As a kid I was lucky enough to see this series in syndicated U.S. release on television. This was also the first time as a child I witnessed the concept of self sacrifice for a greater good. It hit hard. And even now today 40 + years later it still gets me in the feels. Like a gods damned hammer.

I’m really surprised someone like Tarantino hasn’t made this into a movie, outside the bad guys doing the Nazi Salute I think it would do pretty well at the box office.

In the West, the show was broadcasted very frequently throughout the 1970s and 1980s. And, yes, the ending shattered the hearts of at least two generations of young audiences across two hemispheres of the globe 😢.

Today is my 57th birthday. And just like the first time I saw this, some time during the early 1970's, I cry. I cry, because Giant Robot is my friend. Has been since I was that child. When a friend dies, it hurts. So, I hurt.
I salute you, Giant Robot! You showed what the greatest heroes do, when there is only one way to stop the evil.

I loved this show in the 70's. I cried harder the day I saw this than at any other time I could remember. But it did serve a purpose that was positive. After this, I always knew the good guy might die. Had this not happened, I would have always known in the back of my mind that the ending would be happy. So there would be less suspense. Incredible ending.

I ran home from school to watch this show every day. I absolutely loved it in 1969 as a 6 yr old. This final episode was the first time I cried watching a show. At 60 I still mist up partly from the nostalgia of youth and the innocence of that time. I would think this could be Spielberged into a great movie. But he would hopefully keep Giant robots appearence the same but with modern effects and keep the heart of the original. Hey, they did transformers.

The grandson of Johnny finds the watch in an attic or basement in one of his grandfathers storage chests. After hearing stories of his grandfathers adventures with Giant Robot, he ponders trying it out, but is skeptical. But before he does, a new monster appears ready to destroy anything in its path. The military can’t destroy it. All hope is lost. In an act of desperation, the grandson of Johnny Sokko pleas into the watch for Giant Robot. And, out of the sky, the legendary Robot flys in to save the world. A new era of Giant Robot begins.......

I used to cry at the end when I was a kid and it still makes me sniffle and feel bad for the robot and the kid. I just did a little research and never realized the movie I'm familiar with "Voyage Into Space" is actually a subset of this series that I never watched. Thanks for sharing.

They should make a new remake of Giant Robot with more powers and weapons fully at his disposal to save the earth once again:)!

With Ultraman, he goes back to his planet after his blinker is destroyed. Here Giant Robot inspires the Iron Giant movie.

I have seen this episode on TV back in 1968. Very sad ending; good guy perished with the bad guy. I later found out quite a few people cried at this scene. Also the drama producer of this show...

Robot was our friend and in many ways, our hero. He taught us the meaning of sacrifice and duty. He showed us that in the light of defeatism to never give up and to never lose hope. Funny how this one show showed us all what a real friend is. John 15:13 tells us that " No Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man would lay down his life for his friends..." Robot became more of a human being than we ever could that sad day and even 53 years later still inspires us to a higher calling to.be better to one another post this Covid pandemic. In closing....Thank You Giant Robot. We the fans mourn you still but are proud of what you stood for. All of us Unicorns Teams AROUND THE WORLD salute you!!!! LONG LIVE GIANT ROBOT!!!!

This is like if the Toy Story 3 cast actually had died in the trash compactor scene! There was no happy ending here! And it was terrible to 7 year old version of myself! Giant Robot was my favorite superhero at that age! But still the best! They should remake it! With the modern CGI, it would be awesome!!

I used to think that machinery is the answer to all of our problems, but then I thought of machinery invented new problems, devastating problems, during the season finale giant robot saved us all, he was the perfect balance between us and machinery, he taught us that life needs a balance, machinery can improve our lives but so can people, if we focus on one expense of the other that’s when the balance is lost, our world will find its way again this time with giant robot as our compass

This is genuinely more heart wrenching than Ironman or recent Bond "deaths" by creating a genuine lump in the throat. Also was "predator or yajuta" inspired by "Guillotene"?

Yup, I’m 53 years old and this STILL sucks to watch a favorite character die.
No closure or childhood loss of something endearing.
    Who can say, but
maybe some day (when Johnny desperately needs him again) Giant Robot will be rebooted and come back out of the sky. 🫣
