Something I really love about the setting is HOW it was developed through solo play. Would love to see a few paragraphs in the book about how something like that could be accomplished through our own play.
3:22 historically people were really afraid of putting gun powder next to their face. You'd fire a cannon by lighting a fuse and then standing back. But a gun you need a lit wick to hit a pan right next to your face. Also people were afraid of pistol misfires because they were more likely to injure your hand. You could say in your world that gun powder is more volatile or is an eye irritant or something.
I almost cracked my screen tapping on this video! 😊 I found out about MM&D and TBE from the TBE interview on Black Lodge Games and have quickly consumed MM&D content, which is something I rarely do. Hats off to Trevor.
I had noticed on the image of Arne's character sheet that he was referred to as an Ironlander, so I was going to ask about that but you addressed it here. I think it's pretty cool of Shawn to let the Ironlands officially cross over with the Broken Empires. I'm thrilled for you that the Kickstarter has done so well and I hope it gets him some more sales, too, because he deserves it.
Simon was the pebble thrown into the pond. Well done and so grateful for all your knowledge and passion with rpging. I am now a solo rpg GM\Player which I thought was impossible until you introduced the world to Simon. Thank you.
it’s so freaking cool to have world building happen from all the seasons of play, you’ve done such a wonderful job at knitting it all together, making the world and the setting feel so alive and developed! i can’t wait to get a copy!
While I haven't been with you from the very start, I am a faithful follower since the early days and feel deeply connected to the setting and characters. I cannot wait to explore this world myself! Also, I'm beyond thrilled to learn the setting's been expanded on so that there's more for me to discover! Fantastic work, Trevor. Tomorrow can't come soon enough!!!
Oh man. The low Fantasy is amazing. There are so many things that are right the way I like it. The combat system sounds great, the magic is awesome. The crunch is quite low. Mechanics seam to be designed to help the narrative instead of having a super balanced video game / card game like experience. And now the way you describe the low magic setting. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 I was reading the XDM when I started out DMing. I had not enough experience with TTRPGs to make it really work. Too many blanks to fill in in every session. I needed a bit more rules to see how a game can flow. Pf2e was great for that. But it took like 1.5 hours to make a non spell caster. That did not fly well with dangerous combat. And all those feats where way to much to remember in combat for my players to really the the fully balanced experience pf2e actually offers. Now I am slowly getting there. And man does your game sit in the sweet spot I was longing for all the time!!
As an Australian, I'm proud that we've made it into The Broken Empires based on our proud criminal history. Also I didn't take your beer; it wasn't me, I didn't do it, you can't prove a thing 😜
I would love to see @DungeonMasterpiece make a geopolitics video on Ansharir, or see him explain the gunpowder situation that so many people are already commenting about!! Part of the world was randomly generated during the show, but a lot of it seems to have been created specifically for the book. How did Old Vestria, Dune Blain, Hoen Valers, the lore about Dwarves came to be? General brainstorming?
Those dwarves sound cool. A ragtag fleet of dwarven airships, driven from their homes by the cyb-orcs, searching for the lost 13th tribe of dwarves, in search of the lost Tome of Instructions. :)
pretty sure it was "collaborator"? Think it would've been easier if he had just said Orc sympathizer or idk, Ally? It was a fun little bit of that episode for sure.
The cannon thing could maybe be the ironworking isn't good enough to create human bearable small arms without it exploding or being too heavy? I dunno. I guess big stronk folks could still have cannons, maybe of questionable quality, and you could have skullduggery with a loadout, one shot and it explodes thing. I assume the different nonhuman peoples have skills as part of their ability set that are maybe hard or impossible to get for most human beings? Or is it all learnable, say if a human kid grew up in a Dwarven caravan?
I wouldn't call it low fantasy but instead I would say it's not gonzo fantasy like some of the other RPGs out there, such as those you refer to. Anyways, looking forward to the launch.
It'd be really neat if you could find a scientist/worldbuilder that could give a more solid reason about why gunpowder works for canons but not guns (yet) Just a little more scientific detail about why that chemical doesn't have the power at lower calibres.
It could be the formula for gunpowder is different here. Some sort of geological consideration that requires a larger amount of material for flashpoint or ignition that makes small arms impossible or impractical.
That sounds like exactly the kind of thing an individual GM can provide their own unique explanation for, thereby putting their own stamp on their particular version of the world :)
It doesn't really need a special reason. In real history, cannons were commonplace before guns, and the earliest guns were just small cannons on the end of a stick.
Simplest answer to me is that generally available metallurgy isn't up to it. The walls of cannons are much thicker than the walls of a pistol/rifle barrel. Thinning the walls of the barrel down to where it's portable results in the barrels almost always exploding when enough powder is used to make it an effective weapon.
I have backed your game. I think I like the style of rules and that you say that it can be adapted to other settings as well which is nice since many of us, RPG nerds, tend to like to create our own stuff. What I would reaaaally like is to have some advice in the rules book, for how to maybe tweak or add stuff. What I´m specifically thinking about is guns since you say that there are none and I'd like to have them in the game. Would that be possible?
9:50 No idea how the machines work? Semi-religious rituals to keep them going? For a second I thought you're talking about the Adeptus Mechanicus from WH40K :)
Congratulations for the funding (which i'm part of, of course) Like you, I am a big fan of Hârn. But I always were too intimidated by the Harnmaster rules to actually play with them in this setting. How easy would you say it would be to use Broken Empire in the Hârn setting, especially to emulate its Magic and religion system ?
@YannMiollan and without the materials, there wouldn't be a proper prototype, hence a weaker metal called "iron" for those outside of the veil, yet not true iron.
@@coldstream11 In the latest AMA he specified that only the magic system was tied-ish to the setting... everything else seems to be adaptable. I'm curious, what kind of setting were you thinking about?
See I didn't know low fantasy usually means that there are not cities or locations with a healthy mixture of peoples. In a world I have been making/thinking about is low magic/fantasy but I am trying to make major cities mixed up pretty good. So maybe I cannot call it low fantasy/low magic to try to categorize it.
Honestly. Low Fantasy usually means that anything out of Human scope is rarer. He does say Low Fantasy, but I think both his and yours is more akin to Mid Fantasy (its more of an axis than strictly "THIS" to me). Yours is just a bit more towards High Fantasy, while his more towards Low. Makes sense?
@@Mr_Chinchila Yeah that makes sense. Honestly it is difficult to brainstorm in the world I am going for. I want to make areas where each race started so it makes sense. But I am pretty sick of the idea that ALL elves live here while all dwarves live over there. But all my references from movies and books I've read always go that route. So it's just a struggle but I'll keep going with it.
@@TomTrustworthy One way I once did was, forget the races specific thing and focus on climate and geography and how that affect each people. What do I mean, if you're going cosmopolitan yes, each race/species has their advantages but in the setting maybe it's less of a "we're dwarves thus we from here" and more like two countries that have dwarves amidst them that have different cultures they're inserted in. I think Erebor from D&D kinda does this.

Trevor, I just want to say, once again, that it is wonderful to be on this journey with you. I'm proud of you, and wish you all the best.
Thank you so much!
I love how there are thirteen wandering tribes of Dwarves in Air Ships. That is just amazing.

I agree about the 'grey box' forgotten realms. It was a good template for creating your own world.

I’d love to run a campaign set in the Malazan world with this game. It would work.
I was thinking something similar. This is one of the few games that could make the Warrens work as Erikson has described.
Sovereign Stone back in the day had dwarf horseman akin to the Mongol

I'm excitedly looking forward to the launch tomorrow and the book is looking really good!
Love the Harn inspired approach of capping the date of the setting!
An RPG lives or dies first by the rules but next by the art. I hope you get fantastic artists for this project.
Have you seen our prelaunch page?

The legend returns
I am so excited to get this, the timer is counting down!
Yes! It's obvious how much of yourself you've put into this, can't wait.
All you did with this video is make me cash in more saving bonds, great job Trevor!
"My beloved Hârn"? Count me in 😀
Wonderful! I'm backing this! Thanx Trevor!
Sounds awesome!
Can't wait to read about these places, and see the art!
This setting gives me some serious Joe Abercrombie-vibes
It's almost here, Trevor!!!
The Black Lands of Dun Blaine?! Any setting with Fantasy Scotland, Ireland or Wales(or better yet all 3) INSTANTLY gets top marks from me!

I'm overly excited for this!! Can't wait!
This really sounds like my preferred level of fantasy in many aspects. Just like the games I ran over thirty years ago.
This is gonna be epic !!!! so looking forward to this.
I hope the “elves” are included within the core rulebook.

They all come from the maelstrom that is my imagination :)
So this is feeling like a kitchen sink approach. Like Golarion or Abeir Toril, stretching from the Middle ages to the early Renaissance.
Those dwarves sound cool. A ragtag fleet of dwarven airships, driven from their homes by the cyb-orcs, searching for the lost 13th tribe of dwarves, in search of the lost Tome of Instructions. :)
Sounds like you've got your campaign planned out already! (I hope yours has a better ending... 🤓)
I have my own setting! Good decision to follow Hârns lead.
Are Simon and the others present in the book? Also can’t wait for tomorrow! Good luck!
Ye Gods Trevor... supplemental Kickstarters.... Looks like I better start saving my pennies again
I'm hoping that FE contains adaptations of Appendix A&B, even if they are stretch goals or a separate zine.
What is FE?
ahh yes, Simon the Orc Cohorter lol, good memories!
wasn't it "cavorter"? xD
pretty sure it was "collaborator"? Think it would've been easier if he had just said Orc sympathizer or idk, Ally? It was a fun little bit of that episode for sure.
Is there a summary of considerations we should make when making our own setting for the Broken Empires? Aside from how magic works

Maybe the sea armada has a monopole on gunpowder, worldwide ;)

9:50 No idea how the machines work? Semi-religious rituals to keep them going? For a second I thought you're talking about the Adeptus Mechanicus from WH40K :)
That was an influence :)
And what about the broken empires themselves? What were those empires? Why they broke? See you guys in the KS
Will The Broken Empires be classless? I don't remember if you have mentioned it.
Yes.

It’s possible! Would take just a tiny tweak or two. Harn rocks.
Maybe the only Iron strong enough for guns is in the Ironlands
That would mean that the only ones selling it would be the ones who know how to go beyond the Ironveil... making the price extremely high.
@YannMiollan and without the materials, there wouldn't be a proper prototype, hence a weaker metal called "iron" for those outside of the veil, yet not true iron.
I’m curious whether you’ve planned for any aboriginal or shamanistic tribes that might pre-date what appears to be a relatively late-medieval setting?
We’re only now fleshing out the world, but I don’t see why not.
I wish it didn’t have a setting. It’s obvious you have a great setting but people often do their own. You should do two books.
Nothing is stopping you from using your own setting.
Yes of course, but as you point out your mechanics are partially married to the setting. It should be ok but im just being picky
Be picky! T’is your right! :)
