    Hey Mike some people don't understand the butchering process my grandparents were farmers so I understand but someone has to raise pigs, steers, goats, and so on for people to eat this has gone on for thousands of years it's the circle of life and not to offend anyone but something has to die so others can live people have to eat 🐖🥓😋 bacon makes everything taste better no calves for Erin so what's next for our Wyoming life keep up the good work and see you in the next video 🤔🤠🥓🥚😋😃😉

    Dad always raised irrigated crops on 600 Acres in Eastern Washington in the 50's and 60's and 70's. Along with that came 200 head of registered Black Angus cow and calf crops and he always raised 25 head of hogs for slaughter. Brings back good memories. I'm 69 and retired in upstate NY. The public would really freakout if food was scarce. Too many people just think food will alway be there in the stores waiting for them. They really are too stupid to understand the supply and demand of goods scenario that society goes thru 24/7...365 days a year.
      I bet in the future you will be watching calfing via drones while you are in your recliner drinking coffee...nice video.

    Taking animals to the butcher so they can be processed into food is not essential travel? What planet do those folks live on? Probably the same planet where meat is made in grocery stores.

    • @MrTechFreaks
      @MrTechFreaks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ha! Short Story: I raise yaks (for meat) in Minnesota. During one tour with a group from San Francisco one lady was absolutely certain that her meat came from the back of the grocery store and not a farm. She was totally serious and a bit confused that meat came from a farm. It was crazy!

    • @0xFF48
      @0xFF48 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say while getting livestock to a processor is essential, and the decision to accept the risks-benefit on taking them now vs a month from now is something only the farmer can do.
      Staying on the ranch is safer, but then the livestock are not making money for the ranch, and cost money in terms of extra feed.

    I am glad there are people like you left in the world increasing dominated by "factory farming". Those pigs live a great life until that one day. They are free to walk around and play, not confined indoors. The same for the few steers you raise for slaughter. If your viewers want to see contrast, drive by any feedlot. And unlike you, I am bashing the factory farmers. The commercialisation of farming has not led to a better society. In many cases it has bankrupted family farms. Yes, it has made meat "cheap" but at a great cost to the lives of animals and humans.

    So the processing place will slaughter and process them? They do that with your cattle and chickens too? I figured you would have to put them down first then bring them in.

    The pigs you raise have a much better life than one raised in a commercial hog operation. I hunt and fish so I know what it is all about. Everyone thinks it is made in a machine in the back of a Grocery store. They all need to visit a kill floor in a factory that kills most any animal. This is why it bothers me when someone says I want eat a Deer but we both know the deer had it a lot better than a factory farm animal. It is the circle of life. We understand it but most city dwellers don’t.

    Most of the time I'm sure it's tough to see these animals go. But...when you have a pig that is an escape artist or bullies the other pigs, maybe even scares your kids so bad they won't help with the chores. Well the silver lining there is....one day you can eat them and they will be delicious!

    I love how you treat the animals. They live the best life. They are raised for a purpose. We raise chickens, they have an awesome life..... free range eating all the bugs and loving the sunshine. In the fall we butcher the boys. I know how they lived, I know how they died.

    Is there a formula where you have to judge when to take the hogs to slaughter? When they are at optimal weight versus feed input? Or if waiting to allow for pork prices to rise, versus more feed and weight gain. Or does this not make much difference since it lower numbers of hogs versus commercial hog farms. They look like heirloom breeds so does this mean famers market and higher meat prices?

    I'm happy to know that there are producers like you. I'm quite fond of eating meat, I know where it comes from, and appreciate it.
    I hope you can get through these difficult times and are able to grow the herd back to size.

    You do care for your animals. No doubt. I've never raised and cared for an animal for slaughter. I love bacon, ham, ribs, steak the whole thing. Its so hard though to see their sweet little personalities and how they express curiosity and affection. Its something I know must be done. But I wouldn't be strong enough. Thank you for being strong enough. I wish all meat for slaughter was raised with as much love and care you give. My mom slaughtered animals for meat on the farm she grew up on. Now, she really doesn't like animals. Me, my life would be empty without them. I wonder if my mom as a child having to kill the chicken or cow she raised divorced herself from her feelings for them. I wonder if it was a bitter lesson for her as a child as it was life and death for her family being so poor in the 40s. She is the most loving, gentle and kindest woman in the world but don't get close to her with an animal. I sincerely appreciate what you do. I know it breaks your heart. What strange and conflicted beings we are. But, we do our best.

    Those naysayers don't seem to realize that driving your livestock is part of your job. It's called work, and food is a basic requirement of life.
    I for one, am grateful for you going out there and possibly exposing yourself, so that you and others can have a meal.
    Your hat's on straight good buddy! CHEERS!

    Runt is the official farm mascot. Thank you for sparing him, Mike. He will attract soft hearted kids and families that vacation on your homestead. Photos shall be taken as souvenirs. Maybe to go over him with a pressure washer on low, would be an idea.....Ranch Roundup time(?)

    Keep little piggy for pet lol.. to the other question.... We depend on the farmers in the Fields and ranchers that take to slaughter.. I may have a tender heart and could never be the one who deliveres them to slaughter.. but those pigs are going to keep a family from going hungry

    You all have so much land how come you don’t grow your own hay and bail it for the winter? I know it’s cheap operation that they grow their own grain and hay and then they sell the extra but that way they cut down dramatically on fee cost

    I still remember my first 4h project and how difficult it was getting rid of him, he was a registered hereford bull so I knew he wasn't going to slaughter, but still the sale and seperation was difficult, but a learning experience for me and my family, the next 10+ years had us raising and selling many finished steers, some we consumed ourselves, never easy but we knew they had the best life possible for them, the best feed, fresh water and dailey contact exercising them and preparing them for the showring, later in years i was a 4h beef project leader, so at fair time had this same emotional ride with all my kids, and once prepared for the end of the project the kids understood how it was to be, often with tears from myself and kids in the club
