of this band and found out they 're not from the UK but Portland Oregon! Much to my surprise!
Well, it would seem enough people cared that it is still part of the historical mystique of the song today. But ya it was a an amazing jam first and foremost 🤟❤️🇨🇦

Thanks JV for this song. You may recall this song was #3 on my OHW Top 50 list. What sets this song apart is exactly what you've discovered. The lyrics are indecipherable. And The Kingsman never published the lyrics. In fact it's speculated they were high and didn't even know what he was singing. Even today they are still debating the words. The words you showed on the internet are still just speculation. Hence this is one of the most famous songs ever. Great reaction JV! I'm cracking up with a huge smile on on my face.
No debate. Written and sung by Richard Berry. A Jamaican song, pretty much word for word. It’s funny because if you don’t know what he’s saying it sounds obscene. It was investigated and banned for dirty lyrics when there isn’t a dirty word in it. 😀
The definitive version of a garage rock classic. Because the words were almost unintelligible, J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI launched an obscenity investigation. Check out the Beach Boys' cover of the song from their first album (Surfin' Safari) for one of the few versions in which one can understand the words.
U just chug a beer & sing the "Louie, LOUIE!" part real loud! 😂B/c of the film "Animal House" soundtrack as soon as I was a college Freshman, this was blasted at every party! 🍻
This is an all time classic of garage rock. Who cares if the lyrics are unintelligible? Other garage rock greats are The Seeds "Pushing Too Hard", The Count Five "Psychotic Reaction", Question Mark and the Mysterions "96 Tears", The Electric Prunes "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night", Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs "Woolly Bully" and The Sir Douglas Quintet "She's About a Mover".
“Animal House” came out in August 1978. A month before I started college. You’ve no doubt seen it. This was the Toga Party song. So, suffice it to say, I went to many a Toga Party. We made our outfits from white bed sheets. They weren’t easy to find. Lots of alcohol consumed and that 8am English class was hard to make. Many times not made! Oh man. What a crazy time. But such great memories of complete craziness. 😂
Louie Louie is the "unofficial" state song of Washington State. We had an Thurston county commissioner(?) that sang this song. It has been a massive hit here for decades. He was good too!
We used to dance to this song at the high school dances. Nobody could decipher the lyrics and we didn't have the internet to help us. Like Jayvee says, the song had a great beat and everybody loved it. Even a bad dancer like myself gave it a whirl on the dance floor.
Jay, thank you; I am 66 years old, was just a kid when this song came out!! Everyone made up their own interpretation!! But now I finally know what the heck they were singing about!!!!✌️💕
OMG! NOBODY knew what they were saying, but it was a MONSTER hit. I wore my 45 out and danced so hard. Those first 4 keyboard notes had everybody jumping up to dance. What fun we had to this song!! Rock and roll history right there.
OO Yah... the words were intentionally sung in a vague mumble---that turned out to be part of this records' "HOOK". A famous OLDIE from the very early pre-Beatles 60's. : )
Great reaction Jay .I use to hear my mum play this never got a word myself so I do understand what you are saying. That must be the reason they only did one song. 😂😂
When I was a kid I had a money box shaped like a jukebox that played this... loved it. Though I never identified that the lyrics were Louie Louie 😂 Also what is Howard Wolowitz doing on the drums? Just me who sees a resemblance?!
I got to perform Louie Louie with the Kingsmen about 20 years ago... I won a karaoke contest and singing with them was a part of the prize package 😃 🎶🎶
"Back in the day" part of the charm of the song was the we could not understand it, we made up our own lyrics ... we could make it "bad" if we wanted. Years later I found the lyrics but no matter how many times I read them, I always forgot them and sang my own gibberish! Who cared ... it was so much fun to dance to!!
This song was/is one of the most covered in rock history, with over 1,500 versions recorded. A definite staple in any garage rock/punk bands repertoire. The Kingsmen's version, which is a cover of a 50's song by Richard Berry, is probably the most well known.

He's a sailor in a bar somewhere in the south seas, pining for a girl he left behind in the last port. Louie is the bartender. He's telling Louie about this girl, speaking in pidgin english. Most people think it's "we gotta go", but no, it's "*me* gotta go*. He wants to get back to his girl. .

The Kingsmen, the Sonics, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Them, the Zombies, the Kinks and the Animals. These were the bands with which I grew up. They were the first and original punk bands. They grooved around in turtle necks and sang about girls, cars and cigarettes. So good.
A few years ago this song struck my curiosity so I did a little investigation. This is originally a Caribbean song written by Richard Berry in 1955 (and based on an older Afro Cuban song named, 'El Loco Cha Cha'). The song echoes Jamaican speech patterns and references Jamaica. The song is still considered the unofficial “other” state song. What an opportunity we missed out here in the PNW! Cheers!
I was maybe in 5th grade when this was a hit. I remember being forced to attend Catholic mass every morning, and I would swear that the old priest saying mass in Latin was mumbling these lyrics. It made the whole thing easier to take.
The Kingsmen, the only group to have an android on keyboards, and Howard Wolowitz, channelling Ringo and Keith Moon, on drums! Love the guitarist's cheeky little kick step too, they were having fun! Even if no-one else knew what they were on about! 😉
That's how I remember it too!
LOL That is great

I just danced my little heart to this song. Didn't know English at the time anyway... lol
were you from canada or france ?!
Jayvee says "The 60s version of mumble rap." Thats the best analysis of this song EVER!
Except for those of us who have never heard of 'mumble rap' ... !
"Mumble Rap." That's great!
I couldn't understand back then either, never cared for the song.
Classic

Every garage rock band had this arrow in the quiver. A small club + a fun crowd + a dance floor + Louie, Louie = good times!

The Lyrics of Louie, Louie
**************************
Oh, no, you take me where ya gotta go
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby
Louie, Louie
Oh, baby, take me where ya gotta go
A fine little girl, she waits for me
Me catch the ship across the sea
Me sailed that ship all alone

Oh, no, me gotta go

Louie, Louie
Oh, baby, me gotta go
Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now
Me see
Me see Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long me see me love
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I'll never leave (you )again
Oh, Louie, Louie
Oh, no, me gotta go
