I know this is an old video, but I wanted to share my results. I originally degreed my cams this way and then installed solid lifters to re-check. Both cams were only off by 2 degrees. So, doing it this way will definitely get you in the ballpark.
Ya. It isn’t perfect. But at least you have an idea what is going on. I’ve done it again out of the car and let the lifter bleed down and then find the top of that lobe and it worked pretty well to find degrees at max lift.

Do I need to buy a special tool. It looks like you have just drilled 2 holes in your degree wheel, with 2 bolts going into something?

Hey, sorry I missed this! I just used a couple of longer bolts for the crank pulley and bolted it through the degree wheel.
