I never thought I’d have to explain why these are considered “poorman”, but here I go.. It’s called poorman versions because the original recipes are WAY more expensive than these. Original Beef stroganoff calls for more expensive ingredients. Beef stew calls for stewed meat which around here is $12 minimum for a pack! When 1/2 a pound of hamburger is $1.92.. The total cost of both of these meals were around $5 and some change.
Brooke my love, people can be so idiotic! Your channel can and would save people so much money if they would just LISTEN and FOLLOW directions! Welcome to my life LOL:)
Just a cooking tip on extending the beef even more. Instead of draining the beef, add quick oatmeal to it and it will take on the flavors, good fiber, and stretch that protein flavor.
I also add cauliflower rice instead, to extend it to hamburger for taco meat or spaghetti sauce. Has to be cooked after hamburger almost cooked. Love your channel!
My mama would make these simple type meals for us in the 70's as a single parent.( Beef was a cheaper meat back then) As a kid they never felt like a "poor man's meal" we just loved the meals and we never knew they were budget meals. 🙂 Thanks for another great video. Great video!
Another inexpensive meal my mama made that I loved was hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes or rice. You only use 1/2 lb of hamburger and make a roux gravy adding beef bouillon. So tasty and filling on a Fall day!
I sometimes need to rely on the food bank, and they give me a lot of canned beans in tomato sauce. I will fry up some onion and garlic, mix in the beans in tomato sauce and add some flavours.. then use it on buns as sloppy joes!
Thank you Brooke. I love the recipes that you turn out. In expensive but tasty! Keep being Kind! Keep giving that SMILE to others. You have brightened yet another rainy day.
Hamburger Stroganoff was a favorite of ours when I was growing up. My mother made it and I made it and loved it as did the rest of the family. But I must say your version is a modern version because cream cheese was not even on the market 80-85 years ago when we had our "poor-man" meals. Cream cheese is an extravagant addition that surely adds creaminess. addictiveness. We have never added that, so it can be even less expensive. I love your channel and look forward to it all the time.
I make beef stroganoff a lot in my marriage of 57 years I too never use cream cheese I will have to try it that way hubby love noodle and me mashed taters. lol
We use a lot of canned milk in our cooking because fresh milk wasn’t always available in Alaska back in the day. I live on a farm in Missouri and I’ve learned to make my own sour cream, butter, mayonnaise, home made bullion, etc. so glad my momma taught me how to cook old school. Love you Mom! Miss you every single day. 💙💙

Thank you Brooke. You reminded me I have some egg noodles. We are at zero spend use what we have mode. Tonight is some type of meat (hoping I have some frozen chicken thighs) Along with my famous dressing (A box of generic stovetop, an onion, 2 apples, some celery, can of chicken broth stick of butter). I will write down some instructions and post a pic to FB later. In a few mins I am taking inventory of all I have and making a plan for the next zero spend week😮. I’m thankful that I have what I need for the next week for sure, though the menu will be a bit different from the norm.

My mom made what she called hamburger stroganoff by cooking her hamburger and some onions. Then adding, the flour, a bit of ketchup(some use tomato paste, and then a can of beef consomme. Then, you added sour cream at the end. she always served with baked potatoes and not noodles. Another of her recipes was basically a sloppy joe mixture in a cup made out of a canned biscuit rolled out really thin. The nostalgic recipes tend to be the cheap ones and the good ones at least for me. Taking ground beef/any protein really and bulking it up with potatoes, rice, beans, etc is a great way to stretch the food budget.
If you buy ground turkey because it is more affordable than ground beef, if you put Worcestershire sauce on it as you cook it, it will make it taste more beef like. A tip I learned from another TH-camr.
@@robinguertin574 nope, and I don't either when I make them. Everything is put it cooked, so you just cook them until the biscuits are done and cheese is melted (if it has cheese)
Poorman's stew brings back memories. I fed 7 of us with almost the exact same thing. Add cornbread and you have an awesome southern fall meal. My kids still ask for it.
We love beef stroganoff! Great comfort food. I have never put cream cheese in ours but I’m sure my family would love it. And, I do add about 2TB of Worcestershire sauce for the tang.
I make the stroganoff with only two additional ingredients added to the cream sauce mixture (diced onion cooked with meat and a table spoon of mustard) it really is very inexpensive yet so ooo tasty! Going to have to try the crock pot stew for sure!
I would have tossed a can of SOME vegetable into it. Probably a can of peas or a small head of broccoli in the pasta water. I add at least one can of veggies in pretty much everything I cook.
I have used all types of mustard it's whatever flavor you like best really. I mix it up because everyone in my household has a different favorite kind of mustard lolol As for adding veggies, I believe the recipe I first saw did have peas in it but we aren't fans of peas so I always make a veggie side usually salad.
first time seeing your channel, i actually loved this video. that’s called a “roux” when you start gravy with butter/grease and flour, you could’ve stretched it even further with a bit of milk. thanks for the ideas, good video, you really stretched the food. love the poorman’s stroganoff! i will be trying both of these recipes. your youngest son’s reaction was awesome, hope he was able to be revived after “passing out” from deliciousness hahaha😎
I am still trying to learn how to NOT cook for an army. When I see you use a half pound of ground beef, I think if I ever used just a half pound of ground beef for a dinner my kids would die of shock. It takes a while to get used to cooking for less people when the kids grow up and move out. I am definitely trying that beef stew this weekend, it looks delicious.
Both of these look great. I'm going to try them but especially the stroganoff. I usually buy the Hamburger Helper but this is homemade and healthier. Thanks for sharing.
Besides biscuits and gravy for frugal meal we often had fried taters with an over easy egg on top. Or a pancake the size of a dinner plate with two eggs on top. A tip for homemade pancakes, French toast or waffles is to add a couple tablespoons of syrup to the batter then you have the flavor but. Or the mess and loss of extra syrup. Oh I
An even easier, streamlined version of stroganoff - brown your meat in a large/deep pan/pot, then add mushrooms if desired (drain beef if needed first). Add beef boullion powder or onion soup mix or some combination of onion and garlic powders, salt, favourite seasonings (add worchestershire or soy sauce if not using boullion powder), then you uncooked pasta (macaroni or something small and sturdy works best). Barely cover with boiling water from kettle, pop on the lid and simmer on low until pasta is cooked, stirring occasionally. Do not drain (you might need to add water). Remove from heat and stir in sour cream (quantity depending on how much sour cream you have and how creamy you like it). We eat this *a lot*. It's easy like hamburger helper but cheaper. The basic technic of cooking the noodles with the beef etc we call "noodles in a pan" and you can make it any number of ways... tex mex? Canned tomatoes and chili powder, cumin, oregano and a can of black beans (which can even replace the meat) or corn. Italian? Canned tomatoes or spag sauce, italian seasoning, sprinkle on some cheese if you have. Ukrainian? Saute onions (a few different kinds is good if you have growing in the garden etc) and garlic until softened, then bring half water and half milk to a boil. Add dill and whatever seasonings you like. Add pasta and cook on low. Add in softened cream cheese at end to mix to incorporate. I will sometimes add fresh or frozen spinach, kale or swiss chard to any of these to boost nutrition. Those all grow prolifically in my garden all summer and I can buy spinach and kale frozen cheap on sale through the winter (once I've used up my own that I've blanched and frozen).
i use fresh onions, and celerys, fresh garlic, and those stew meats with bones in them, i use beef broth with same type of seasonings & veggies that you use.
I love my fetch app. I use it for restaurant gift cards because we go to dinner every Christmas Eve and that's what I used to help pay for the family dinner.

I make poor man's beef stew all the time. My family loves it! I add chopped onion, if I have any on hand. I also make poor man's lasagna using 2 boxes of Mac and cheese, 1/2 lb hamburger meat, a jar of spaghetti sauce, and a little bit of shredded mozzarella.
Hi this is the wife, l have been making beef stroganoff for over 30 years, and never have l ever put in cream cheese into mine,l either buy a cheap cut of steak or left over roast for mine, l put some flour in a bowl, about 1/2 cup, and season it with your favorite spices, eg, garlic, onion powders, paprika, pepper, no salt at this time, toss the meat, fry it in some ghee/EVOO, while that is cooking, a can of mushroom soup with a can of water, (your might need 2 cans) add a couple tablespoons of worchester sauce, and mix till smooth, add to meat and add some chopped up mushrooms (they go further) and mix all together and simmer for an hour. Will thicken because of flour on meat. Cook noodles drain and add to mixture. but just before that add some sour cream., mix and serve add another dollop of sour cream. yum. PS it freezes up well too. l kinda of double the recipe and freeze half for another night.
no ground beef on hand no canned mushrooms~ however .. I DO have ground turkey and a few fresh mushrooms.. gonna make this work :) and the beef stew looks yummy too 😋

They look very hearty... Which is a good thing..
lol, just found your channel on yt last week, looked at your budget challenges (sorry no native English speaker, so maybe some language mistakes ) and love the
way you make it, and bring it really fun. Also love the little guy pass out when he likes the food you made on budget. Keep making those movies, and I gonna check out the channel of your hubby too. Your really a great family of people . luv u .
If u let the ads play during Brooke's video, it helps her GREATLY. Thx folks.
My favorite poor man meal is beef ramen with sour cream. (I leave a little water) taste just like Beef stroganoff but less than $2.00 to make.
Your stew looks really good. I might have put beef bouillon in too😊. I use Receipt Hog as well as Fetch.
Thanks for your tips!🙏🏻
That garlic powder hitting different 😂 I love it both meals look amazing!!
That stroganoff is almost identical to the one my granny made. Yum!
no ground beef on hand no canned mushrooms~ however .. I DO have ground turkey and a few fresh mushrooms.. gonna make this work :) and the beef stew looks yummy too 😋
The tomato paste was a real shocker to me. Thanks for the ideas!
