    for new players I would suggest more budget products since they will have to spend soooo much on cards and the more money left over for cards the better! just get some ultra pro sleeves, a BCW small cardboard box that will hold your deck, tokens, dice,sideboard etc. go to your local 5 below or dollor store to get some dice and I wouldn't worry about needing a play mat. As for a binder just get a 3 ring binder and some ultra pro pages.
    what you are suggesting is that some new player needs to spend $100's on just accessories. That will just scare new players off, thinking they NEED all this stuff even before they spend $100-$infinite on a deck. Well a competitive deck.

    • @kuru-chan6644
      @kuru-chan6644 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This, for sure. Honestly in terms of sleeves KMC can actually be more affordable depending on where you live (in Japan they are around $5 per packet, and here in China I can get similar prices. Should be the roughly the same in Singapore, I think) so there's no need to downgrade to Ultra Pro in some cases, as their sleeves really aren't that great.
      As for deck boxes I feel that the cheaper Ultra Pro deckboxes (the ones with Deck Box right on the front) are probably better than using a BCW box. Yeah, they aren't great either but I would certainly prefer them to cardboard (this may be preference though).

    • @JuQmadrid
      @JuQmadrid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +koskey06 This is what realy the video should be saying. The only item of those I would recomend to a new player from among the featured in the video are those card storage boxes.
      For sleves, the cheap ones that came on 100 sleves bags for 1€ are more than enough. for deck box also the cheapest one is fine. You dont really need a portfolio/binder and the playmat is merely cosmetic as the surfaces you play one are usually clean and smooth enough and you are using sleeves anyway.
      Total cost about 5€.

    • @Flashpoint-xe2gb
      @Flashpoint-xe2gb 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +JuQmadrid those sleeves are utter trash. i used them when i was a new player. i do not recommend. get ultra pro sleeves for cheap

    • @JuQmadrid
      @JuQmadrid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +MTGElite33 They are good enough if you are a new player who most likely wont have many expensive cards.
      I keep using them myself on decks I dont expect to give a lot of use or if I planed to dismantle it in afew games.
      I bought four of the commander 15 decks and I sleved them with the 1€ ones (wich happen to be ultra pro) because otherwise I would have to spend about 24€ on sleves, enough to buy another deck.

    • @epiccarl1
      @epiccarl1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +koskey06 Brian's suggesting that someone should pay $60 for the accessories, not hundreds.

  • @TheDemko
    @TheDemko 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Professor, my wife and I saw your original video on the KMC Hypermats, and purchased them for our standard decks. You're absolutely right, in the fact that they tear much less frequently than a lot of other sleeve types, but I wanted to point out that people who do a lot of mash-type shuffling want to be careful with them, as there is a structural weakness on the sleeves on the bottom corners of the sleeves. We've lost quite a few of the KMCs recently, due to the sleeves ripping in the corners.
    I did some additional testing, on my own, and was able to fairly easily break 9 out of the 10 sleeves I tried to break, simply by putting a bit of pressure on the INSIDE bottom corners of the sleeves, which leads me to believe there is an underlying weakness there. I have no idea if you want to conduct this testing yourself, but just wanted to make you aware of my independent testing. Mash shufflers BEWARE!

  • @dakhwon
    @dakhwon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    For a few actual life hacks:
    -Bring cash with you to prereleases or LGS events. There's always that perpetually broke guy that will sell good cards for much less than buylist price for entry fee.
    -Unless you 100% have a decklist that the card is slotting into, always trade away the 1-2 Chase cards in a set at the prerelease. They almost never are the actual set all star (Remember Ruinous Skaab? Temporal Mastery? Aurelia's Fury? these were all $35 cards at prerelease time. Same goes for foil gameday top 8 cards.
    -When someone declares they're quitting the game and sells of all their cards, ask them what they did with their deck boxes, or be ready to offer. I snagged 4 of the nice Ultra Pro Satin boxes for $10 that way. Stores will shell out for cards, but rarely other items.

  • @Chrysaries
    @Chrysaries 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally recommend those Ultra Pro deckboxes in flimsier plastic. They are very affordable and fit the amount of cards you're most likely to have in the beginning: 60. The Satin Tower will have cards scrambling around inside until over 100 cards are in there. Unless you live in a rain forest, the regular Ultra Pro deck boxes will do the job just fine for standard, modern, pauper and other 60-card formats!

    • @ProtagonistOfficial

      I personally love the Satin Tower as I have broken pretty much every one of the fragile plastic ones. Well I also live in a rain forest so that might affect something as well.

      +John Nilsson (Chrysaries) They can also fit your sideboard with left over room for a few tokens or something. I think you can get the 5 mana colors on Amazon for like 7-8$, and they're usually only like 2.50 at your LGS

    Good idea, 'Tis the season. I do recommend getting a crate for a new player. Whether it be that monthly draft crate you talked about or the channel fireball one. I did like the cardboard crack counterspell sleeves with its evolution of man. I would recommend any box with dividers that holds sleeved cards as opposed to a deck box

    One thing i would recommend for truely new players, especially those who might not live close enough to a LGS, is on amazon you can find a combo pack of a BCW 100 card plastic deck box and 100 ct BCW sleeves for $7 to 8 USD including shipping (2 day shipping with prime in most cases!) The box is functional though the sleeves are definitely on the flimsy side, but for 7 bucks for both its a really really hard deal to beat. Note that the lighter color sleeves tend be be a bit see through on the back. Again you are getting what you pay for here with the cheap sleeves (box is pretty good actually though) but for a new player its a hell of a deal.

    kiki chord has a very good matchup against twin. This is because kiki chord's combo of rest ang/ kiki is a turn slower than exarch/twin, which means casting twin on exarch could lead to resto flickering the exarch and then proceeding to cast kiki on the next turn

    Here are some "actual" magic life hacks. Store your deck in your iPhone box. Super strong and doesn't come apart. Holds dice as well. Since starting I bought a fat pack or two to get a solid land base and packs to crack. These boxes make great card storage spots. Haven't needed any playmats since I sleeve my cards. As for sleeves, you should spring the 5-10$ for your main deck. As a starter chances are you wont have anymore than one or two decks to play. Also buy singles to improve your deck. Maybe a fat pack or two every release for the joy of getting new cards / opening packs without breaking your bank.

    what you need:
    -at least 1 deckbox
    -a playmat (seriously you need one.)
    -storage boxes for your cards and dice. (personally I like the deckbuilder's toolkit and fat pack boxes)

    • @armon9555
      @armon9555 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swam playmats are unimportant for beginners. If you’re so scared of putting your SLEEVED cards on a table take out a piece of paper and use it as a mat lol.

    Important to mention that the 3-ring binder needs to be D-ring and not O-ring. I did not know this and stored some cards in O-ring binders for over a decade, thankfully there were no issues but I think it's because the binder was not completely full.

    • @Evil_Chronic

      Not really that hard. If you want budget items that don't last, choose ultra pro. Other wise if not follow what the professor says.

    • @N00bsNxtDoor
      @N00bsNxtDoor 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christian Aguanno Ultra pro is the "budget" alternative. To be honest though, I ignore all the bad gradings of Ultra pro because I've never had them tear, rip, etc. As long as you don't shuffle like a poker player they last. I've had mine on the same decks for like 4 years

    • @christianaguanno3834
      @christianaguanno3834 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +N00bsNxtDoor Well it just makes no sense that there is no "life hacks" Like instead of buying a mousepad and spending the $ on that just get a playmat and use it for both. Or for example those Cardboard cases that cost like 1$ or whatever. give a shout out that they can hold a deck when sleeved. Just didn't feel like the biggest advice for a new player

    Your videos got me to jump back into Magic after a 15 year hiatus. My girlfriend is an elementary school teacher and last week she was developing a lesson plan to explain the concept of critical reasoning to her 5th grade students. I mentioned Magic the Gathering off the cuff and broke out a couple of my decks after dinner. She ended up teaching a lesson on how to prioritize decision-making, using power, toughness and life totals and which creature was the biggest threat. It went over really well and one of her students even said "Wow, Ms XYZ, I didn't know you played Magic!". So, in a round-about way, we have you to thank planting the seeds of knowledge in her students using the power of Magic the Gathering. Thanks, professor!
    Edit: I also showed her this video a couple days ago and I may yet be turning her into an up and coming planeswalker!

I keep 20 dimes to use as counters in there too, may not be ideal but it works
