For those with short attention spans:
    5. Think about why you are buying? Is it for investment or pleasure?
    4. Research the watch - history, prices, etc
    3. Performance - make sure everything works as described when it arrives and that it keeps time
    2. Condition - ask if it's all original, check for over-polishing
    1. Reputation of the seller/dealer/store - worth paying extra for a good source

Funnily enough, I just today received my first "highish-end" vintage watch purchase today, which I found on eBay. A 1993 Rolex Datejust SS silver tapestry dial with box and papers.
My advice: (1) Firstly, if you are paying a bit extra for the box, make sure it's the right box, it should look right. Tons of fake boxes out there. Also, make sure the papers match the watch. (2) Secondly, eBay's "Buy it Now" prices are usually a bit higher than they should be. The best deals appear to be on "Make an Offer" listings or regular bidding listings. (3) Lastly, don't fall too deep in love with a particular watch. Be willing to walk away, if the deal doesn't make sense.

Recently I discovered your channel and I'm enjoying it a lot. It's rare to find someone with class and sophistication that isn't trying too hard.
However I would recommend caution against the Better Business Bureau, they are not run by the US government. They are a private group, and there are many stories of people paying to get a higher rating than they deserve, or to prevent a good rating from falling.

Thanks so much for the great video. Your words are stirring and you advocate for dealing with sellers who have integrity. I love the old watches, I think because of their history, known or not known. They're treasures. Somebody might have been wearing that watch during a war, or in a courtroom, or driving cross-country, or raising six kids. Magnificent. For the buyer buying for personal use, make sure the watch fits you, goes with the way you dress, the way you come across. Very important. Thanks again!!

Hi TGV, watching The Urban Gentry really made me into watches, I have an old Seiko that my Dad got from his uncle when he was getting into Highschool (1974) and also just recently bought a vintage 1984 Seiko Digital LCD watch, really like your videos especially those ones about Seiko, all the best.

Thanks a lot Tristano, for sharing your wisdom!👍 I am very close to making my first vintage purchase. It’s also and expensive watch for me, so I’m trying to do all the things you suggested including a lot of online research. The videos you’ve done where are you go through some eBay and Chronos24 postings have helped a great deal. I came back to revisit this particular video to make sure I had followed your list of suggestions, and I have! 🧐 So I am really ready to take the plunge. I’ll let you know how it turns out if I pull the trigger!😊

I was stalking eBay for a limited piece and found a seller who was relatively new with 200 feedback all positive. I was still suspicious and kept asking her questions. In the end, it was a legit buy but not before I researched the serial number, the contents of the package etc. very good points TGV, hope this helps people in their next purchases!

Wonderful advice, Tristano. As you know from my posts to the Watch Club, I've been on the hunt for vintage watches for months. Indeed, I've learned a lot over that time. Some watches turned out to be of lesser quality than their sellers had described them to be, while others were spot on.
A tip I can offer anyone looking for vintage (or a new watch for that matter) is to buy something that interests you and brings you joy (like you said in your video) and NOT because it's simply vintage and selling for a great price. If it meets both criteria, then fantastic! I wish I had been more discerning with my earlier purchases, but the silver lining is that I got to know more about what to look for in a used watch and to define my tastes for them.

I agree resale is not the most important. I got tired, however, of my first 2 watches and wanted to get what I consider a real luxury watch so I sold both and was able to make a few hundred on each. It was enough to take away the sting of buying the used luxury piece. I consider it a win that I didn't lose money on my first two but that was only because I got them on the grey market.

Just had a not so good event through a dealer on Chrono24 purchasing a JLC. When I checked address it turned out to be a parking garage. In addition, there was that I just don't feel comfortable with this. Really wanted the watch but buy with your head and not your heart especially in this type of circumstance. Even reading reviews on the site how can you be sure they are legit.... I don't know if I can ever feel comfortable purchasing this way.

TGV, Have had some good luck buying Vintage pieces on eBay. The one time that I was burned was with a pompous seller who stated that I could have the vintage piece serviced by my jeweler due to the watch malfunction and send him the receipt. Ciao TGV. I do totally agree with your list. Independently by the value of the watch, the most important thing is the reputation of the seller. This, to me, means also the service rendered after the sale in case of repair or whatever is necessary! The communication (written or by phone, for example) helps to establish a relationship of mutual trust. Fortunately, I found a great honest and professional seller here in Italy when I bought my Hamilton Jazzmaster Seaview Chrono. Ciao e grazie per i tuoi video! Diego

What are your thoughts on purchasing thru Pawn Shops? I've seen a few pieces in various shops lately at pretty reasonable prices, with boxes and papers. However, something with these shops doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's the fact that these watches are here because the previous owner fell on hard times and needed money quickly.
Morally, is it ok? Have you or anyone else got opinions or experience of this?
    Kind regards.

Hi! Looking to pick up a vintage! do you know if all reviews on chrono24 are posted by verified users? Or could they be faked?

  • @cjcar63

Thanks so much. I am actually in the process of negotiating with a dealer on Chrono24 for a pre-owned Speedmaster Reduced listed as "service completed May 2017". The only point on your checklist that I am lacking is the the dealr's lack of selling history, (member since 2016 with only 7 verified transactions... no listed feedback). He has responded quickly thus far to my inquiries, and sounds professional. I am awaiting further photos that I requested as well as more details regarding the servicing. In terms of selling history, although I would be happier if he were a dealer with a long and trusted reputation, I am inclined to believe that everyone has to start somewhere. Am I being naive in this situation?

Buy the dial, and buy the seller. My two best pieces of advice. If you're gonna buy a piece with replacement parts at the very least the watch should have an original dial in good condition. The dial is what you're going to look at most. Also prefer forthcoming sellers with good reputation. I've sold for less by being completely honest but in the long run it's made it much easier for me to sell watches and I've established numerous reliable relationships with dealers and collectors.

Nice video and great advice. Once I get my used watches in hand I take them to my local, trusted watchmaker. I have them tested for amplitude and water proof tight seals. They've helped me identify some small broken bits that occurred during shipping but didn't prevent the watch from working so I may have never known to have it checked. They've even been able to identify if the watch had genuine or aftermarket Rolex lubricants used. Isn't that crazy? My local watch maker is awesome and only opens watches in a room with negative pressure to mitigate dust and debris from entering the case. Thanks TGV!

The only watch in our house that was bought used was my wife's Cartier Tank Francais. I found it on eBay from a seller not too far from us. Popped down to see the watch and got it for a steal. It was 12 years old and never been polished plus box a papers including original receipt. Got it for £1600 and these are £4200 new! Had it serviced a couple of months later including a polish and it came back indistinguishable from new. Right result!

Excellent advise Tristano. My number one and your number one are pretty much the same - buy the seller. If I'm looking at a watch for sale on a forum such as WUS I'll check out the seller's history of posts - how many, how active... You can get a good feel for a person by this. Another point - photos. If in doubt ask for more. A tip for those selling, if you want my attention post lots of nice photos. As a buyer that's the first thing I look at. Ciao, John
