? He wasn't breaking. You can listen to the commentary. Basically at this point he's losing his mind and he kind of acting like everything he's saying is a take. So he say he's line then his mind just... empties to get ready for another take. It's an actor joke. Some actors will do it.

Still one of the funniest thing I've ever seen, all these years later. The audio commentary might be funnier than the movie, with Downey doing most of it as Lincoln, and they definitely get a huge laugh at this point. Downey just yells "Man, we were havin' a ball that day!!"
@DRIVER exactly! There are so many extras you miss, and movie buffs should always get the physical media. I would love for the Criterion Collection to do a release of Tropic Thunder with new extras.

I think downy jr. surprised himself with this line, I'm sure it was all ad-lib improv, and it almost turned into an outtake. my favorite part in the movie, I couldn't stop laughing in the theatre!!

Not the whole movie but the Kirk Lazarus scenes stand out for me... He is the gripping power behind the film and one of the all time funniest characters imo . He should have been in Big Lebowski or Pulp Fiction... And this scene is the best :)

"i don't read the script, the script reads me" and the lip twitching action!! aaahahahahah every time i watch this ahh this guy is a genius :) right up there in my favourite actors-you go rdj!!
i think they left this in the movie because it is an amazing feat of acting to have the emotional capacity to go from blowing your line almost to blooped corpsing to the go from 100 to 0 like it wasnt even accidental like his eyebrows and kinda also eyes didnt move and i thought they were laughing eyebrows and eye but he went to serious face and they stayed the same shape and im watching like holy fuck this is comedy like never ever again
I noticed this in the theater and it was my favorite part in the movie. In the commentary Ben Stiller specifically talked about this being his favorite moment. He called it "dead eyes" lol because of how he seems to zone out after the smile. I think he forgot what his character was supposed to be doing/feeling, lol. But the way his face moves is hilarious
@OrcSoldat He's trying to explain the plan in the story by asking them if they've read the book first and no one has. Then he says they must know script and no one knows it either. So he says "What you gettin' at with the book/script? Spit that shit out man!!"
I don't think I get this scene. Why is it so funny? Cause I'm thinking "What the hell did he just say?" Was this line improvised and didn't make any sense or am I just missing something?
That line was so epic that even RDJ couldn't hold a straight face.
Lmao.
I wonder how many takes they needed until they gave up

Honestly, that smile is such a good piece of character work, if even unintentional, because he’s starting to really crack by this point.

He said nothing of the sort in the commentary.
That smile makes this scene, accidental or not 😂
Thats probably, honestly, thats probably my favorite moment in any movie
That awkward pause when they are waiting for Stiller to say cut and he never does.
thankfully they didn't

This was the point of the movie I fell out of my chair laughing.. God bless Robert Downey Jr..

Flawless Victory! Hood pass GRANTED!
Love it. That smile I think is him being happy he nailed that tongue twister of a line lol and Stiller kept it in. Glad he did. Makes it even funnier
Downey trying not to laugh is the best thing ever

I’m so glad this is the same guy who gave his life to stop thanos
one of the best humour scenes EVER.
Now I think the question is: Was it Kirk Lazarus or Downey that broke character? lol
I found this to be one of the funniest scenes in the movies.. RD's face is hilarious!1 :D
LMAO... his face.. ive watched it like 10 times
Best part of the movie. The facial contorsions, the way he says it, man that shit is hilarious! Spit that shit out man!
RDJ clearly wasn’t supposed to make that face....but it was so funny they just had to leave it in
"i dont read the script, script reads me."

Man, he doesn't break character till he's done the DVD commentary...Now the REAL question is, which one said it...Kirk or Robert? HUH!?
There is no Kirk or Robert....I think he might be no one....

I love this scene
An Absolutely Epic Moment.... Gets all Angry then suddenly looks bewildered then starts Smiling.
Classic!
Marvel on FandomWire brought me here

I thought I was the only one! DAmn! Its the best part of the movie when he smiled and then back to a "confused" face again...
