Fascinating. I do think it's time to revisit this with better cameras and camera housing.

It would be so cool to see it from modern, 360 camera perspective!

I came here from Tom Scott's newsletter. I really hope you can revisit this with current tech.

Time to drop the GoPro down the hole again.

Imagine getting a national park grant to drop a steel-encased 4k gopro down old faithful. Imagine the camera getting caught in an eruption, with contact microphones catching sounds.

A modern high ISO digital camera would be able to show a lot more. I'd love to see footage from something like that. Though this was great.

I know this is pedantic as heck, but I have to point out that a high ISO digital camera isn't particularly useful if you have full control of the lighting. I'd suggest that modern high-power LEDs would be the way to go; increasing light gives you the same effect as increasing ISO (but without the increase in image noise). But yes, it would be very cool to see this done with modern hardware.

    This gave me Subnautica flashbacks.
More seriously, though, incredible video. Gave me the feeling I was inside somewhere I wasn't supposed to be.

This is so cool to see! I'm headed to YNP and Old Faithful on a trip in a month or so and am learning as much as I can before I go. didn't expect to find this!

Just came to say... I sure wish there was a better video of this now that technology has advanced logarithmically. I mean, I have students that I show this video to at least twice per year (each semester). :) I just went searching and it's still the same video. I'd love to see a better view of the walls!!!

This gave me an anxiety that I can't explain! Very cool though!

Who’s the narrator? Mr. Haney from “Green Acres”?
NO ONE is gonna get that reference.

Is there a role for ground-penetrating radar?

FYI: Old Faithful is not connected to any of the many other geysers in upper geyser basin, but is connected to the manmade drilled Soda Springs in Idaho....
That will always be one of the craziest things to me... the connection between Old Faithful and Soda Springs... Wild

I like to hope... and pray... that the pressure relieved here in some way relieves the pressure building below the volcano ready to erupt 😬
