As usual, Jessie. Very good. Not bragging, but I knew that had to be a Mormon settlement in the first 30 seconds. As it happens, and as you mentioned, they thought they were still in Arizona/Utah territory. Too many women:men ratio obvious in the images. Brother Brigham Young sent them south to populate southern parts of the territory - they made an erroneous right turn. They were certainly a formidable pioneering people.

I often think about things like that. People traveling across the desert back in the day, late 1800s early 1900s. You really had to know your route, one wrong turn out in the desert and who knows how long you might have to go without water. tough hardened individuals they were, well anyone growing up in the southwest back in those times

One thing is puzzling, if these structures were all 10s of feet underwater, when did these explanatory placards pop-up? Must have done it pretty recently I guess. No?

My guess is sometime after 2002 ......2002 is the last time the town resurfaced

The town was officially flooded and the last resident used a wooden door as a boat and paddled away from his home in 1938. Since it first completely flooded the town, the water levels in lake mead have dropped and exposed the town a couple of times (mid 1940’s, mid 1960’s and 2012 to name a few).
When I visited the town in 2015 with my pup and my friend, the nearest water to the town was hundreds of yards away and it was pretty clear that it would take a miracle or horrific flood to cover the town again. Back when I visited “the sunken city of St. Thomas”, there was only one placard with a few old photos and info at the parking area, which is about a half mile away from the town, but I didn’t see any other placards anywhere in or around the town.
It’s pretty interesting to see for yourself and the state park it’s located inside of ( Valley of Fire state park) allows hikers to bring dogs as long as they’re leashed and has tons of other interesting and amazing places to check out. Just avoid summer time and check weather reports first because there is ZERO shade at the trailhead parking area, the hike down and back, and in/around the town itself. Definitely bring water with you and snag a free map when you enter the park or from a ranger to make sure you take the right roads/trails
