    Just found your channel. Love cattle and especially Angus and Angus bulls. Grew up with an Angus herd in central Illinois.
    Of course our farm was on a much smaller scale then your ranch but the same on loving this life style. We also had 3,000 layer hens. Lots of egg gathering. I remember helping to pull several calves in my day.
    Thanks for sharing and showing your love for your cattle.

    Back in the old days grandpa use to take a mother and calf and put them in a smaller pasture or fenced in pen to keep mom with calf so she learned not to leave her calf behind . It usually only took two weeks to get her to straighten out and not leave calf be hind but then too they were dairy cows I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.

    Question from a total city slicker: these days are there no "tags" available with chips, to locate the new calves? Seems it would be helpful for ranchers. Blessings this Easter.

    • @wally626v_m7
      @wally626v_m7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are RF tags that can be used while working the animals, a long range tracker would probably not be cheap light or small enough. Sandi Brook uses them on her sheep.

    • @niveusnimbus
      @niveusnimbus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are GPS trackers for bees; not commercially available mind. But you can get GPS tags for cats and dogs. Very small and weather proof. But would run the costs for a whole herd of cows and calves.

    • @wesnr101
      @wesnr101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding from the GPS collars you see on dogs and cats is that they have to be charged fairly frequently. With 100 ish cow calf pairs I can see that becoming pretty unwieldy.

    If she's a first year mom then you have to worry a little. But otherwise some cows purposely stay away from their calves to keep the calf hidden and laying down. The cow looks young so I'm guessing she's first year.

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. She’s 4. Thanks

    • @GrantTravels23
      @GrantTravels23 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dang I would sort her off then as soon as the calf can walk it after this storm. Sometimes they favor the newer calves, sometimes their milk bag gets sore and they try to feed everyone else's calves and can accidentally neglect their own calf. She may even just want out of the pasture since she's been through the process and you sort them off every year she might know she has done her part and popped it out and now she is trying to pick up any calf to get moved on away from the herd. Any which way I suggest pairing them up and sorting them off after the storm. She will keep a better eye on her own calf after she's away from the new ones.

    • @movermike2216
      @movermike2216 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has nothing to do with being scatterbrained, it's instinct like the cow eating the afterbirth. deer do the exact same thing with their fawns they hide them and leave them and come back for feedings, the mother can defend itself against a predator and the baby cannot. these animals are much smarter than you give them credit for.

    • @MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead
      @MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@movermike2216 I am giving her plenty of credit, but having been around a lot of cattle in my life and working with them, that cow is particularly inattentive. Most will intuitively move their calves into the nursery situation of having a matriarch cow or a young cow without calf and that cow watches over a group of youngsters for a period of time. That cow is pretty wild in comparison with your others and her attempts at caution could have the reverse effect like a coyote attack. Having watched her behavior over your past videos, I would have separated her and moved her and the calf into a stall or pen. Lessens the likelihood of calf loss.

    Man how much gas do you go through in the gator in a calf-Ing month? my guess is a lot

    • @OurWyomingLife
      @OurWyomingLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, quite a bit. But its just the cost of calve'n and the most efficient way to take care of business. Happy Easter to ya, and thanks for tagging along.

      Our Wyoming Life definitely the most efficient I wouldn’t want to imagine riding a horse or worse walking all those miles in the cold 🤷‍♂️

      He really has no choice. The "smaller" pasture he closes them into is about 100 acres. The larger one where they are now is around 400 acres. Do you have any idea how long it takes to walk around 400 acres?? I'm guessing even at a very brisk walk it would take at least 5 hours just to walk the perimeter.

    Why not band the bulls when you tag them?forget that stupid question ... it's probably safer at vaccination time in a cattle chute right ? Thinking dairy cow again...

    Terrific content. I drive a truck for a living. I see cattle every day. They are almost my traveling companions. My favorite part of the day is to see cattle take care of each other, it’s evident. Or when calves jump up and down like children. What great animals

    Quick question... have you stepped in and had to actually pull calves in the case of failed labor?

    We’ve had -14 Celsius the last few mornings here, a bit of wind, making much worse. Fortunately the cows that have calved here are good Mamas and have kept the calves comfortable too. I have put lots of bedding out there and that helps keep everyone off the cold frozen ground. Still have couple feet of snow here also.

      I'm in Florida so the very concept of a couple of feet of snow right now just hurts me!

      Yes I am thankful for the gator and luxury it provides. It’s still expensive and I’m not going to apologize for it.

    That partner cracked me up! Just as I was thinking how silly I was to leave my window down to find 3” of snow in my front seat. And I knew better! That hard work will keep us all young. Though our hearts go out to these calves, there is a reason they are born at the time they are. You really showed one of the he concerns ranchers go through just to keep going to supply us all with food. Mike and Erin I hope you have and your family have a very Blessed Easter

    Nice to see your renting your farmhouse to nurse who's working at Campbell County Hospital. I was there quite a few times when I lived there. Exceptional hospital. Had Dr. Sara Hartsaw as my surgeon for my breast cancer. Could not have had better care anywhere in the world. Love the care you give to your cows and calves. Ranching is the hardest job you'll ever love. I miss my Wyoming life.

    Great day, but no Faith? If she's ok, would it help to put the mom and her in a smaller area so she can't get lost again? Bad mana...no cake! That leaves me stressed and I'm 900 miles away. I can only imagine what that's like for you and your family.
    Please, please minimize contact with the people who are renting. This virus is to he feared and greatly respected. Ok...so we worry too much, but we truly care a lot.
