      That’s how I think of the Barracuda as well. In my version of events, Redbeard is infamous for being the only pirate to ever capture a warship from the Royal Navy.

    • @Ayden_77
      @Ayden_77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamiethedinosaur869 I think of them both being built by Redbeard and his crew, in my version of the story Redbeard is infamous for being the greatest pirate on the seas and the most skilled sword fighter in the the world, all the imperials are allied together to defeat him but are still afraid to go after him, and the Black Seas Barracuda is referred to as "the unsinkable" by the imperials as they have failed to destroy it time and time again.

    The Skulls Eye Schooner seems to be a galleon of some sort. It isn’t a schooner (by technical means) but it is a good set piece. The Black Seas Barracuda is what I assume to be a frigate or brig.

    • @F1stzz
      @F1stzz ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree on the brig, absolutely 👌🏻

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Black Seas Barracuda is two-masted so it's definitely a brig. Frigates were generally full-rigged ships with three masts, at least until they started running steam paddles.
      The Skull's Eye Schooner would technically be considered a Barque, particularly a three-masted Barque. It's got three masts, of which the foremast and mainmast are square rigged and the mizzen is fore-and-aft. It wouldn't be a galleon as that's a very specific hull design that doesn't really match the Skull's Eye's design. If anything, the large and ornate rear cabin suggests that the design was inspired by the earlier Zabra or Carrack.

    Excellent review as always. Really enjoyed it. Never had this as a kid, but built and sold one a while back. For me, the BSB just edges it but this is still a classic. The rare minfig is called 'Brown Shirt Steve' by enthusiasts and his torso isn't the only unique thing about him - his headpiece is also unique. It's the only one that came in that bright red colour, not the common reddish brown one found in many figs. Buyers and sellers often don't notice the difference but it's something to look out for if buying a used set. Looking forward to your next retrospective...

    Best review of this set I've seen. (As I can say with every TrikBrix' video). I also prefer the SES above the BSB. An enhanced build throughout, except for the captain's quarters. Like I said before Jamie, if I personally had to choose ONE of either the Black Seas Barracuda or the Skull's Eye Schooner I'd go for the Barracuda. I agree the Schooner's black sails make it look more menacing like a pirate ship should be. And the functioning rudder is also pretty cool and the ultra-rare pirate minifig as well. But I feel the Barracuda's colour scheme "pops" out more, it's not as expensive as the Schooner and the Schooner's captain's cabin is lackluster to say the least. But I agree it's a win-win situation with both ships and seeing them side-by-side is a sight I never get tired of!

    • @TrikBrix
      @TrikBrix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can’t argue with you - when I got the BSB it instantly became my favorite set, but then I got the SES, and I couldn’t decide... lol. Finally, I think the SES won out based on size and darker color scheme. But the BSB is still a favorite of mine, and I wouldn’t be content with my collection if I didn’t have it. I guess you just gotta get them both! Lol.
      Thanks again for watching! 😎👍

    • @Tim.Hammer

      There's just too much going on both shape-wise and color-wise in the Skull's Eye Schooner. Black and white sails, red and green trim, then random blue lanterns. What's the color scheme supposed to be? Additionally, the shapes on the back half of the ship and around the outside of the cabin are all over the place, and the inside of the cabin is completely ruined with the steering mechanism. The Barracuda is both simple and grand, without getting needlessly carried away. Sure, the Schooner has its good points, and as a vintage set - I'd love to have it; it's awesome. But I have the Barracuda, and am more than satisfied. I've collected every classic Pirate minifigure in existence, and I just add them to the old ship. Only a difference of a few years - all vintage; all awesome.

    Well put: the Skull's Eye Schooner is indeed more "menacing" than the Barracuda. And the extra sail in the back, double number of cannon ports and added play features do make it a superior build. Still, I'll always find the red sails prettier, and the Barracuda tickles my nostalgia more...
    By the way, I think yellow might work for the cannon panels. Combine with an all yellow figure (something like the Barracuda has) at the bow for continuity -- solves your bow problem as well!

    Trikbrix, when I first saw your vid I was the guy that thought the Barracuda was the #1 ultimate ship. I pointed out that I didn't like the Skull's Eye cabin doors, green cannon covers, etc. In time in grew on me though. This video helped that happen. I started looking for them online and on Ebay, and the nice ones that popped up lasted less than an hour. I soon began to realize this was "the ship". So, having a Barracuda, both Imperial Flagships, Red Beard Runner, and new Barracuda, I had to get this. The one's on ebay are either a disaster or have reproduction sails. Being the purist that I am, I needed OG sails. So, I put a post on Facebook, ISO of Skull's Eye, and a lady from Washington messaged me. Now I have a near mint, original-sails, original great conidition box and instructions, Skull's Eye on the way!

    I was never even a kid who liked or ever had Legos (don't get natural satisfaction from working with my hands, building things, that kind of stuff... I know it's clearly satisfying for many people but it just isn't there, I'm more of a book/nerdy videogame/anime type), but when I went to go pick out something with my grandmother as a like 10 year old and saw this, I fell in love with it instantly and had to have it. It was definitely a more difficult process to put together than I had imagined, but I also get that that's a huge part of the whole Lego thing that people like... I just wanted to get it finished but had zero experience with Legos lol, and looking back I can see there was a learning curve I was just trying to go all the way up in one step and that was pretty stupid of me. It was so great when I did finally figure everything out though. It's really neat to hear that it's really loved among Lego enthusiasts.... I mean it had to be truly exceptional to get my attention the way it did when I wasn't even remotely thinking about a Lego set going to Toys r Us that day.

    I always saw (and particularly with the new one) the Black Seas Barracuda as Redbeard’s personal luxury vessel. Skull’s Eye Schooner is the warship. The extra and emphasis on adjustable cannons and the Jolly Roger making it more apparent that the ship means business. Skull’s Eye was not meant to replace Barracuda. It’s just an addition to the fleet.

    I completely agree, this is also my favourite LEGO set to date, followed closely by the Black Knights Castle and the UCS Hogwarts Castle.
    The red and green combo is a bit jarring, I admit. Yet, since I'm Portuguese, it's something I never disliked because, well, those are the colours of our national flag so it's a combo I'm very accustomed to see. I am also lucky since my set does have the shooting canons we get in Europe.
    I do intend, however, to create a new and updated version of this, following what LEGO did with the Barracuda. I think it's a set well worth a modern remake.

  • @defaultdaniel

    It's a cool set, but I still prefer the Black Seas. The Skull's Eye is similar in the size department, same number of sails, similar number of pieces, etc., but the Skull's Eye comes off as more tacky. For example, why are the cannon flaps green when nothing else on the ship is that color? Secondly, the flat smooth panel on the rear of the ship, being the skull and crossbones looks cheap. This ship should've taken notes from the Red Beard Runner in that department, which has the coolest rear of all the ships. Lastly, what really irks my OCD is the old-style city-like white house doors leading to the cabin. Bad choice. Other than that it's pretty cool.

    The more modern pirate ships (from 2009 and 2015) were both inspired by the black seas barracuda. I thought this was fine for the 2009 ship but I feel like the 2015 ship just feels like a remake of the 2009 ship. If they used the colour palette of the skull's eye it would stand out more.
    BTW the sails from the 2015 brick bounty are realistic it's only the 2009 brickyards bounty that uses the cartoony skull.

    • @TrikBrix
      @TrikBrix  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really wish they would do an updated, modern version of the SES... it would be awesome to see what they could come up with using new elements and building techniques!

  • @markofbrick
    @markofbrick 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I definitely like the Schooner better of the two, one of my only complaints is the cabin doors aren't as cool as the dual brown swinging ones. I think red flags covering the cannon slots work best, as red is already a bit of an accent color, and I like the windows to stand out a little.
    The turning rudder, turning / sliding cannons, and dedicated spot to store the rowboat all show improvements in designs, but I think a slightly larger cabin with better doors would have helped out a lot

    The black mast is superior!And this ship is great! I got brickbeards bounty and eldorado fortress and they are amazing too! I customized the Brickbeard Bounty to look like Black Seas Barracuda to have a bridge around the center and the hole in a center where are the crates for cannonballs and cannons and the front is not like the center hole (cannon room) its on the same height like the round bridge so i placed a few red bricks to get it up and then placed some brown plates to be in the same color. I agree that is a majestic ship BUT the Barracuda is so much better! First of all, the color choices of this ship are just horrendous. By far the worst chromatic combination of all the LEGO pirates ship out there. The green on the sides, the blue lanterns, the blue table, the white doors, everything is just so bad, while the chromatic choices of the Barracuda are just perfect. I may agree that black sails are more menacing but one of the fantastic thig of LEGO pirates theme is that is colorful, it's joyful, so the red sails for me are much more charming. The captains cabin of the barracuda is so much more elegant, and easier to open and to play with. There is no steering mechanism but this leaves the space for the small window on captain's cabin to spy into the deck that for me is pure genius. The entrance of the cabin is so much better with the double wooden doors, compared to these 2 white doors that look like they are coming from a lego city set. The golden tip of the boat is so much better also, overall I think the Barracuda shines compared to this one. The only thing here that I like more is the additional sail missing in the Barracuda, but for everything else in my opinion barracuda looks so much better
