Sat here for 5 minutes trying to describe C.D. in words, but there are no words to describe him. He described himself every time he got up on stage and played his music. My kids and grandchildren love his music as much as I do. He lives in our hearts and minds. Memories are wonderful things...RIP C.D.

Charlie Daniels ... a fine, fine gentleman. Charlie loved America and he was a strident loyal Patriot - I felt a kinship with him cause of that. There is no doubt that he would be hopping mad if he could see what's going on in our country right now (it is July 2022 as I write this.) Indeed; we lost a Golden Child when we lost Charlie Daniels far too soon.

I saw this performance live on TV. I think I was in 6th grade. I remember coming to school the next day. It was the hot topic around school. My teacher, Mrs Price, was even fired up! Steel mills closing, unemployment rampant, families that had been here for generations leaving to find work in southern cities, so it was pretty gloomy...except for those wonderful Sunday afternoons in the fall, when the Steel Curtain carved out a legacy as the greatest football team in NFL history. How the city hung their hopes on that franchise is really hard to explain, but looking back (and I don't want to over-dramatize the point, but it's true), the Steelers not only brought Lombardi Trophies to Pittsburgh, they brought them hope. Charlie Daniels captured that brilliantly in verse 2.
I was young when this came out but to put this song into perspective. Things weren't going so hot for America when Charlie Daniels wrote this song. Late 70's Post Vietnam was a sad time for America...I remember houses under construction were abandoned from inflation and high interest rates. 1979 was the year that Iran took all the American hostages and every night on the news, the first thing Dan Rather would say was "This is Day No. One/Two/Three Hundred of the Iran Hostage Crisis. The rescue mission was a disaster. This was also the year the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. But I'll say this...as a kid...never once did I think that the United States was down and out...and it was songs like this that reminded us that despite some chipped paint and broken boards, our House is strong and well built. I thank God that Ronald Reagan came along and let us know that our best years weren't behind but in front of us!
Things are somewhat similar with inflation, the fallout from 20 years of war, the feeling that we're in bad times and our enemies emboldened. A lot of the same ideas floating around then are still quite prevalent today. There are some differences though. In terms of standard of living, technology, communications, and equality, things are way better. However, in terms of demise of the family and TOXIC politics, things are worse.
