Hey, sorry for being late to the review. Glad you like what we did and thanks for the honest review. If you are coming from a different pack layout I can relate to your confusion regarding the side access. And it seems polarizing more than we thought :-) Because actually we already used the exact same layout for our Monolith Daypack 22 in 2012 and people liked it a lot - we liked it a lot as well. The idea behind it is, that whenever you put your pack on the ground, chair, or lap... to get your laptop out, it's easier to use it in landscape mode. The opening is bigger, the pack needs less height and it's easier to reach things at the bottom of your pack - Because you probably not only need your laptop we made the side access opening the main compartment as well. This is also the reason why the flat pockets are oriented sideways. That said you need to get used to rotating your pack sideways to get your laptop out - it's not working as nice when the pack is upright. Most people from the team say that they only use the main opening when they load and unload bulky stuff at the gym or grocery store. For EDC tasks at and on the way to work/play, they often use the side access only. I hope this helps you understand our decision. I always appreciate a good chat about details :-) Keep up the good work, Moritz

Hey Moritz, thank you so much for that thoughtful explanation. It makes total sense when explained that way. Unfortunately, I’d never had the chance at using a Monolith; it’s possible my opinion would have been different having experience with that sort of orientation. Sometimes, we settle on the ways we use things, and have to actively think about expanding our perceptions.
I still contend that the Transit travel bags are some of the best on the market, and I use a Motion Arc whenever I’m doing something active or outdoorsy - I love that bag.
I am a big fan of Heimplanet. Say hi to Stefan for me.

The CPL has an isolated compartment. I think if you lay the bag horizontally, it would upgrade your experience. I know that's a feature I love about my CPL. I don't ever carry it in brief mode, but I love working out of it in brief mode when I'm at the office, coffeeshop, etc. I've never really done that with a backpack until I got the CPL. Sometimes, I think a secret of getting the most out of these different bags is using them as they're intended/as they're designed - rather than how we want to use them. It might seem contradictory to some people's theories of design, but just my opinion :)

That’s a valid opinion. For, me each bag has nuisances that force me to change a little. The way I pack my Apex is different to how I pack my Bannoch, is different to how I pack my GR1. With my job and how I flow through life, working the bag sideways was a hassle. Still, you bring up a great point, people who can use the bag sideways may absolutely love this pack.

Sticking with my initial thoughts, which were aligned your review, the sideways arrangement is weird without a way to at least stow the backpack straps. I’d like to own a Heimplanet one day, but it won’t be this one. Thanks for putting this together.
