Idol was released in 2018 and is full of symbolism and references to their journey as BTS up till that point. Eg The scene where they are all sitting down at a table is similar to the scene in Blood Sweat & Tears mv. Scott : there’s an ARMY saying “ once you Jim in you can’t Jim out” :)
This song is a response to a lot of criticism: lack of color or too much color; lack of culture elements or too much... people always find something to spread hate.
Well, they decided to "elevate" all the critics to the maximum level! 😂😂😂 And, to me, the outcome was simply awesome!

OMG.. Scott JimIN... so funny. It happens.. It is unavoidable. Jimin has that effect on people in general, female or male...there is something about him that captivates. Not my bias but I do love him very much. I loved Sam's reaction!!! This song is going to stay in your heads for a while, so catchy. Now, Scott is also right saying that it may not be his favorite song, It is one I love but not my very favorite. the thing you said about now being able to take your eyes of jimin, that was the exact same thing that happened to me.
this song was my gateway to BTS. i had to google who he was after that and in every video without knowing it, my eyes would fall on jimin again, even if they changed in appearance. i could still tell it was him because of his movements. he is campitaving and i heard so many reactors and army talking about the same thing.
This song is a great concert song. Just imagine thousands of people singing “Can’t stop me loving myself” It’s amazing.

LOVE JIMIN! ❤❤❤ they are all so great but I feel you; Jimin's charisma is felt even through the screen! My eyes get pulled to him too even before I knew anything about him! This a powerful song and the symbolism is extensive. You should watch: BTS - IDOL explained by a Korean. During Golden Disk Awards show, while Idol groups were sitting on the stage, BTS performed this song the stage actually shook from their dancing. When they perform it live, which I prefer to watch, they are FIERCE.

My suggestion is this. Check out BTS performances at MNET / MAMA award shows..... 2018, 2019... maybe even earlier. While watching, try to remember that it is not a BTS concert but an award show! They kill it!! Idol at the award shows is unbelievable! There are soooo many great performances. Narrowing down the list is impossible! Good luck!
MV is full of Korean symbolism...they're wearing modern hanbok, the rabbit in the moon is part of our Korean folklore, the tiger is a symbol of Korea....just to name a few

This wasn’t my favorite at first, but it’s top five now because of the live performances. Also, there are tons of Korean cultural references in it and now that I know about them, it makes it super interesting. It’s also a clap back to people who say their videos are all CG, they were like Oh no, THIS is what all CG looks like. Ty!
Hello Mr Sam and Mr Scott. Thank you for the energetic reaction. IDOL was actually a song against all criticism they faced.
A lot of emphasis has been given to Korean culture here and they had reasons for that. But yes you are right they are master in transitioning between languages be it Korean and English or Japanese and English.. They have different Genre of Music in their catalogue, this is a very bright song and i know to some it might not appeal (As Mr Scott said compared to other song he did not like it so much). That is the charm of BTS they have a never ending cauldron where there is something for everyone. I hope as you go on this journey you unravel more of their creation which you will def like.
It’s a song with a lot of significance because they are celebrating their culture and their pride, it has a lot of details that only Koreans would get which holds a special place and has that old music and history mixed with a very catchy, danceable and modern sound. BTS does this very well in other songs too. Thanks for reacting! Loved the edit at the end with the lights and music when one of you guys sings! 😂

This was not my favorite song on first listen either. I didn’t LOOOOOOVE it until I saw it in a live performance. It is now my favorite song to SEE live. There is nothing like being in a crowd of 50,000+ ARMY and hearing them all sing “You can’t stop me loving myself” at the top of their lungs! It’s EPIC!!!
Idol grew on me a lot. The video was honestly so over the top that it overshadowed the song. Of course now I understand the purpose of the video, but I didn't at first. I agree, it's perfect for concerts!
Beyond the fantastic message of the song, this entire video is a huge f you to people who talked crap about them. Oh you don’t like our use of CGI? Have a complete fever dream. Too western? We’ll put on modern hanbok and use traditional Korean imagery and cultural references. RM got crap for using filters during his lives, so they put some in here. V got told he looked ugly in glasses, so they slapped a pair on him (also, what???). Suga’s Snow White sweater because he’s “too pale.” That’s only scratching the surface of the many things they’ve thrown in there. My petty self absolutely loves everything they did with this.
Idol is THAT song that finally turned me into an ARMY. I love everything about this song but mostly the subtle FU's that are like Easter eggs throughout the entire MV. I was able to see BTS live twice and Idol was on the set list - NOTHING and I mean nothing compares to 50k people singing, "You can't stop me loving myself!!". It was a totally surreal moment and I wish everyone was able to see them live in concert at least once.
@@sometimessiri.8559 I am so jealous! I did get to go to Suga's tour and yes, an entire concert yelling "I love, I love, I love myself" was pretty amazing. One of my favorite videos is their medley from Osaka that ends with Idol. Just amazing.

This live performance they have done to this song has made the setting area of the other artists move on their performance at GDA (golden disc awards) there’s fancams that shows the artists reaction to it happening, at a concert the stage started to collapse and the staff hold it up so they could finish their performance, they were told after that they had to change the last songs with no dance so it was safe, the reason we know about it is their camera team that documented it happened for their behind the scenes documentary for their concert.
This song was written as an answer on the criticism they had got from people that claimed they were to western and was forgetting their culture, as others have mentioned watch their MMA (Melon Music Awards) 2018 performance that shows many of the korean culture with the different dancers and other performers that was part of the performance. Jimin got an culture award for his fan dance he did on MMA.
DKDKTV has a video that explain many of the different meanings that are in the video.
They did a collaboration with Nicki Minaj for this song and they did also a dance challenge for the song that is shown in this version.
So you HAVE watched Taylor Mari’s “A Guide to BTS Members”: The BANGTAN Seven?! From the beginning they were made fun of, shunned, laughed at, dismissed. THEN THEY STARTED MAKING IT BIG! This song is yet another dis at those folks & their derisive, disrespectful, remarks and actions as they tried to derail these FANTASTIC, GIFTED, YOUNG MEN! BTS stuck together and worked extremely hard to prove them wrong & learned to LOVE THEMSELVES, both individually and as brothers. Once they had learned this, they began to FIND ARMY & CHANGE US & TEACH US HOW TO LOVE💜👑
This song is one of their best concert songs out of the many! I cried my heart out :"you cant stop me loving myself oh oh ohoh" during thier Busan concert. The chills i got from start of the concert to finish is mind blowing. Being able to attend a concert that is part of BTS's history is a lifetime achievement. Twas so special.
There's an excellent explanation by a Korean on DKDKTV. There's so much imagery that non-Koreans miss. And I think we have a new Jimin bias. If your eye often goes to one person, that's who your bias is! 💜
You should see them do this live and ARMY joins right in! ( LOL, once you Jim-in you can't Jim-out. Everyone loves Jimin. All the korean symbols are meaning ful, if you don't watch the explanation video on this one, you really miss out.
When you experience it live at a concert, it is transformative. The energy is off the charts!
"For some reason, whenever he's in the scene, I always see him" - that's totally how you find your bias, lol. When my friend was getting me into BTS, I kept being like, "Wow, look at that one!" and she'd say, "That's V!" and then the next video I'd be like, "I really like that one!" and she'd be like, "That's the same one as last time!" and it just kept on like that, and sure enough, several years later I remain a V bias. 😊

We knew you guys would love colors 😂 This was basically BTS saying “fuck you” to haters and the critism they were experiencing back then. So they took a MV video, took in small details that haters and critics were saying and just smashed it all into one video. And it is one of my favourite newer songs after being an ARMY for 9 years (will hit 10 next year).
As an OT7, I adore the “Jimin effect” that you experienced in the end. I love all my boys, and all us armys say “once you Jim in, you can’t jim out” - and you can’t. Just like Suga said “Come to one of our concerts, you won’t wanna go anywhere else!” (BTS effect). Hi guys. It must be taken into account about Idol that it is a song loaded with symbolism both in images, costumes, narrative, lyrics and in concept. And in the most superficial of its intentions it is still an almost guttural and satirical response to a pride acquired after many personal struggles for being idols, a profession considered superficial and prefabricated that opposes the naturalness of being a singer or rapper. In this topic they are proud of their choices and artistic career in which they have given the idol image a much more artistic, committed and recognized dimension (the result of their own achievements) where being an idol implies being singers, rappers, dancers, composers, lyricists and much more. I think one of the reasons BTS made this song is that they were receiving a lot of criticism at the time that they were becoming too westernised ( although how this was different from other kpop groups at the time, I’m not sure).
Anyway, there is a lot of symbology in this MV, it’s quite fascinating, so it’s worth watching one of the videos explaining it. If there is one by DKDKTV, they are good.

You are definitely not alone. Jimin was the first to capture my attention too. The phenomenon is known to ARMY as “the Jimin Effect” and the phrase “Once you Jim-in, you can’t Jim-out”. Gender/age/etc. seems to matter little. There are endless (often hilarious) compilation videos highlighting it, from babies to seniors.
This is one of those songs/music videos where an explanation video is virtually required for non-Koreans because it’s packed with cultural elements that add several layers to the meaning beyond the surface (still important!) “I don’t care if you criticize me, I love who I am/who I have become”.

It came out at a time when they started to gain attention from the general public in the West - not Army, they already had our attention for years by then, they were doing a sold out stadium tour 😁It was a weird time around 2018-2019, people started noticing them, they started to have success on the charts and when the public thought okay, new group, nobody knows them, they were absolutely gobsmacked when they realized they were touring stadiums with tickets selling out in literal minutes. (cue war flashbacks of Wembley ticketing - sold out in 90 minutes for two nights...). With success obviously came the naysayers and haters.The guys deliberately crammed every negative comment and stereotype about kpop into one video. Kpop songs are too vibrant and colorful? Okay, they used every single color in the MV they could think of. Jhope too childish? He wears Bugs Bunny. Suga's skin is too white! There you go, Snow White on his clothes. During one of his livestreams RM was told not to use the filters, hence the snapchat filters on him. Same with V's glasses. Too Americanized? They dance in hanbok, the tradicional Korean clothing in tradicional Korean buildings to African beat, the video is full of Korean folklore elements like the Moon Rabbit, the Lion dance... And so on and so on. Every single picture and scene is there for a reason. You need to see the explanation video "BTS Idol explained by a Korean" on the channel DKDKTV.

The video for "Idol" is visually distinct from all of the others because it's a chaotic mashup of a number of distinctly Korean symbols (the tiger; the lion dancers; the pagoda; the black hanbok the boys wear) with imagery and references to global culture (Anpanman, a Japanese cartoon; John Woo; giraffes and palm trees; a commercial jetliner; the globe sitting on the corner of the table). K-pop videos are rarely random in their imagery, and BTS videos pretty much NEVER are. Artistic choices they make in their videos are always meticulous and deliberate.
So the colorful chaos in this video for "Idol" stands out on purpose from other videos they've made. It's far from random. They're saying something. It's up to you to contemplate what they're saying. 🙂

Regarding explanations for this one... XCeleste's explanation primarily centres around all the personal and group related details and DKDKTV's explanation focuses on all the cultural symbolism. That means they hardly overlap and it's well worth watching both of them. Idol is legit the ultimate FU without the actual FU. 😂
