      There are worse apps, but many of the processing effects are gimmicky and the new AI features need work.

    • @EricMustardman
      @EricMustardman 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Asset management is very good, no two ways about that. The RAW converter is OK, but not great. The transform tool is no better than the one that was already included in the first versions of Lightroom almost 20 years ago. Denoising is available, but absolutely no match for DxO or Topaz. AI masking and auto masking are ridiculous, I'm much faster with traditional masking in DxO PhotoLab, not to even mention Lightroom's excellent auto masking. The same applies to the repair and healing tools.
      ON1 almost overwhelms users with tons of features and free gimmicks such as hundreds of LUTs, textures, borders and presets, but at the same time, they underwhelm users with the mediocre quality of most features. And seriously: Who on Earth needs a sky swapping tool?
      It seems to me that ON1 Photo RAW targets hobby photographers who want to pimp their snapshots quickly and effortlessly, but provides no tools for professionals or even aspiring amateurs. It's a do-everything-in-one-place software and as such it's a jack of all trades, master of none. If you're content with that, Photo RAW might be a suitable software for you. For me, it isn't.

    As a photographer myself, i find on1 raw to be very capable tool. This review was over critical especiallially on brilliance AI piece. It gives you plenty of control to adjust. Editing photos is a creative process and very subjective. anyone expecting a tool to do everything for them perfectly by a click is being unrealistic. No tool is perfect i found on1 to allow me to to do everything at a fraction of the cost as others. Yes i do have adobe suite at work so i know it well. I also used capture one before and own neo too which is brilliant for quick adjustments. As you stated, the devs have put a lot in this features wise and not all have been executed perfectly but if you have a limited budget then its really between this,neo and acdsee. The other two your comparing to are nearly 3x the price.

    Thank you. Same melody for half a decade - 'almost usable'. I got me a license years back and ended up being deeply disappointed with ON1 within a month, and the wasted money was not the issue. Since then, I have been aware of the fact, that improvements are introduced in small increments, as if a totally well functioning application would prevent future sales.
    Changing subject: It would be nice if we, your loyal audience, could download the raw images you use for tests, e.g. the one you used for testing the demosaicing in this video - It would be interesting to compare how the favorite raw editor performs.

    Slightly harsh! I use both PhotoLab and ON1, as a Fuji shooter PhotoLab is great for correcting images, but I find ON1 better for creative edits.
    On the Brilliance AI you could have either turned down the whole opacity of the change, or better just opened up the advanced settings and turned down the colour using the slider, just two clicks which is not bad.

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Martin. This is true - I could have gone and fixed it up - but I could do that in LR with the auto button too. And if I have to go in and alter it every time I use it - why not just do the edits myself in the first place? I found the Brilliance AI to be inconsistent and the masks it produced all needed tweaking, therefore removing any time-saving benefits from the process. It's not a terrible tool, but the developers make very bold claims for it and I found it failed to meet expectations. P.S. Is your username a reference to the colony on LV-426?

    I completely agree with your comments about Keyword AI. You did not do a photo with people so you did not mention some other totally useless keywords such as "nose" and "chin". Masking is also a weak spot - mainly refining the edges. They have improved this over time, but there are still issues in some situations. Interestingly the feature you liked the most is one that I do not use (grading, finding photos). I make the file name of a photo useful in finding a group of photos taken at the same general time or that contain specific people. However I am still waiting for ON1 to be able to ID specific people (a feature PhotoShop Elements has had for years). I use PSE to go through photos and find unique people whose names then get added to the metadata of all photos they are in.

    Thanks! I found this very useful. Looking for a raw editor for basic work, should be relatively easy to use. I'll strike ON1 from my list now. Still hanging between PhotoLab and Lightroom, with slight preference for the first because of no subscription.

    For 'non-professional' photo editors who are not into importing into an app but just using the O/S file manager ON 1 is far superior. In fact with the latest updates I have canned Lightroom and just use Bridge/ACR/Photoshop. For finishing off or creative effects I use Actions/Scripts and ON1 Effects 2023. If anything, it's the lack of an equivalent to Actions and/or Scripts which is the main negative for me.

    As an ON1 user for a few years now - 1 that has upgraded yearly eventually when a cheap enough deal was offered - I downloaded the trial of 2024 when it first came along and was disappointed enough not to bother considering upgrading this year. They do have a history of promising the miraculous and delivering the medicre (eg their AI masking when it first came along a year or 2 back). However, their new 2024.5 upgrade is due this month and (they say) features enormous improvements to the AI masking and speed of use. Whether this is the upgrade 2024 SHOULD have been...who knows. Sounds like that's what they're trying to accomplish. Be interesting if you did a review of that when it comes along.
    No issues with your criticisms of 2024 - on a user group there are many grumbles about how useless Brilliance AI has turned out to be, and the denoise AI.

    For someone who doesn't want an expensive lightroom or photoshop, ON1 is fine for me. It can do HDR, it can do panorama and even Focus bracketing and I would say better than Luminar NEO. I'm not sure, but Capture One and even DxO Photolab can't do this. And for me, as a landscape photographer, these tweaks are important.

    As an amateur photographer I don’t have real big requirements for photo editing. Currently I’m on the photography plan for Lightroom and photoshop which costs around $14/mth with 1tb of storage.
    Wondering if getting the basic On1 outright and pointing it to iCloud Drive for storage would work. I haven’t looked at the pricing yet. But I would have it on my Mac Mini and MacBook Air as well as the iPad Pro 12.9.
    200gb iCloud storage is about $5/mth.
    Only other thing is tethered capture. I don’t do it much but when I do it’s bloody handy for my family portrait shoots.
    What do you think, Andy?

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like it'd be a good fit for you. You get a month to test it on the free trial and you can see if the iCloud is a viable option. You'd have to check install limitations though - not sure how many they allow.

      @@Andyhutchinson I installed it on the iPad. Seems easy enough to use. But for cloud sync there is a charge (forget how much - brain is too frazzled at 7.20am) but it stores images in the Photos app. Not what I want.
      When I go away I might take the ipad or the Macbook (or both). With Lightroom on the iPad, new images imported from the SD card get uploaded to the cloud and sync across the Mini and the MBA.
      I think that I'll stick with LrC for the time being. If I could change the location of images storage on the iPad then I'd seriously consider On1.

    Finally something on Portrait Editing, Hey Andy I have another question for you concerning presets. Do On1 raw have any presets like Lightroom has for portraits? It seems like 95% of all the writing on youtube only deals with Landscape photos when it comes to ON1 Raw. I have to admit one of the luring things about Lightroom is the writers aren't afraid to deal with editing portraits on a daily basis. The presets that deal with the face and individual parts of the face and body are very very appealing but it seems like on1 can do the same thing it just needs to be talked about more. I prefer to stay in On1 unless I have to go into Photoshop or Neo. Can you discuss apples to apples Lightroom's workflow vs On1 workflow? Tell me what you think and how can I make On1 act as if it was lightroom.

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure Mark. If you pay for the full version you do get access to that library and there's a tonne of presets in there - be very surprised if there weren't some specialised portrait ones. :)

    I use On1 for all my work. I don't like the DXO workflow though the results are good and Lightroom is just ransomeware for someone my age - I still want to edit my photos even I can no longer afford the upgrade. I agree with your thoughts on Brilliance AI - the results can be garish and the masking dreadful - but AI Auto is still available as an option, and I prefer the results as a basis for fine adjustments. Pity it can't be made default. Too much of the available options are hidden for no real benefit, they take time to find. My favourite mask is probably luminance, if you can find it - who thought a light bulb was a good idea?

  • @philipzwick
    @philipzwick ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I gave you a thumbs down because you failed to illustrate a major benefit of Brilliance AI, which are the local adjustments it makes to the image. These adjustments and their masks can be accessed to tweak the result to taste without having to go through individual masking as with Super Select. Which you dinged by picking a very difficult image to mask with the boat overlaps and tricky masts. Thus, BAI does much more than say Auto in Lightroom or the previous version of On1 Raw.
    Then you spent a lot of time being critical of Keyword AI, a feature that does not have anything to do with editing images. While ignoring the ability to apply a multitude of useful Effects non-destructively in On1 Raw that require Photoshop with Lightroom. Also, you describe your preferences like Capture One with no mention of the cost differences. So your review is incomplete and biased.

    • @Andyhutchinson
      @Andyhutchinson  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for taking the time to reply, Philip. Funnily enough I did talk about the masks that Brilliance AI produces, but I removed it from the final edit of this video because it was 35 minutes long! Also I didn't find those local adjustments to be of much use, partly because the masking was inconsistent and partly because I didn't think the edits looked any good. I guess I should have said that all AI editing is pointless, since it will never match what we, the photographers, really want. But I do take your point and I should at least have mentioned those local adjustments in the video. The central issue is that it's not as capable a RAW editor as other applications and if you're starting from that point then why not just use an app that has a better demosaicing engine in the first place? (Which isn't C1 incidentally).
      As to the keywords - I concentrated the review on the new AI features because that's the main point of difference between this and previous versions. I always have a look at the way developers are marketing their products and focus on those features that they're pushing. In terms of effects there's really not much in there that LR can't do and what differences there are tend to be gimmicky things like sun flares and weather that something like Luminar Neo does much better and which no self-respecting landscape photographer would ever use anyway.

    • @philipzwick
      @philipzwick ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I accept that you as a professional landscape photographer would put the initial raw processor as the most important thing and judge software accordingly. However for us advanced amateurs who are looking to process our travel and family images quickly yet with some creativity, On1 Raw is excellent. And 2024, with the ability of Brilliance AI to perform batch edits "brilliantly" (although sometimes with too much color IMO) and then adjust using the excellent mask options readily available, provides a significant upgrade in performance. I just did a difficult harbor image with layers of boats and the masking selection of the boats, while not perfect, was fixed quickly with the perfect brush.
      While I like your videos and style, I think you should realize that there are different levels of viewers when it come to photo software, and comment accordingly. @@Andyhutchinson

    I have used On1 since 2022 and agree that the vision behind the software is good but coding execution leaves a lot to be desired. I have found it to be buggy and unreliable, having been told by support staff to uninstall it the hard way (having to disable virus software and use CC Cleaner to tidy up) several times due to database issues. The latest version is supposed to be faster but I have found the opposite, starts of fast but then after using it over time it is half as fast as the 2023 version. As Andy says coding needs to improve. If Adobe was a bit more user friendly and had a simpler structure I would drop this program even though I would need to pay an annual subscription.

      And yet the comments section here would suggest otherwise. I fully understand the purpose of the 'local' tab - it's for 'local' adjustments. Adjustments, incidentally, which are nowhere near as easy to make as pretty much every other RAW editor on the market (with the possible exception of ACDSee) thanks to some decidedly dodgy masking tools. I don't have any favourites when I'm reviewing these apps - I simply point out the flaws. I realise this isn't very common on this platform where marketing dollars buy reviews, but I have a bit more integrity than that.
