Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan have one of the best real life friendships I’ve ever seen. When they were doing the Winter Soldier press tour Sebastian wasn’t being as lively in his interviews as he should’ve been. So the marketing team paired him with Anthony Mackie to as Sebastian said “put some life into him”, and it freaking worked.
Watch the interview Sebastian Stan did from when he won the Golden Globe where Anthony Mackie crashes the interview and they both start acting like kids who just won a championship together.

When Sam says "you and Steve would never understand" it's because they could never know the weight of a black man carrying that shield

It's going to interesting to see how Kristen's understanding of why Sam didn't just take the shield expands. People's life experiences certainly show through on how they interpret the world. When I first saw this series, I knew immediately why he didn't want to take the shield. Of course I already knew a lot about Sam Wilson in the comics so I wasn't coming in blind. Let's just say that his apprehension makes perfect sense. You can see it in the real world right now. And I'll stop there so that there are bo spoilers.
Kristen looks beautiful in this video btw. This is a winning look for her. 👍🏾

I really enjoy the development of the partnership between Sam and Bucky because they were each friends of Steve, but not with each other, so it is an interesting exploration of a dynamic altered by the absence of the key part keeping them together, and seeing if they could become friends without Steve.
The show did a good job of making John Walker sympathetic initially, but still ensure that we reject him as unworthy of that shield and mantle.
There is a decent exploration of the ideas behind icons, about both their power and how they can descend into superficiality. There is later talk about how Steve Rogers was the "blonde haired, blue eyed champion," thus reducing him to the Aryan ideal that Hitler was obsessed about; yet the most intriguing part is that I had to struggle to remember if Steve had blonde hair or blue eyes because I just knew him as a person, rather than dwell on appearances, which shows the strength of his character as his appearance didn't matter, but it did to others who are misguided and focused on superficial traits (like the people who chose John Walker based on superficial traits like appearance and being in the military).

He’s a soldier trying to do a job. He didn’t want it, but a soldier’s duty is to follow orders and that’s a lot of pressure. I blame the government not knowing any better. And I respect Walker and his resume. I can’t stand people hating on a soldier who went through a lot, earned medals of HONOR and is doing his duty all without any thanks coming his way.

It will never sit right with me how Bucky and Sam treats John right off the bat, even if they were angry about him being the new Captain America, no soldier treats a Medal of Honor recipient like that, every soldier knows that MoH recipients earned their medals through extraordinary sacrifice and bravery. So for Bucky and Sam to just shut John out, and for Bucky to actively mock the pressure John is under and even question his bravery to self sacrifice, is just deeply insulting.

To understand Sam's motivation on giving up the shield just think about it from his point of view. Steve and Bucky discuss giving Sam The shield without actually talking to him not considering if Sam wanted the responsibility or legacy of The shield. Also their decision on choosing Sam as the next Captain America was not raised motivated but it should have been considering neither of them thought about the world reaction to a black man representing America's interest.

I too, was so mad at the bank guy for not giving freaking FALCON, who helped fight Thanos, a loan. The sheer audacity. Like, if he was being greedy and using his hero status to wrongfully take advantage of people, that would be one thing, but all he wants is a reasonable loan, that he plans to pay back. I think helping to save half the universe earns him at LEAST a darn bank loan.

27:19 No, people were not giddy. They were not on board with this "new" Captain America. But the show seems aware enough to know that presenting a new Captain America was going to be a tough sell. John Walker seems somewhat sympathic as a guy who is apparently just trying to do his best with the burden of massive expectations, he also seems very much in over his head despite his military record. It's a complex situation.

While the show and the MCU in general can't seem to let go of the spectres of Steve and Tony, the fans can't seem to either. Even you, Kristen, kept saying things like "If Tony was here..." and "If Steve was here..." during this reaction. I know that it hasn't been as long for since you watched Endgame, but it has literally been almost *six years* since Endgame, and the fans still can't let it go and move on even now.
You start to wonder if the problem is that the other supporting characters aren't as compelling or not as well presented as worthy successors, or if it's because the fans are so obsessively stuck on the past that they aren't even willing to give the other characters being elevated to the spotlight the chance to compel them. It becomes a "chicken or the egg" situation. Is the MCU unable to move on because of the fans? Or are the fans unable to move on because of the MCU?

This is why Steve chose Sam NOT Bucky as Next Captain America (and i agree) .....
    (1) .... Steve familiarity to Sam regarding military RESCUES/ being heroic:
1a) ... Steve Rogers performed several military rescues saving soldiers and hostages during WW2.
Sam was an U.S military paraRESCUEmen unit (this is a real military division). This unit is also known as "Guardian Angels" in American military (yes, this is for REAL) who are the combat forces specifically organized, trained and equipped to conduct full spectrum conventional and unconventional combat RESCUE operations across during all phases of joint, coalition, and combined operations. as well as helping allies in all terrain including severely hostile situations. Basically a specializes unit performing rescues.
This is more heroic and closer to Rogers experience than being a trained assassin like Bucky even though it was not Bucky's intention.
1b) ... Additionally, the U.S military pararescue unit was created during WW2 which is the same time Rogers became Captain America.
1c)... It's also crazy amazing that the American military pararescue division are called "Guardian Angels" and Sam Wilson is literary a military pararesuemen aka a "Guardian Angel" who is now Captain America.... A Guardian Angel Captain America is awesome AF in my humble opinion.
In FATW ep1(Falcon and Winter Soldier tv series, episode One), we see Sam doing a military pararescue mission to rescue and extract a hostage.
    (2) ... Symbolic Morality:
Although Bucky has made some progress trying to redeeming himself, he still struggles with the moral implications of his past actions as the Winter Soldier. Captain America's mantle requires a strong moral compass, which Steve Rogers embodied and Steve saw that much more in Sam.
    (3)... Bucky's Emotional Baggage:
Bucky's experiences as the Winter Soldier and his subsequent struggles with PTSD make it challenging for him to take on the responsibility of being Captain America. The weight of his past actions and the guilt he carries would be a heavy burden. Steve Rogers did want that on him and also it does NOT set him as "ready" to be the symbol for an entire nation and the world.
    (4) ... Steve familiarity to Sam's Volunteer manner:
In Captain America 1:The First Avenger (2011), Bucky Barnes was actually AGAINST Steve Rogers joining the army. When Steve expressed his desire to enlist, Bucky tried to dissuade him, citing concerns about Steve's physical limitations and the dangers of war but Steve still volunteered to join the army even after knowing how much of a weakling he was (before the serum). And even when he was chosen, he was told the experiment might NOT be successful but Steve still VOLUNTEERED to proceed.
Dr. Abraham Erskine warns Steve Rogers (Captain America: The First Avenger, 2011).... "We've had... problems with the serum. Unstable results. One subject grew too aggressive. Another... didn't survive."
Sam Wilson is the FIRST person who is NOT connected or affiliated to SHIELD or any of the superheroes in any way to VOLUNTEER his help into active missions with Captain America and the Avengers. I repeat Sam VOLUNTEERED (Captain America 2: Winter Soldier movie 2014). Sam was NOT recruited like Nick Fury did to Tony Stark/ Ironman and he was not given command order like Nick Fury did to Black Widow for her to spy on Ironman/ Tony. Sam put his life on the line LITERALLY several times just to aid Steve.
Dialogue between Steve and Sam (Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)....
Sam Wilson: "You need help, Cap?"
    Steve Rogers: "I'm not asking."
Sam Wilson: "Didn't think you were. When do we start?"
Sam VOLUNTEERED the same way Steve did to join the super serum experiments and when Steve volunteered to join the army AGAINST Bucky's advise and when Steve Volunteered to save Allied forces POWs in Captain America 1 movie 2011.
(5)... Dialogue: Dr.Abraham Erkine to Steve Rogers (Captain America 1: First Avenger, 2011).
Dr.Abraham Erskine= "Yeah, but... there were other... effects. The serum was not ready. But MORE IMPORTANT, THE MAN. The serum amplifies everything that is inside, so good becomes great; bad becomes worse. This is why you were CHOSEN. Because the strong man who has known power all his life, may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows... COMPASSION."
Dr.Abraham Erskine= "Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing. THAT YOU WILL STAY WHO YOU ARE, NOT A PERFECT SOLDIER BUT A GOOD MAN."
👆This is the criteria Abraham Erskine (creator of the serum) set as the foundation for a Captain America when he CHOSE Steve Rogers by saying being a good man is "MORE IMPORTANT" than being a "Perfect soldier" (super strength, speed, etc like Bucky) whereby the serum only amplifies the good or bad in a person but it (the serum) is not the foundational requirement that defines who or what Captain America is and should be "A GOOD MAN" first and always. Basically an unshakable moral compass, pro-ethics and champion of optimism seeking to see the good in others first over how hard he can punch or how fast he can run.
In the source material/ comics, Sam became Captain America in 2014 (TEN YEARS AGO) and is still Captain America today.
(6)... Steve familiarity to Sam's bravery:
Sam has shown bravery and resilience willing to engage physically stronger opponents like against mind tranced Bucky in CA2: Winnter Soldier movie AND in FATW tv series against terrorists who juiced up on super soldier serum AND will also face off against Red Hulk in upcoming CA4: Brave New World. The same heroic fearlessness Steve Rogers always had even BEFORE he became Captain America.
Remember the scene when scrawny tiny Steve was being attacked by multiple bigger stronger bullies in CA1 when he said "I can do this all day." line when he had no super soldier serum enhancement?
Steve recognizes THAT in Sam. That courage to face off against greater opposition without any extra powers or abilities just like when Steve was still a smaller weakling (before the serum enhancement) but he never cowered against far bigger stronger bullies.
Evidently, Sam focused his time, efforts and skills to doing good even in war he trained to RESCUE. Steve took an instant liking to Sam from the moment they met and that was BEFORE he even knew any details about Sam. Steve's instincts were right.
    (7)... Public Perception of Bucky:
The world's perception of Bucky Barnes is still complex, given his past as the Winter Soldier. It would be challenging for him to gain the same level of trust and admiration as Steve Rogers, who was widely respected and admired. Sam Wilson does NOT have this problem.
    (8) ... Different Values at the time of choosing:
When Steve Rogers was making his choice, Bucky's values and motivations are different from Steve Rogers. While Steve was driven by a strong sense of optimism, ethics, honor, and morality, Bucky's head was guided by a desire for redemption and personal justice and frankly the brainwash coding was not yet removed in Avengers Endgame so Steve knew Bucky was NOT ready to be the next Captain America making Sam the default logical choice.
The removal of Bucky's brainwash coding occurred AFTER Avengers Endgame in Wakanda as shown in Falcon and Winter Soldier tv series (2021).
    (9) .... U.S Govt:
As much as Steve Rogers embodied the role of Captain America brilliantly and excellently, the unfortunate but undeniable fact remains that....
9a) ... "Captain America" was CREATED by the govt NOT Steve who was simply chosen.
9b) ...the govt will NOT allow Bucky to be the public face of American heroism wearing the American flag and shield after being a brainwashed murderous assassin for 50 years. Yes, Bucky served in WW2 US military but his time and actions as Winter Soldier assassin is waaaaay longer than that.
9c) .... Bucky's assassin background background was in favor for Russian interests (aka under Russian govt control) for over 50 years doing Russian favored missions which meant against American interests.
9d)... Sam Wilson has a clean record in the U.S military services and as an active services Avenger by Steve's side thus meeting the merits of both ends.
It would just be an added migraine to Bucky if Steve chose Bucky and Steve was VERY aware of this.
    (10) Insensitivity regardingTony Stark/Ironman:
At the end of Endgame movie when so many were still deeply grieving the loss of Tony Stark, it would have been utterly insensitive of Steve to award his choice of Next Captain America to the Bucky.... person who murdered Tony Stark's parents (brainwashed or not) when Bucky had not yet fully deprogrammed his brainwash assassin coding (which was wiped LATER in Falcon and The winter soldier series) and not fully redeemed himself yet at that time even though we saw him assist in the battle in Infinity War. Bucky is/ has been on his redemption arc but Endgame was too early too soon to make Bucky Captain America.
When Steve went back in time and lived his love life with Peggy Carter gaining additional 50-60years.... That was plenty of time for Steve to consider all these these issues before making his choice to choose Sam as his successor.
Personally, i think Steve already met Bucky first to choose him and Bucky probably .....most likely... refused due to the some of the above listed reasons. This left Sam as the only other logical choice.

The thing is, Bucky's right about Steve giving Sam the shield because he knew he was the best choice, but Sam is right too in why he gave it up. The angry conversation they were having in front of Isaiah's house wouldn't have drawn the attention of the cops if Sam was white, and as well-meaning as Bucky (and Steve) are, that's a thing they wouldn't be able to understand because that's not their lived experience.

the prejudice against john is crazy, just because he isnt steve. he's not only not done anything wrong, he's literally one of the most qualified people to take the role. he's only demonstrated his understanding of the importance of his role, shown that he's just trying to do the best job he can, and he has to face pushback in a military operation against terrorists because sam and bucky are so childish as to go out of their way to make his job harder.

It's not about everyone else agreeing sam did what he thought was the right move for him at the time I don't understand why people give him 💩 for that when Steve did say he knew the truth about Tony or when Tony messed around and made Ultron people forget they are human and that's what make the characters so real because they make the same mistakes anyone would make in stressful situation when your mind is all over the place

I kept thinking during episode 1, just wait for Bucky's reaction.
As an alert, this is the series that is most effected by the Covid shut downs. Mainly because the Flagsmashers whole story got majorly trimmed because I think they might have continued. But this is a fun series which I think gave Marvel the idea that it could handle comedies.
But John Walker, sigh, he takes you on such a journey. But, its good you watched Black Widow....

Yes, we were all supposed to feel offended by John Walker becoming Captain America and he was definitely supposed to come across as unworthy, but I don't think that the writers anticipated the level of anaphylaxis that so many viewers have had. It's really quite crazy. I heard somebody say that Wyatt Russell even got hate mail and threats for even playing the character LOL

Ah yes, John Walker, who managed to earn the Medal of Honor 3 times despite that feat not being possible since the end of WWI when the military changed the law on awarding the MoH after Dan Daly very nearly got his third MoH IRL (his third was downgraded into a Navy Cross and a Distinguished Service Medal, which are basically tied for 2nd highest honor, cause 2+2=1 in politics math I guess)....that detail has always bothered me about the character, just saying he's a MoH recipient is enough to mark him as a complete badass soldier. Oh well, at least the show gives us more on Bucky and his past.

  • @chadbennett7873

With Tony gone, who will they get their upgraded equipment? Perhaps Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne, but that's sort of another universe. The replacement Cap is played by Wyatt Russell, Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn's son & Kate Hudson's half brother. He does a pretty good job making sure you don't like him. I love this series, but I love Hawkeye more. You'll go crazy for it, I think, but you need to see Black Widow first. Always fun watching you react.

Totally not!! She's actually exactly what they need, Both of them! I don't know if it was said in the full episode, but mine straight-up told me, "I Am Not here to be your friend. If you don't leave here without hating me in some way, I'm not doing my job." Then, when I'd made a lot of hard to make self-realizations, she finally looked me in the eye, leaned forward & said, "see, I am your friend!" She's "mean" because Bucky (and Sam!) is a tough guy so she has to be tougher. That 'gaze into the other's eyes' exercise was brilliant, & she totally Knew they'd try to outdo each other.😂 She was great! Love your reviews and on to 3 & 4....
