  • “This far from immaculate veteran is so many tons of whining, rattling, clanging, swaying, pure nostalgia” - Fyfe Robertson.
    Fyfe Robertson reports from Glasgow, where the city's iconic Coronation street trams are soon to be discontinued, as the motorbus age shunts aside the rickety old cars. Fyfe takes a sentimental last trip aboard the number 9 tram from Auchenshuggle to Dalmuir West - the sole remaining tram route in the city - and shares some affectionate memories from the tram's glorious heyday.

    The cities that got rid of trams made a terrible mistake. And the ones that kept them have reaped the benefits.

      Every single city (in the UK) back then scrapped the trams in favour of buses. What they thought was progress turned out to be a huge mistake. When I moved to Canada in the mid 70's, I was delighted to find that the tram cars in Toronto were never scrapped, and to this day still provide a vital service.

      @@comedywriter8408 The Standard Oil Company of America bought one American Cities Tramway and shut it down overnight,making loans from the Company for buses and fuel available to the city. It would not surprise me if similar scams were not going on in the Uk. The railways,shiping,shipbuilding,and ship repair as well as other Uk industries were being sent abroad or destroyed st the time. I grew up with it,from childhood, to being a man in my mid thirties. In my forties,the Glasgow I knew was long gone.

    For me the nostalgia is not the tramcar, but the relaxed, measured delivery of Fyfe Robertson's most personal commentary. A style sadly not heard in any longer in this age of 'sound-bites'.

    Many of those Glasgow trams actually ended up in Hong Kong and are still in service to this day!
    Pre-1997, many British bus companies sent their old buses to HK, KL and Singapore.

    • @johncox2284
      @johncox2284 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None of the Glasgow trams went to Hong Kong. The trams running in Hong Kong were built there.
      Many of the trams from Glasgow did end up in museums in the UK like the National Tramway Museum in Crich. A couple even went over to the USA to the Seashore Trolley Museum.

    • @swanvictor887
      @swanvictor887 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johncox2284 I'm not sure about that, John. I've ridden on those HK trams and there are identifying labels on the bodywork identifying the bodybuilder and chassis maker. Yes, like the Buses, many were 're-bodied' and fitted with a local-style body over the original chassis, but a lot of them were pretty much as they looked in Glasgow, just a lot cleaner lol.
      I will, however, dig into this a bit as I am a big Bus fan, but not really into trams as such. I know there are many, many books and videos about the HK trams available.
      I will get back to you.
