    On my website, there is lots of info on brushes, rollers, scrapers and more content added each week. Also, I think you will find the short video tutorials (more coming) packed with tricks of the trade that I can guarantee will help you become a much better diy home painter.
    I show you how I treat a water stain so you can paint over it with out it bleeding through your new coat of paint.
    Knowing what to use is the trick here. There are many different brands and they will all do the same thing. Just make sure it's 'shellac' based or cleans up with metholated spirits or rubbing alcohol. Easy peasy!

    Im in my first house and am new to DIY and painting and as you said people would have, I've been painting over the water mark with new layers everyday with no success. Today I have got some of the spray and the stain has instantly been painted over! Thank you very much for taking the time to share your knowledge with newbies like me!

    After my Transportable Home, was recently damaged by smoke, I wasn't too sure if I could fix it all by myself. After watching this, I have decided to give it a go. Excellent Video... Thank you very much for your sharing. I do the same as you had said. The water stain on my bathroom ceiling disappeared. You’re my great helper. Appreciate sharing of your experiences on TH-cam. Follow up: Actually I had sprayed that Zinsser BIN for 4 to 5 layers over prior to water based flat white ceiling paint. More than 2 layers there!

    if you have a water stain coming through say on a wall , ceiling wipe down .let the stain dry out then paint over with oil based undercoat ( thin it a bit with some meths , then apply over the stain area ( ensure you paint bigger area than Stain , let that dry ….then use the water based original emulsion over .
    Simples or you can buy the expensive stain blocker

    When you use the stain blocker does that seal it to prevent any mold issues or anything? I've heard water stains can cause mold if not replaced. enjoy the videos and def saved me a lot of money if I can do this instead of replace the sheet rock. Thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin Blanchard It depends on just how bad the water damage is. Over the years I've used the stain blocker on some pretty bad water damage with great results. Meaning, it has to be pretty bad to make the decision to replace the gyprock. I've even had to float topping compound over it sometimes!

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Invincible Painting Basics LOL, Rereading your comment Justin and I realized I didn't even answer your question! As for the mold, I'm not a mold expert but I cant see mold growing there after the treatment unless it's an area in your house that is suitable for mold growth (new mold as apposed to the mold underneath your treatment) meaning mold from spores floating around rather than it 'coming' through the new paint.

    Hi, I urgently need your help, as I am sure a lot of DIY's do. We just came across your video. We had a water damage spot repaired "by a professional" in a new home we purchased. Then we went around ourselves, after the repairs were done, to save money, and applied the recommended Bullseye 123. Then, we hired and paid a professional painting company to "paint our home." To our surprise the two water stains on the ceiling "bleed through." After listening to your video to our amazement the "professional sheet rock repair guy' NEVER MENTIONED ONCE to use a "stain blocker" to block the stain and keep it from bleeding. Why did he not use it? I do not know. Well, at this point that is neither here nor there, we just need to know how to resolve the problem. Can we just spray the "recommended stain blocker" we saw you use in this video over the area we had painted less than 24 hours ago, or do we have to have the entire area paint removed, repaired again, and then spray with stain blocker? HELP HELP HELP.

    • @RickBushell1958

    Re ceilings that are heavily discolored from cigarette smoke - Should I lightly pole sand the ceiling PRIOR to applying the oil based stain blocker or does it matter??

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sarah G I'm always saying "If you're going to paint it, sand it!" This is one case where I usually never sanded before painting. Sounds like you already know you have to treat the ceiling (surface) because of the cigarette smoke. This smoke will bleed through and make the finish coat look awful. It HAS to be treated, but don't use 'OIL BASE' stain blocker. You want to use a shellac based (Zinsser-123 or similar) sealer. Read the instructions on the back label and look for 'Clean up". If you need rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits to clean up your brushes, you know you have the right stuff. Good luck

      Thank you! No sanding will really cut down on the mess. I'm taking a break from washing the nicotine covered walls and was quite pleased to find your speedy response. {For the walls I'm using TSP (Sugar Soap) + hot water and rinsing with clean fresh water.} I was actually planning on using Zinsser-123 but wrongly called it "oil based" since it can't be cleaned up with water. It probably doesn't matter, can't hurt. Hard to tell without looking at it. Unless it's really rough and looks like it needs a sand, then sand it, otherwise straight over the top with your sealer. Good luck, it's smell stuff, open some windows and get some fresh air coming in.

    Thank you! Now...are there any limitations to types of paint you can paint over B.I.N.? For that matter do you have any videos that demystify which paints can and cannot be used over other types of paints?

      +Chuckles I explain a bit on water base and oil base paints here: th-cam.com/video/oHT5wvDEiD4/w-d-xo.html
      Just remember, whether you are using water or oil, you cannot paint one over the other without sanding and undercoating. First, after watching the video I mentioned above, sand your surface and apply 1 coat of oil base 'All purpose (or General purpose) undercoat. Then apply what ever it is you are using. In regards to painting over BIN, I haven't had any problems painting anything right over the top of it.

    came across this very helpful video while researching how to paint over silicone filler? Had a new front door installed and when I went to paint surrounding walls there is some clear silicone, about an inch wide, that ruins the overall look. would the type of product mentioned in this video also work as a "cover" on this silicone allowing me to paint over it? many thanks

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michael Collins I honestly don't know. You could try it but I doubt it will work. Painting over silicon produces a reaction with the paint. Trying to remove the silicon is difficult at the best of times. I have removed it from wood surfaces (with an enourmous amount of effort) but sometimes I still get the reaction, even though it appears it has all been removed. Man could I tell you stories about painting newly installed guttering that needed to be painted! Not sure what your walls are made of but I sometimes have gotten away with rubbing latex caulking over the silicon and that will stop the reaction from the silicon as the caulking is too thick to react. What ever you do, keep me posted as I would like to know how you get out of this one! Good luck mate. ;)

      +Invincible Painting Basics thanks for the reply, I'll certainly keep you informed if I find a way. To be honest I'm seriously thinking of calling the installers back and asking them to take out the clear silicone and re do with some filler that can easily be painted

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do make a paintable silicon. Silicon is great for many things but around the paint trade, it's a big pain.

    I am so confused between all of the Zinsser products and videos. You seem to be the only one that says not to use water based. I need to kill mold and mildew first. Have scraped a bathroom popcorn ceiling, cleaned it well and am ready to put Zinsser Mold Killer water base on the ceiling. Then we are going to cover with sheetrock mud, sand, and put another coat of the Mold Killer primer on it before we put final coats of eggshell finish final paint. Is this not a good idea???? I am thinking what you use will just hide the mold...which is really no longer visible as it was on the popcorn that was scraped off????

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Killing the mold is as simple as using bleach. Dilute some in water and voila. You will still see some but it's not alive. The stain it leaves is the reason you use the type of product I mention in the video. It stops the stain from bleeding through. Simple as that. If the stain isn't too bad, yes, your water base material might work. Might. Why take the chance of it not working? Do it right from the start. I've used just about every product you can come up with. I stick with what works. Also, I'm not sure why you're going through the process of skim coating your cieling? Unless of course it's a mess from all the scraping you've done.
      Here's how I would do this. 1. wash area with the bleach mix. 2. Treat the stains with the 123 zinsser. 3. Skim coat your ceiling. And 4, Paint 2 coats (maybe three) to finish. Good luck mate

    • @imready8558
      @imready8558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      will we be able to sand the 123??? Yes, skimming it due to the scraping

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to sand the 123 at all.If you feel you must, make it a very light sand with fine sandpaper. Have fun :)

    • @imready8558
      @imready8558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      :) yes, will need to sand, hopefully lightly, after the skim...which will be in spots, again hopefully, over the 123...Thanks for responding so quickly....have been researching u-tube for a solid week!

    • @imready8558
      @imready8558 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      we have already "killed" the mold with a highly recommended mold/mildew killer. We have tried bleach on another area for it to only keep coming back. However, the "source" of that problem is condensation which has not been fixed, so we still have the wonderful environment for the problem there. It never ends!

    Hello great video.
    I used an oil based spray to cover up some water stains on my ceiling. 24 hours later i could tell where i sprayed but the stains seemed to be gone. After that, i primed the entire ceiling with a stain blocking water based primer (both spray and primer were KILZ products). I checked on it 24 hours after i applied the primer and the stains had come back. the paint I was going to use next is water based also. should I go over the water spots again with the spray and then apply paint? or what should i for this situation? thanks for the help!

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joseph Mica The problem is the water base products. There good products, just misused. You can get away with using oil based products but only if use both oil base undercoat/sealer and also finish with an oil base finish, eg enamel. Most today wont come anywhere near oil base products so you have to use a shellac based (cleanup with rubbing alcohol/methylated spirits) product. This is a must if you are going to finish with a water base paint. Unfortunately for you, your KILZ 'water base' stain blocker doesn't work all too well with water stains. Go over your stains with a sealer that HAS to be cleaned up using rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits. Read the back of the can under 'clean up', it will state what is needed for cleaning up. And then you can go over the area with your water base paint with no problems. Hope this helps

    • @josephmica9674
      @josephmica9674 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Invincible Painting Basics do you think if I go over the stain again with the KILZ oil based spray and then use oil based ceiling paint over the water based primer it would fix my problem?

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joseph Mica Get yourself a can of Zinsser B I N . Use this to paint over your stains. Then paint your ceiling with any water base paint you are using, If you decide to go with the oil base paint as your finish coat, you don't need to use your oil spray but I would recommend to coat your ceiling first with oil base undercoat. This is providing a key for your finish (enamel) coat. Also, it's a good practice to never paint over any water base material with oil base enamel without first applying a coat of oil base undercoat. Personally, I would use the Zinsser. Much easier and when you need to recoat your ceiling at some point in time, it's just another coat of water base material. www.zinsseruk.com/product/b-i-n/ good luck mate

    Water staining means you have an issue that you should correct as soon as possible. Painting over it will only hide the problem which will cost you a ton more later.

    I have walls that have severe nicotine stains on them.. I used tsp and no matter how many times I go over the walls.. my water turns that gross brown color. Am I going to have to prime all my walls with the B.IN. ? Even with two coats? If so, what prep work can I do so that I can only have to put one coat of B.I.N on the walls ? B.I.N is super expensive! they also say I need a respirator to work with it as it has a very powerful smell. Also they say you can't use T.S.P on the walls if your planing on using B .I.N . is that actually true? I didn't know that and I washed my walls with the T.SP. already. I hope I'm not screwed because it seems with the research that B I N is that best thing to use for this.. Thank you

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, don't panick, not all is lost. Go over your walls with just plain water. Let completley dry. This is just to remove any residue the tsp may have left. And 1 coat of BIN primer is enough. I've had to coat entire exteriors due to nicotine. There is no other way around this, it has to be BIN or any other stain killer that cleans up with rubbing alcohol/mineral spirits. And yes it really is smelly. Along with your resperator, open all doors and window for fresh air. fyi-Be a little cautious of the info from behind the counter painters.

      Thank you for getting back on that for me. Well yesterday I started painting with your techique, I have to say it is taking me abit to retrain. Old habbits die hard I guess. (Dipping the brush in and giving it a shake or tap on the side of the can). Your right it does fill the brush better, less dipping. I also for the very first time cleaned my brush off after my day was done with a wire brush! What a difference! I did not get all the paint off so I left it overnight to soften. I will try the brush again and make it a new suit to cover it after I clean it again later today. (Any other tricks for dried out paint brushes?) I tried not to get the handle in water as I was afraid it may swell it. Well I am totally impressed with cleaning it with the wire brush, I wish I knew this trick years ago, I would have saved alot of money! Thank you so much for all your wonderful help and advise!-audie

    just go over the stain with some oil based undercoat - if you are painting a room you've probably got some - let it dry and then go over the ceiling with your emulsion.. simple..

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post roblex63, but that solution doesn't work. It looks fine after the undercoat is dry but bleeds straight thru after applying the water base finish coat. Using BIN guarantees one success. Also you wont have to wait hrs and hrs for it to dry as you would with the undercoat. 15/30 minutes max and you can apply your paint. Faster and easier and no crossing your fingers hoping the stain won't bleed thru.

    Hi mate, I just painted my ceiling and have lighter shades on fresh new plaster patches where I had chimney removed. would old and new plaster make a difference to the shades.

    • @RickBushell1958
      @RickBushell1958  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jasvir, no, it shouldn't have different shades. Not seeing it makes it a bit difficult to diagnose the problem. But it could be the new plaster wasn't completely dry, or maybe you need another coat of paint, (not quite covering maybe)or it could be because the paint is a very cheap paint with very poor opacity. Good luck mate

      The patches had dried out for over a few months more than enough drying time. Am using crown ceiling paint from B&Q. I am beginning to think the old boards have been water stained.
