- The pilot of Emiliano Sala's plane told friends the aircraft was "dodgy" before the flight that killed the Argentine footballer.
Pilot David Ibbotson is heard in audio saying "I'll be wearing my life jacket" on the journey from France to Wales.
He also revealed the technical difficulties he had experienced with the 35-year-old Piper Malibu plane.
The plane crashed into the English Channel in 2019, killing them both.

One skilled professional Pilot, one intelligent passenger, both expressing anxiety that the plane was not air-worthy. I believe they each felt the pressure of the other to continue with the flight.
He wasn’t a professional pilot, he could not even fly at night.
Professional pilot? He didn't have a licence to carry commercial passengers, and flew a plane he knew wasn't 100%. The buck stops with him, same as it does with a driver in a vehicle. That isn't what i would call professional behaviour.
I don't know the cause of the crash, however, in this video, it was stated the pilot shouldn't have taken the job, because he "wasn't a commercial pilot and couldn't legally fly at night."
This is a tragedy of errors.
The pilot who wasn't legally up to the job but who clearly expressed the plane wasn't in good condition and the young passenger who knew it wasn't a safe plane.
How sad these two men didn't trust their instincts. Both now gone forever.

That’s sad..especially since they were both worried about the condition of the plane.
But failed to communicate their concerns to each other. Men tend to take unnecessary risks too. No female would board that shack of a plane.
the passenger is excused. he probably didn't want to make a scene and put his trust in the pilot and the ones responsible for chartering this plane. the pilot on the other hand cannot be excused so easily. what were his reasons for going ahead with a plane he very clearly identified as being a major risk to his life, let alone his responsibility for the passenger? why didn't he refuse to fly that thing?

He wasn’t qualified to fly for money, he didn’t have a commercial license. He also had no night rating, meaning he’s not qualified to fly at night. He broke every rule in the book basically, shocking behaviour from a pilot who knows fine well how regulated aviation is. You need licenses for flying for money, and an extra license for flying at night. He recklessly and egregiously put Sala’s life in grave danger and the lives of others under the flight path he decided to take in an unsafe plane and without correct pilot licensing. Shocking behaviour and it’s lucky he died, as he’d have been destroyed in court had he lived. Shame he called himself a pilot. Shocking
Yes but at the same time it's a lesson to be learned if you do not feel safe and/ or the plane feels unsafe its better to refuse then to crash.
@@eliciaeldridge3452 as I said in the opening comment: this only works if you can afford this attitude. he was a transfer player, people who decide his financial success chartered a plane for him, just for him, complete with pilot and all. it's not that easy refusing to board, make a fuss and risk his future career just on a gut feeling
Only proves how much safer it is to fly commercial. Private plane services aren’t regulated as well as commercial flights are.
What makes this tragedy much worse is that it could have been avoided if both had just said I'm not going to board the plane again as I don't feel safe this story just so heartbreaking 💔
Moral of the story is if your gut is telling you something is not right then listen to it.
Oh man this is heartbreaking. My man had an awesome life ahead of him. I’m going through pilot school, and the first you learn: don’t get on an airplane if you think something might be off. If in doubt. Don’t.

If the pilot had concerns, he shouldn’t have been joking about it, he should have straight up refused to fly that plane and explained to his passenger why he was refusing and that it is for safety reasons. It’s not the passenger’s responsibility to check or ensure a plane’s safety. Tragic incident but if he knew the plane was ‘dodgy’ he shouldn’t have agreed to fly his passenger in it.
I think men have a natural inclination to take on unnecessary risk despite the red flags pointing to a catastrophe. This pilot didnt take the obvious red flags seriously hence his joking about having a life jacket.
It is super sad and crazy.

Aye. I think people sometimes forget how easily a life can be lost and how advisable it there is to be careful, especially about something like this.
I overslept on the day of the London bombings in 2005 was due to fly later that day too. What is strange is that I love travelling so should have heard alarm but didn’t and as a result couldn’t get to Oxford Circus for my half day of work all public transport cancelled.

I never understood why you wouldn't just fly in a commercial carrier? What was the need to go so quickly in a small plane?
As a student pilot currently in academy, the first chapter they had you read in lesson 1 was that no flight should be taken under any circumstance if aircraft or pilot ability are in question. The external pressures are the leading cause of accidents, and a pilot needs to have a strong enough personality to say no to a flight when it’s not safe for passengers or crew, even if it’s high profile.
You're living in a bubble and never experienced commercial pressures in aviation. Yes it's one thing to say no to a flight. Another if you've got kids to feed. Enjoy the "academy".

He was offered a commercial flight I believe via Amsterdam but it would have meant less time in Nantes so the agent who set up the transfer organised the flight

One of my best friends from HS went missing in a small plane crash off the coast of Molokai. He had gotten his pilots license, took a day trip over from Oahu then the weather deteriorated when they were getting ready to fly back that evening. He didn't wanna stay over night so he ended up taking off back to Oahu against his better judgment. That one decision lost him his life. His plane went down and him and his 2 passengers were never seen again. I heard about it on the news the next morning, this was back in 2016

David should not be entirely blamed for this. Often companies and those in charge want employees to use equipment they know should not be in use, but they’ll want you to use it until the wheels fall off. Rest in peace to both of them.
Why not?He knew he’s not a commercial pilot and he knew he was not legally allowed to fly during night time. Also had doubts of the plane before even taking off, how’s it not all his fault?

Looks like of those scenarios where whoever was in charge of the travel arrangements, wanted to do it on the cheap. There are just certain things in life you just cannot do on a budget.

There should be somewhere that customers and piolets can report their concern for a plains condition.
The air port who leased the plain out to the piolet should be held accountable
Airports don’t lease planes. Pilot’s responsibility to check the aircraft is airworthy and safe for the flight. This guy did neither and clearly admitted the plane was unsafe in his opinion. He broke the law also by flying commercially without a commercial license nor a night rating. Shocking, shocking behaviour and the fault of this crash lies at the pilot’s feet and only at him. He caused it.
@@christophermclaughlin5650 air ports absolutely do lease planes and it is the job of the air port who leased it to check and keep their planes in flyable condition; the one near my town has leased a plane to a local skydiving company before, they don't own the plane they only rent it when they get clients.
I've even talked with an ex military pilot who rented a plane from a new York air port to take his family on vacation in Florida, we just so happened to stay at the same hotel on my vacation and talked about it at the pool.
Yes the pilot shouldn't have taken the plane but the air port never should have gave them it either, and if this man didn't have a commercial licence to fly the plane then the air port is also at fault for not checking to see if this guy had the proper documents to fly.

@@ahmadcampbossATC can’t possibly regulate every flight crew’s licensing, that’s not their job. In general aviation, it mostly falls to pilots to self regulate their licenses and ensure they are current and qualified for the type of flight they are undertaking. It’s never Air traffic control’s job to check their have the right license. They control traffic, not flight crew. It’s the job of the airline . It’s not the airport authority or airport owner who leased the plane , it’s a particular FBO company. Yes it’s wrong they leased it, but the final responsibility is the pilot’s for the safety of the flight. No one else.

FYI, for those who asked why he didn’t fly on commercial flight, there are no commercial flights either directly or through London to Cardiff from Nantes. Only option would be with 2 stops, including PARIS and Amsterdam. The entire trip would have taken him at least 10-12 hours, including getting to and from plus in and out of airports…
He would have been better off taking a train or hiring a car with driver…
No excuse for dodgy plane with questionable pilot.
What I cannot fathom is why either of them accepted to fly on this plane… I’ve been on small, private planes before and my friend assured me of safety record for the plane he was piloting…

In one hand there is a very young footballer ,full of natural anxiety and excitement about a massive transition in his life,getting ready for a new phase in his careeer,full off thoughts regarding the new club,teammates,naturally assuming he has been placed in safe hands by his future team and would be flown by no one but a true professional.On the other hand there is an experienced,middle-aged professional pilot,who had to be fully aware of his own competence level and limits.He knew because he had to ,what he was doing.The comparison is unfair.Emilio stood no chance in this set-up.He had no choice but trust the pilot as we all would have.Most of us would not have questioned the competence of David.It is only the pilot,who had the competence and qualification to assess the situation and admit/accept ,he was not trained to fly the plane especially not at night.I cannot fathom what he was thinking and how he could undertake such risk.He disregarded the fundamental principle of flying by risking not only his life but that of a completely innocent individual’s as well.Probably it was his pride.In addition they had already been on board when Emilio’s message was recorded,by that time it was too late.

However, I have learned over the years that it is not always wise to trust someone who appears to be in authority, particularly when ur life is at risk. This applies extensively to the advise from healthcare professionals… I know of many cases where a Dr’s prognosis was incorrect. They are only human after all.
I was reminded of this recently when I missed a bus because a police officer sent me in the wrong direction. The next bus left 8 hours later, at midnight and I would have spent 5 hours on the bus, arriving in my home town at 5am, when Publix transportation is no longer running. As a result, I ended up spending nearly €100 for a crappy hotel…

When you are worth 20 million pounds, I ain't stepping in the unworthy plane. Get yourself a Bentley,Mercedes, and a driver or take alternate routes with the best class.
Unless the pilot has his own plane and the funds to maintain it well, the responsibility lies also on those who supplied the craft. Putting it all on him is scapegoating, which will get in the way of correcting all aspects of the problem, and lead to more death.

What pilot takes to the sky in an aircraft that they recognize is less than perfect?
A pilot who wants to keep his income. A lot of pilots are tired, has had their salary cut down and so on. Its just the same in the “budget” holliday industry. Pilots have been warning about it for years. Covid made it even worse.

I'm just wondering how the Pilot even got the job when he never even held a commercial license. Like how did he even end up in the pool of potential pilots to hire of the company that organized the flight. I'm guessing that it wasn't the first time flying commercially and just no one ever was bothered to check wether the flights he was doing were legit.
The pilot had two prior CAA flying violations. The CAA did not investigate those violations properly. If they had, they would have discovered the pilot was not qualified or proficient.

When passenger complains about the airplane condition, and if he is not aviation enthusiastic, that's really raise alarm bell up the ying yang, since normal people will just trust the pilot.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a huge threat. People blame the pilot for the break up in air but he was likely unconscious.

How a man who isn’t legally allowed to fly the plane managed to get a job like that or even get into the airport is beyond me in this day and age. RIP to both. Very sad loss and it’s awful to hear Emiliano felt this way but still continued. Trust your gut.

Very mild comparison. I am a truck driver and used to be a London bus driver. If my vehicle was not 100% up to par, and we're talking even if one of the bells on the bus didn't function, for risk of a passenger having to over-maneuver themselves to reach it whilst in transit, risking injury, the bus would not leave the depot. As the assigned operator I am obligated to provide my passengers safe transportation.The pilot was obligated to refuse flight, after assessing the current log book or I'm assuming, his detailed inspection (not just a visual one I hope.) One man, the world should've known for kicking a ball is now known for kicking the bucket. 20 million, talented and gorgeous to boot, I would have rolled him up in cotton wool and cradled him on a train before "I" made the choice as to whether he lived or died!

Its funny and sad, but situations like these happen more often than you would expect; people see a bad situation unfold but due to outside influences/pressure they choose to continue anyway and then often result in accidents...

A sad tale for sure, but why was the pilots buddy recording the call? Or was this recorded without either of them knowing, and now it gets released as though it’s normal to record calls in general?

Pilot never should have made a 2 hour night flight in bad weather, over ocean, in a single engine, especially being colorblind but why a premier league club had to put that poor random guy in that position… they couldn’t just book sala a flight and some Ubers???

Wow, I'm already terrified of flying on planes as it is... then I watch something like this? I don't think I ever will fly on a plane in this lifetime. Some ppl tell me to never let fear hold you back, but I think it's just my gut instinct forewarning me that something will go horribly wrong and I will have no control over my own fate.
If a dodgy pilot thinks the PLANE is dodgy, probably should have paid attention.
