This was bugging me for years! I mostly messed with it until it worked, not being sure what I did to fix it. I also googled it a time or two and didn't find any satisfactory results. This video perfect and I'll never struggle with this again. Thank you. (Also, too many Figma videos are 15+ minutes long - appreciate these less than three minute ones!)
Exactly the reason I made this vid! Very hard to find quick answers.
Thanks for posting solution of this problem.
Thank you, !! what a weird way of doing things Figma, who puts a mask on from behind ?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was driving me up a wall! Only because it works in the complete opposite way that literally every other graphics program works. I'm going to say it one more time, THANK YOU!
2 years later, it did help me. Thanks.
This is life saving information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video! So frustrating...A software used to create a good UX for other, doesn't have a great UX (for this tool)
Haha couldn't have put it better myself. Yeah, it is not as intuitive as one would hope.
THANK YOU!!!!!
I'm new to figma and have been using adobe products and this is literally so stupid that you have to put the shape behind the thing you want to mask
Being an adobe user for many years, this confused me a lot.. and the process of working is very backward of how you normally would think.
I am convinced this was done by somebody who really hated designers in general and wanted them to be miserable. Figma is potentially great tool, but it's incredibly hostile with some of it's needlessly nuanced and pointlessly different approaches that just create problems and confusion.
FINALLY!!!!! omg i never had the shape FILLED. arghhhhghghg
Wow thanks man
Hello, I'm a developer here in Brazil, and I needed to export an image in a specific size in figma, and man, I was unable to use the mask at all
This video helped a lot!!!! Thank you very much.🙌
Glad I was able to help, Marco. Yeah this confused me for a while, as well.
a lot of things in figma are unnecessarily confusing, especially for a product supposed to be made for UX
I hope Figma change this, as in my opinion, it is the opposite way we should mask objects...
Thanks Thalaiva..!
exactly my problem, thanks bro
You helped me dude... was just using stroke and pulling my hair out. Swapped to fill and Boom, masked group displayed. THANK YOU
P.S. I wish FIGMA would really harp on this point in their help docs about masking...
I don't know why they made it this way, honestly. But glad I could help! This frustrated me for a while as well.
You are my hero
Hey I was wondering if you can help me out, I want to add a grunge texture on a Text, a tutorial showed me you put the text ON TOP of the overlay then click and drag and hit mask..... but they just disappear and when I try to put the text on the back I see the overlay, but I want it to be distressed look on the text. what am I doing wrong? I hope that made sense. Thanks in advance
howwwwwwwwwwww the fudge i put stroke on my shape ,,,,,, pls reply
Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching, Gemma!
Figma mask makes no sense to me, so hard to use
You could've just explained that the mask is being created from the bottom layer, instead of the upper layer, that's the whole point, because honestly, the video sort of looks like you are discovering how it works along with your audience. I hate how this works in Figma, but once you understand that you have to think backwards, you won't have any issues.
figma mask sucks
