the spool of yarn in your Jawol is to knit into your heels and toes of the socks to reinforce them. Really loving the video so far. hope you are also feeling better x

Oh my goodness that makes so much sense 😅 why didn't I think of that?

@@RetroClaude its really not obvious. I used to stock it at my yarn shop (now closed) and had to ask my supplier what it was.

    • @SarcasticShrubbery
      @SarcasticShrubbery ปีที่แล้ว +14

Came here to see if anyone had already mentioned this :) I've used the reinforcement yarn on the heel and toes, but as it turns out, my knit socks tend to wear and develop holes mostly under the ball of my foot. I wonder if I should use the reinforcement yarn for that area? If anyone has tried that, I'd love to know.

    • @ievalibeka8171
      @ievalibeka8171 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@SarcasticShrubbery Yes, You absolutely can :) I'm just a beginner knitter, but after wearing through the first few pairs of socks so quickly I'm now adding reinforcement yarn in all the spots (toes, under the ball of foot and outer side of foot for me) and it really helps with maintenance darning :)

I'm so happy that you were able to get some things off your WIP pile! I love the blue lace top -- it really suits you. I've always thought the Jawoll spools were an interesting idea, but given that the yarn has nylon content, I've never actually used the the spool yarn to reinforce the heels and toes, but I *have* used it to make repairs in socks that have worn thin. Those spots are never where I would have expected them to be, so just as well that I waited to use the spool yarn! I'm really interested to see that Dr. Jaeger-inspired corset.

Congrats on finally finishing the blue lace!!
Using any yarn that's the right weight definitely sounds like the right move for the hexipuff quilt. I think if a nice cohesive colour scheme isn't possible then the next best option is to shove lots and lots of colours in and hope it balances out.
I'm currently working on a patchwork dressing gown and it has some pretty ugly colour combinations if you look at the individual pieces up close, but then from far away it all blends together into a pleasant jumbled pattern.

I have been in hospital since Monday (I‘m ok recovering very well thankfully) with absolutely no Wi-Fi. Your Video was the only one so far I was willing to use my mobile data (in Germany we have a set amount included in the cell plan and then internet gets unusably slow if we don’t pay for an upgrade) to watch! Yay! Glad the cursed blouse got finished! Maybe that 1840s lace glove that's too big can be a hat or a reticule? Your videos always inspire me to knit, so this time I planned ahead and had my knitting with me before I hit play! I'm working on some baby things for a dance friend who is expecting. She let slip that she doesn't have friends her age, so we're planning a surprise shower and I'm knitting hats (and probably some booties/socks).

I am 100% loving your stash-down series! A thought about the crocheted stars, or items like that, the first thing I thought was you could totally join them into a scarf (crochet around them). I think it would make a darling scarf. And if that's not your thing, start a donate pile for completed things that you don't want to keep. Find a local homeless shelter, women and children's program, etc. to donate them to. I inherited a ton of wool/acrylic bend yarn and am stock-piling knitted hats for a local homeless program.

Well done! I unfortunately wasn't well enough to get any WIP finished, let alone UFOs. Next year.
*Hexipuffs you don't like - I know plenty of other people are taken with the quilt too, and are working on their own version. Could you gift them or swap with someone so they're not just abandoned?
*projects you've lost interest in - with things like this I tell myself just to work on it for 30 min or so. That way I don't commit to be bored and thus not start, but it's still making progress slowly. I am impressed with your daisy garment progress though!
*pink gloves - are you planning to knit more "keep warm" accessories for next winter? The too-small gloves would likely be appreciated by a teen girl.
*Victorian gloves - 😱 so tiny. I suppose also when people had less clothes they appreciated each piece more, and when there's no tv or internet to be a black hole of time, then you had the evenings or spare moments to work on it.
*cotton baby hat - I knit my nephew a baby hat from bamboo when he was born and it ended up adult size also! 😏

Viewing the patchwork jumper on it's own it looks so much better. The colours you've chosen work so well and I love the sleeves.Susan Crawford designs some fab vintage knitwear and the yarns she produces have such beautiful vintage colours and good yarn weights.

Well done finishing those two sweaters! I love them both. I was thinking you could maybe take in the sides of the patchwork blouse so it's less baggy. Just literally sew in darts and cut out the excess. Don't fuss about with unpicking the panels and reknitting them. The colors look great on you and giving it some darts in the side could make it so you'll actually wear something that you put so much time into. ❤

That crochet bra is fascinating! But I'm also cracking up at the page in the instruction booklet you showed for it - get ready for the cold weather! With a cotton fishnet bra 😂 Do you think that would have helped keep you toasty in your reveal footage at the end?
I'm really intrigued by the knitted corset, especially with bones and busk et al. It'll be interesting to see how functional it is as a supportive foundation layer. Re: tiny knitting, I remember reading an interview many years ago with a woman who does miniature knitting and she said she got her husband to make her some needles out of piano wire because that's all she could find at the correct gauge 😱

I have a quilt (sewn) that ive made from tiny squares of all the fabric I used for my past projects and it brings me much joy remembering all the things I've made while looking at it - even if it's a mismatched riot of color. It does have a fair bit of white space to balance out, maybe neutral/s would eventually help balance your hexi puff stash quilt too.

I really love that cornflower blue, lace pullover. It haunted you for months, but the finished item is very lovely and I hope you get a lot of wear out of it! The Victorian lace swatch - would it be large enough to continue in pattern and make a hat? Maybe one of those teeny, lace caps?
I was inspired by you and have also been working on my stash. Everything was going well, I made a whole dang sweater, some socks, mitts, a hat that I'd had planned since 2015... and then I found some vintage wool yarn in a thrift shop for cheap. It's in quarantine in my freezer.

Just a thought - I also feel like I can’t throw away yarn scraps, but for the truly tiny amounts that I can’t really knit with, I just save them to use as stuffing in knitted toys or pillows. Perhaps you could use some leftover yarn bits to stuff your hexipuffs? Works best with lofty yarns.

Ah!!! I had the same thing with my Jawoll yarn! I assumed it was a cardboard tube for stability and SURPRISE! IT WASN'T! Then I forgot to reinforce the heel and toe with it for that sock project. So I allocated the thread to a different pair of socks. And forgot to use it there too. So... yup.

You can use the 100% cotton yarn to make dishcloths. I've made--knit and crochet--and used these for many years and they are my favorite dishcloth, especially when handwashing dishes. I think your hexagon afghan is going to be terrific with your various yarns; good decision! Your lacy short-sleeved sweater looks wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing how the knitted corset develops. Hope you're feeling well.

I have just finished a crochet blanket I started last May, so November to February for the lace jumper seems quite reasonable to me!

Lovely to see you wearing the lace top, after all the glitches. I would love to hear you talk about what you wear under 1940s knitted tops, especially lace ones. They strike me as a very wearable vintage style and a prettier alternative to modern teeshirts (which often come with a percentage of lycra). Do you layer them over a camisole or a petticoat.

As a Norwegian the fact that every knitter on TH-cam not from Norway who talks about knitting for babies and children consistently avoids real wool blows my mind. 😅 In Norway when knitting for children we knit with wool, often merino wool, almost exclusively, and especially for the closest to skin garments. If we knit with anything else it will most often be for summer garments or bc it is a non Norwegian pattern requiring the specific properties of that fiber.
Merino wool is also by far the best fabric for premature babies to help with temperature regulation.
The reasons we use wool are for the specific properties only true wool has, like keeping warmth even when wet, regulating temperature, anti bacterial to some degree, keeps it’s shape well and so on.
Most modern washing machines have gentle enough wool wash programs to make keeping the wool garments clean very easy.
But also Norwegians view knitted garments as utility items, they are meant to be worn, often daily. And this is even more true the further north you go in Norway.
    It’s a fascinating culture difference really 🤔

I agree. To me it is strange that even many of my vintage 1950s and 60s patterns are designed for nylon or acrylic yarns. I can only think that it comes down to fashion. Post-war Britain was pretty grim and a generation of children brought up on Make Do and Mend hand me downs violently rejected anything traditional in favour of new modern inventions, like synthetic fibres. Wearing wool was for old men smoking pipes in pubs. Either that or it's because it's cheaper.
Plus I think most people just don't know how to use a washing machine? I often get shocked comments if I mention I machine wash my knits. Maybe in countries where they use mostly top loader washing machines it's too risky but the wool cycle on my machine has never ruined anything.

By the looks of it, the victorian lace mitton could probably be made into a hat for a baby, and look very lovely.

Ooh! I got my hands on a vintage daisy knitter recently after I came across it in a pattern. I'm not sure yet what I'll use it for, but I'm eager to try it out and see some other daisy patterns. I'll be watching close to see how your project turns out!

I think the cardboard tube with the 2-ply on it is for sewing up (and maybe it's enough for a sweater?). You could always use those tiny needles to put something together? Beautiful work. Well done. I still have to sew the lining into my FR entry... I giving myself until Friday to get it done.

I’m loving the patchwork jumper. I’m currently looking through my stash to see if I have enough 4ply to knit my own.

Both tops look fab. Was discussing my granny's knitting earlier and I think the fact that the patchwork top is not a perfect fit is probably pretty accurate if her jumpers are anything to go by! I think people didn't adjust their gauge as much but then that could just be my granny?!
The lace gloves sound amazing, can I suggest looking up bobbin lace suppliers as they have lots of very fine hight twist thread in a range of colours and fibres. I hope you have a chance to make them at some point.
Thank you for the company as I learn to crochet for the first time. I always enjoy your videos as a connection with craft loving chronically ill people. I hope you seasonal depression improves with the increased daylight. 😊
