    The pilot and owner of the plane is Harrison's good friend. Harrison has flown in this exact plane for over 7 years. Most of those times Harrison sat in the right seat. Over that period of time he learned and observed a lot about how this plane operates. Although Harrison is not a licensed pilot he is far from being a novice.

      This comment should be pinned at the top. The news acted as if this man knew nothing of flying whatsoever. His glide slope was perfect on landing - it's obvious he understood the basics of flight and had probably flown the plane himself on many occasions in the past while in the air.

    I’ve had this happen to myself. I did grow up around aviation and my father is a pilot and I now have a pilots license but when I was 15 I was riding with an older man that was a family friend and he had a heart attack while we were flying. We called a mayday and I talked to the local atc and told them what was going on. I was able to land the airplane which was a Cessna 172. I will never forget that

      Interesting how you give the passenger credit for acknowledging the passenger's religous superstition about who helped him but you both leave out the instructor that actually made it happen. Do you think your god made the pilot lose consciousness too or just didn't notice the situation until near disaster? Maybe it was naptime? I guess all that stuff about free will, reaction etc is just bs and we are actually but toys in some plan we aren't privy to. If the Big Cheese pulled off the landing what's the big deal anyway? There have been people lost at sea or in the woods who manage to survive using common sense. He appears to be a bit of risk taker and just listening to him speak he has an innate ability to remain calm. You'd be surprised how just staying calm can save your life and others.

    He had previous experience/flight knowledge. He had knowledge of airspeed and it’s ability to cause structural damage. He knew that he had to recover it slowly or the aircraft could stall. He told ATC he could maintain 5,000- for someone with no piloting experience, knowing what this meant would not be intuitive. The brakes on an aircraft are not intuitive either. He had full knowledge of how to slow down the aircraft by brining back the throttle all the way..In the aviation community we all know he had prior experience/flight knowledge. Good job sir!

      - How an aircraft stalls and the resulting complications (Airspeed indicator)
      - Understood all of the instruments and their function ( I.e. maintain 5,000) using altimeter.
      * It does not say 5,000 on the instrument
      - He was asked to squawk 7700 using his transponder. He did so in 3 seconds. No one without knowledge would even remotely know what that would mean.
      - Without being asked, he tells the controller he’s descending at 550/min, then updates them of descent of 200 ft/min.

    • @iainbagnall4825
      @iainbagnall4825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yes, very much the opposite, which is a good thing. He was making a quite shallow descent, clearly they guided him to the longest runway they could clear, and apparently was still too fast at 200ft which is practically on the runway. You see him touching down at what looks like about 1/3 -1/2 way down the runway, so its not like he "put it on the numbers", but also, I would not remotely have wanted to pressure him to do so, seeing as they deliberately made sure he'd have lots of runway to work with.
      Also, the bare feet thing probably worked to his advantage - he got more feel for the rudder that way, and a more gentle application of brakes which is also a good thing. Dont want to be standing on those brakes when you touch down - that's a thing at flying clubs actually, walkign around the rental plane and if you see flat spots on the tires you know someone landed with their feet on the brakes and just incurred a bill to replace the rubber lol.
      A carrier landing is so specialised and specific... its a very high descent rate, very specific approach, you land at full power with full flaps and full airbrakes and have to put it on a postage-stamp sized square of deck (well not quite, but not far off)
