As a railroader I use to go thru socks 2 times a year. Bought Darn Tough Work Socks (Steely)5 years ago and wear them 2 days in a row(no smell), and yet to use the warranty for holes. And during winter I get my thermo Darn Tough Socks out same results.
Carl…. I have worn Darn Tough for over the last ten years in the Air Force and last seven years in the airlines. I have had to warranty return only two pair that developed holes. They wear like iron. If you order directly from their website they offer a military or first responder discount. Support this great American company. 🇺🇸
Railroad Socks brand. Made in Missouri. Over 100 years old. Their 50% merino sock is great for all the same reasons as Darn Tough. I used to wear Smartwool (good), moved over to Darn Tough (great), but then tried Railroad Socks. They offer a similar lifetime (one time) guarantee and are less than half the price of Darn Tough. My experience with quality and durability of the socks puts them on par with Darn Tough. Even if time proves otherwise, the socks were less than half the cost AND I find them even more comfortable. Quantity has a quality all it's own. Regardless everyone should up their very important sock game!
They do make a durable sock, If I could only get them to stay up. By 9am they are sagging down often enough to drive me nuts. The Kirkland wool blend are ok though. So if they make them, something is slightly different.
The Darn Tough warranty is legitimate. I had 3 pairs replaced recently after owning them for a few years. They gave me a credit for a little more than the 3 pairs were worth and I could apply it to anything on their site. I don't feel a need to wear any other brand.
My sister lives in Vermont and brought me over a couple pair darn tough and I love them. The are a bit expensive in Scotland but I would still buy them. 👍
I swear by Smartwools and have many of them in various lengths and thicknesses -- I work outside on my feet all day and they simply last and last and last... and maintain their form... and stay up when worn . I do have a couple pair of Darn Tough and my only gripe with them is they are a bit rigid and constricting around the calf and take some time to brake in. Also Fox River socks are made in the US and not bad at all, and lower priced. Anyhow, always great videos, Carl.
Yeah, while it might be “weird” it’s also worth looking into toe socks. For trades work, or ANYTHING, they are usually superior. In comfort, moisture management, health (helping your toes splay out as long as the toe box is big enough), chafing/injury, etc. Hikers and backpackers love them. Where they fail is limitations on materials, and an inability to be as thick as a normal sock because you can only make the toes too thick. There is only one real RUGGED toe sock, that being XoSkin from my research. They have a mostly wool blend sock, which is really nice as the only other wool toe sock available is from Injinji, and from most accounts Injinji’s fall apart EXTREMELY quickly, and are basically overpriced garbage (not their other socks tho, just the wool ones). Even from these options, you won’t find a HIGH percentage natural material toe sock due to design limitations im assuming. Which is fine as long as you have a DECENT amount of wool in it. The thickness issue can also just be resolved by putting a high wool content THICK sock over the toe sock if needed for extreme cold. Other major issue is due to lack of competition and other factors, I’ve never seen a lifetime warranty or even a decent warranty for toe socks.
Ive been wearing them in winter for years now. Love the over the calf Mountaineering heavyweight. The fact they almost go up to your knee adds alot of extra warmth compared to regular socks. Price is definitely high but out of the 8 or so pairs i have none have failed yet.
Been wearing Darn Tough Steely 1/4 Sock Cushion daily for the past 2 years. I wear them for every activity in my life. Work/safety boots, fitness/cycling, walking/running, going out with wife for date night. Literally everything, and they just perform no matter the conditions. Feet stay cool in the hot and humid and warm in the cold and damp. Only once had an issue and it was a sizing one when I first got a pair, no hassle guarantee, went to a store that is a vendor and swapped out Zero Questions. They are easily the best sock company out there. Kudos for the review.
HA!!! Great minds think alike, Carl! I have 6 pairs being delivered tomorrow plus a FREE Nalgene DTV bottle. Been wearing them for nearly 20 years. Still wearing those original pairs. I have NEVER worn a pair out. I keep waiting to return a pair. Ain't gonna happen. Newest purchase is for the vintage 1976 Vasque (by Red Wing) hiking boots in nearly unworn condition I bought last week. 48 years old and nearly indestructable, just like the Darn Tough Vermont socks. Contest to see which wears out first. I'll be dead by then!!! I'm sending you a photo. Stay well Carl!!!
Have been buying for years, but my complaint is they get to be a little tight after a while and harder to put on. I have to say the most comfortable sock are Bombas merino wool blend! They wear out quickly but willing to sacrifice for comfort! They also replace free and donate one pair for every pair you buy!
have three pairs , two on return for warranty and sent one off in the past. honestly the best wool belnd out there. wish they made t shirts and toe socks !
I’m a laborer doing site work and all I wear for socks are darn tough, smart wool and Kirkland wool socks I noticed that the smart wool and the Kirkland ones are a little thicker but the darn tough socks are by far the best socks I’ve ever worn for work I never have socks falling down or bunching up on my feet I’ve also noticed that on the super hot days my feet and boots don’t smell as bad
Redwing socks, 77% merino wool, spandex, and nylon. Made in USA. Can only get them in a redwing store but about $22 a pair but they have the most merino wool percentage of any brand I found.
Wearing Darn Toughs as I watch this. Best socks ever! I’ve used the warranty. It’s legit. You do have to pay to ship back the old socks though. But then they give you a code to buy any replacement pair you want.
Darn Tough are easily some of the best made socks out there, but that being said there are at least two brands I can think of who give them some incredibly close competition for that top spot, first up (and I can’t believe you didn’t include these in your initial comparison) are Wigwam socks made in Sheboygan Wisconsin since 1905! They offer a variety of options for different use cases like work socks, athletic socks and so many others (including one made from blended merino wool and silk), and the second brand I believe could be said to be better than Darn Tough is J.B. Field’s originally established out of Tavistock Ontario in 1877, but now based in Toronto, all of their products are produced domestically in Canada with sustainable wool, they are the main contractor for the Canadian military’s socks and they produce some of the absolute best traditional wool socks I’ve ever owned, they also look really nice (in my opinion) with the traditional red and white striped cuff at the top harkening back to an aesthetic of early Canadiana and the lumberjacks and pioneers of old
Crazy this video popped up just 5 mins after I took off my boots and noticed that one of my first pairs of the steelie ones got a hole In the toe after a few years. I do think they are worth it. They really come back after laundry and tighten back up. No other socks do that for that long.
I will say that I've tried almost every sock you can get and although the Darn Tough have the lifetime warranty, without question the BEST socks I've ever used are the Red Wing Premium Safety and Premium Work socks! They're made for safety toes and have a higher merino wool content than my darn tough. Also the big thing for me is that they are the ONLY socks to actually keep my toes warm in the winter, Darn tough never could a big reason is the RW have a vented toe box so my feet breathe a lot better! They are still made in the USA and have a 1 year unconditional warranty, I know it's not a lifetime but they're the best Ive ever used after dropping over $300 on different brands. Give them a shot if you can, would love to hear your feedback!
Darntough is the go to brand for hikers and outdoors people that can afford it too and it has been for a long time. Im a student so I cant justify the purchase but I have never heard anyone complain about them.
Darn Tough, Smartwool, et al. are so long lasting that "down the road" they are actually less expensive than the "3 pair for $4,99" you get at Target or Walmart that run holes in the heels much too soon. Really! But, as a student, the whole high performance sock issue may not be as crucial as it is to outdoors workers, regular long distance hikers, etc. Of course, prices as they are with everything these days, one lovely pair of Smartwools isn't that much more than a meal at McDonald's 🙂
Just got 4 pairs of DT socks a few weeks ago and haven't worn my fleet of cotton Carhartt socks much since. Kinda feel bad for having so many pairs of random socks now.
Same here! I keep telling my wife that I'm just going to buy 12pr. of the same exact socks. Maybe I should have just kept all those for myself instead of giving them away....
I bought a pair of Darn Toughs back in February and I refuse to go back to anything else. My girlfriend even playfully roasted me for only ever wearing the few pairs I had at first. I bought a few more pairs today and even a pair for her to give on Tuesday so she can understand my situation and to introduce her to the best socks I've ever worn tbh.
Thanks Carl! Had a pair of DT years ago and at the time I found them to be too restrictive at the cuff. I’m trying a couple pairs now that I just got (Whetstone Crew Light) so hopefully I’ll get on better with these. One other thing that has kept me from fully embracing DT is that many of their socks don’t have a high enough percentage of wool for my tastes, I like at least 65% or so.
Fair enough. I've found that DTV (for me) is better than Smartwool or American Trench socks. I want to try more Fox River too, and someone mentioned Railroad brand?
Not to pick arguments with Carl here 🙂--- but I prefer Smartwool as they are just as high performing and long lasting as DT but not at all constricting around the calf nor as overall rigid as DT. I do have a couple DT and yes, they are rigid. Do give SW a try. Gee, I'm starting to sound like I work for SW... ha! Honest, I don't.
@@Leif-s9w SW has also proven to be overly snug in the cuff area as well. Mitigated by cutting them off, my 3 pairs of SW ended up lasting for years, so no issues with qc.
Also what’s crazy is, at one time in American history, the norm was quality clothing. That’s all we really had. We didn’t even know what china or Vietnam made garbage denim or socks were.
Darn Tough are too small for my wide feet and huge calves... cuts off my circulation..... but Vermont Darn Tough just came out with "Wide Open" socks... have 1 pair, has extreme stretch and great so far
Did you actually buy all medium size? Wondering because my boot size in right on the border between two Darn Tough sock sizes and I wasn't sure which size socks to get. But maybe it's not that important if you can hand out medium size to everyone? :D
For 15+ years, I have been machine washing them in cold water INSIDE OUT and drying them OUTSIDE OUT in a clothes dryer on medium heat. They can be a slightly tight when first putting them on, but no struggle to get them on. They stretch out in a minute or two. Which is better than loose and baggy trying to stuff that in a boot. I have never worn a Darn Tough Vermont sock out. I still wear the 15 year old ones along with the new ones in the rotation.
Darn Tough are great, but unfortunately don’t fit around my ankle/instep area the best and the material doesn’t stretch much at all. Can be a real paint to put on and not the most comfortable. Certainly last forever. I’ve been switching over to Point6 which have a similar warranty and are light years more comfortable
See I’ve got a few pairs of Darn Tough and they are so hot. I work as a roofer outside Houston TX and I feel like an idiot wearing wool in the summer. And my ankle sock version Darn Tough wear out around the pinky toe. And also they cause my foot to slip/slide in my boot. Maybe I got a few bad pairs?? I do like them in the winter, but they still cause my foot to slip/slide around in my boot.
I'd be interested in which pair you have and the sizing. I like these in the summer, but the lightweight versions. Fit is definitely key though man, make sure you've got that fit dialed in.
The biggest factor for me getting Darn Tough is that they offer sizes. "One size fits all" for sock sizing makes no sense. A size 8 can't wear a size 12 in shoes and the same goes for socks.
Think of what would happen if EVERY construction worker in America STOPPED buying work attire from over seas big box stores and started buying ONLY QUALITY USA work clothes.
What if i bought them from México, thru Amazon México? Already own 6 pairs, ando the first 2 (4 years) already starting fall apart. I'm concern about how do Darn Tough respond.

Got my first sets of Darn Tough socks issued to me while in the Army. Received 8 sets in 2004 and still have them to this day. Best socks ever
I got lucky and was issued them as well. Socks for life.
As a railroader I use to go thru socks 2 times a year. Bought Darn Tough Work Socks (Steely)5 years ago and wear them 2 days in a row(no smell), and yet to use the warranty for holes. And during winter I get my thermo Darn Tough Socks out same results.
Bought 10 of these last year after your recommendation and they still look good as new. They make the work day so much easier!
