This climbing plant has fragrant white flowers that bloom at night. The flowers reflect moonlight during the day to attract moths for pollination. It thrives in cool, humid environments with strong winds. The plant is found in many forests across Thailand, especially at the summit of Doi Chiang Dao, at an elevation of about 2,100 meters. The name “helenae” is derived from Helena, the wife of Wilson, the botanist who discovered and named the plant.
