- Chameleons make terrible pets, right? For some people a chameleon is not a great option but with their amazing colour and independently moving eyes the alure is obvious. But what if there was a much better chameleon option? Let's talk about Chameleons vs Cuban False Chameleons!

Would you ever keep a chameleon or a false chameleon?
after I get my hog nose potentially a false chameleon
Adam when are you going to setup up the subscription thingy through TH-cam?
If I had the time and money, sure. But with my life, my hands are full between my ball python AND my cockatiel.
No, had 3 that lived long but see my post above.
I have a CFC and he's fantastic. They have an amazing personality. Very funny lizards.
I had a panther and he was wonderful. I didn’t think it was that much work (but then I have dogs, cats and a large macaw), I misted his enclosure several times a day. He learned while I was misting to come and drink through the mesh from my sprayer. I used a fogger (which to be fair constantly clogged, but that was OK) and when he was in his youth and middle age I fed him crickets and silkworms with tongs, and then in his old age, I fed him exclusively hornworms from tongs (so a bit pricey in his final year) When his balance started to go, I simply put up Hammocks so he wouldn’t hurt himself if he fell in the day or in the night when I was asleep. He had a lovely, big enclosure. He was extremely social and honestly quite enjoyed coming out for a visit - If I just put my hand gently inside the enclosure, he would wander over and hop onto it.
Yes, I did have to take him to the vet a couple times, but so what ?! I have to take everything else I have to a vet. I travelled with him, and he simply had another enclosure at the cottage.
I miss him dreadfully. That being said, you are right, the shorter lifespan was heartbreaking even though I bought him as a juvenile adult (around 1 yr old) and I got six years out of him. It wasn’t enough.
Now I have an ornate Uromastyx
My Cham seems like yours . He’s a old man now and I have started putting hammocks up as he has started loosing his balance a lot
I consider myself extremely lucky for getting a chameleon as my first reptile and keeping her for 7 years, back then I didn't know vets existed for reptiles so I never took her, It probably helps that I had wanted a chameleon for almost 5 years before I got one watching care guides and reptile videos in general. I will definitely be more prepared for the next chameleon I get.
We had 3 chameleons. One died of old age and the other 2 lived for 4 to 7 years.. However. the experience was so expensive and time consuming that I got s Redfoot Tortoise! That was 33 years ago and Spud is the best reptile I have ever owned. Gets along with family and family dogs. I agree totally with your video. I love Chameleons but will never own another.
I’d LOVE to get a few RedFoots!! But I’m 61 and I don’t know of anyone that could take them when I’m gone. 😢🐢
@@loriw2661 He's In the will. I am 75 and my youngest son wants Spud. Did not realize they can live that long. There is a lot of conflicting information out there. Also, we live in New Hampshire. Spud has a room!!!!! He is a great pet and was very close to our Chihuahua. He has outlived 3 dogs and it is sad.
@@loriw2661 Yep, 61 here also. Just bought a Rosy Boa which can live to 30 years old. Figured if I was ever going to get a reptile that lives more than 10 years or so I better do it soon.
58 here. I have a year old BTS. My grandson will be his owner eventually. I hope to outlive my CFC and geckos.
Can you tell me why is expensive? I’m looking to get one
Working at Petsense bt Tractor Supply... our veiled has been with us so long, I'm honestly debating getting her myself...
I must say, your videos are definitely helpful and informative.
Thank you very much, keep up the great work! 👍
Adam...you just get better and better! This was GREAT!
THANK YOU...
thanks so much!
Yayyy new video!!!🎉 I recently got into reptiles/amphibians, and have been loving your channel!
PS, greetings all the way from Texas
Awesome! Thank you!
I love my CFC. I wanted one since I saw Clint's Reptiles video on them. I was going to get another Gargoyle gecko so I had the setup ready. But when I went into the Reptile shop to pick out my garg they had a CFC. It went home with me.
I so enjoy your videos!!!
The false chameleon is adorable. Never seen them before. Thank you for sharing.
they sure are cute!
I absolutely love false chameleons or red throated anole so much! Great video Adam and can’t wait to see what you have next
Sharing this with my son. He has a Jackson’s! Thanks Adam!
very cool!
Thank you for the content
So nervous to get a chameleon. They're so very delicate and sensitive.
they sure can be
such a awesome lizard 🔥 glad you talked about these.
Thank you for educating me.
Any time
I am glad you finally got a false chameleon! They are a amazing! So underrated!
they sure are
The day my Veiled passed absolutely destroyed me ( he was a rescue and I had to nurse him back to health and he grew to about 20 inches… he was so quirky haha, truly loved my time with Loki ) … But this lizard looks soooo cool! If I didn’t already have another reptile, I might be tempted by a false chameleon
Informative video. Could you do a video on the Publean Milk Snake, please? 🙂👍
I love how chameleons and anoles walk, it's oddly cute
so cute eh
I love their little clampy feet.
In the 1980s we called the Green Anoles (Anolis carolinensis) American Chameleons. I had several as a kid, I even raised some babies, because the females arrived pregnant and laid eggs.
I love Anoles, they are all-around great pets if captive-bred.
I would never keep a "old World" Chameleon, everything you said is right. Real Chameleons are just too fragile, live very short lives, and are prone to health issues even under the best of care.
I love the false chameleons and their giant heads lol
I keep parsons... Oshaunessy.... and oustalets... they take a lot more skill for sure. Theyre an avanced lizard! But fun if you take the time to learn very fun!
we found them all in Madagascar and they were all so cool!!
@@WickensWickedReptiles ya i saw all your videos lol. And Dav and Bills....Totally awesome!
I need help ! Had 2 one just died female have a 6 ft tall habitat 8 ft wide and 3 ft deep . Male won’t eat the parsons
Chameleons are the coolest reptiles but too delicate
Please please please do a care guide for the false chameleon. I’ve loved them for a while but the lack of info around them makes me hesitating. So pleeeeeeease?
It would be amazing if Adam could come down here to Australia and do some videos focusing on the crazy wildlife we have here.
that intro is sick
Another great video, I don't even have to watch it I already know
I appreciate that
Great video. I had a chameleon about 10 years ago. Tuns of work.
Thanks 👍
Thank you very much ❤
Very interesting content.
Glad you enjoyed it
Might be adopting one of these from petsmart soon. Figured I'd get their tank and care set up now
Your videos are awesome
Thank you so much 😀
Great man
I have a veilled one and hes amazing. He lets me hold him alot, ive had his for 4years! I love him
Good one.
I’ll happily watch any video about chameleons even if it’s a video on why they’re not the best 😂😂 I get asked pretty frequently about Cuban false chameleon care and have to remind people true chameleon care is very different lol
to be fair this whole "such and such sucks" series is just propaganda for these animals being awesome anyway haha
i was honestly considering a veild chameleon, but after watching this video. I now want a cuban false chameleon insteadbecause i probably could not keep up with a True Chameleon.
Thanks Adam for all the tips.
when I was a kid, they used to sell Grewn Anoles as American Chameleons because they can turn from brown to green and back again , of course the knowledge of reptiles wasn't like it is now with 3rd graders asking for reptiles by their Scientific Names while the Pets Mart employee stands there with a blank look on his face scratching his chin in udder confusion, saying "wha..."wha..."uhhh...?"
You are the best TH-camr ever wicked wickens reptile have a super day have a great day have a nice day wicked wickens reptile
Wow, thank you!
Our favorite, double V!! Always the kindest commenting on every channel I enjoy!! Have a great day back Double V!!!
I don't want to keep a chameleon but I'm really glad other people do, they are so cool and alien. Like seriously how are they even real???
insane eh!
I'm for easy lol thanx Adam for a great video!!!
I love this species of Anole they almost always walk out to you. They are the most socal Anole species I've encountered so far.
We need a room tour, room tour, room tour!!
I think the false chameleons are way better for most people. Their head reminds me of a dinosaur, and they can be in a communal setup together. They seem like a solid option for people, especially if they are newer keepers
You should name your Cuban False Chameleon Dratini!!
wicked name!
What a cool little dude. You should name this one Percy ❤
I remember I asked a few months ago if you’d get one and you said no lol… love this video ✌️
enjoy!
I've had a Jackson's and now a veiled. They are a lot more work than any of my other pets. I don't know how old my veiled is due to buying her at an expo but hoping she has a long life. But I am thinking she may be my last one -are there any other reptiles that can be kept in the screen cage she's in? Mine's fully bioactive and has so many beautiful plants that I hate to think of just dismantling it after her.
I’ve been thinking of getting a false chameleon. Yours seems to be ok with handling. Are they more open to it than regular cams? Will they hang out?
Agreed, and it makes me really sad to know that i'll never have the space/money/time to keep a chameleon. Lucky me, geckos are awesome too ;)
maybe one day!
I actually bought my first chameleon at narbc Tinley park on Saturday! He’s a cute little veiled chameleon, much harder to care for than my geckos but much less needy than my monitors! My only other “chameleon-like” reptile is my Cuban knight anole
very cool!
I was there too, it was interesting to see what reptiles have waxed and waned in popularity since I got my beardie almost 13 years ago. Crested geckos seem to be reaching market saturation.
I wanted a veiled years back when they seemed more popular, but I don't think I'd have enough time to put towards taking care of one.
@@thebenior I got quite a few herps there, I got a bull snake, the veiled chameleon, a Solomon island ground boa, a Solomon island leaf frog, a hairy frog, a tiger leg monkey frog, and a few inverts. There were a lot of cool crestie morphs!
@@snakelizard2343 I mostly went for entertainment for my kids and to buy feeders. I am thinking about a western hognose snake when my bearded dragon passes away from old age; if I don't get a stackable enclosure. I only saw 2 western hognose snake breeders, but the show was pretty crowded.
@@thebenior I have a western hognose and beardie among my colony, highly recommend them!
I always wanted a chameleon, but where I live we miss electricity really really often.I have some tarantulas and a beardie and I had to buy a big generator because last time we didn’t have electricity for a good 3 days.It is already stressful not having electricity when you have children and animals that need care and you need to reorganize your whole house when that happen. That is the main reason I didn’t get a chameleon
I found out about False Chameleons from snake discovery and have wanted one for years. I'm trying to convince my Dad to let me get one if I can find a breeder in my area.
Wow
enjoy!
Great video! I have kept and bred Panther chameleons for several years now, and they are definitely not for every keeper. I wouldn’t trade them for Cuban false chameleons though!
Thanks for sharing!
I love the bearded anole so much. Adorable and goofy-looking. Creepy in the cutest way = crupey
I've seen so many Petstores get these guys in but aren't selling well but they are great.
very interesting!
Jackson's chameleons, at least in the area I'm from, are usually wild caught or farm bred. They're invasive to Florida and Hawaii, and that's where most of them are coming from.
Have you done any videos on deal with pest like snake mites
yep, on the channel, enjoy
My false chameleon lays eggs without a male present, they are avid drinkers and often need to be hand watered to avoid dehydration, along with misting twice daily to keep the humidity high.
I actually have both, a false and a veiled, and at least for me the care is very similar
So I have a much smaller collection but my beardie goes to the vet annually for a wellness check, just like my cats. She gets her parasite load checked, teeth examined, weight charted and observed if she's developed any MBD(which so far she has never had.) My snakes and cresties never go to the vet but I worry that they should. Would you be willing to make a video of reasonable expectations of taking reptiles to the vet?
so either the temperature drops, or the chameleon does. got it! lol
Hey man, definitely cannot agree anymore with everything that you said they definitely need to be missed . They need a fog machine feed them with tongs and treat them with the most carefully respect that you possibly can. And I think that we all can agree on what you have said here they make amazing pets, and I truly do appreciate you making this video along with others more than likely I hope.
I also do keep bearded anoles. And I have a female that lays unfertal eggs never being with a male. Her previous owner only new she was a female due to the fact that she was finding eggs.
I have two Cuban False Chameleons and they are pretty awesome and easy to care for. I did have to take one to the vet for a tail injury but that was either from his tank mate or hurt himself on something in the enclosure. Hard to tell.
Hi Adam
Hi Hannah
Yes, tough learning curve but once you get it down it's fairly easy. My biggest problem was egg bound females. I also don't have a lot of confidence in most vets when it comes to chameleons.
Doesn’t have a name yet is freaking adorable
he sure is!
Most Jackson’s still aren’t captive bred. Most come from Hawaii. Jackson’s are one of the hardest to find truly captive bred.
kind of sucks to open with "chameleons suck" like they're a product and not a living creature. makes one hell of a first impression of this channel
I feel like I've been called out. I just watched a video of you talking about a Jackson chameleon!!! They look really cool
Edit: I watched the video 😂 I hear you.... but I still love the look of a Jackson ❤
i have 2 and yes they are alot of work but worth it for the right people!!
for sure
I'm going to grab a beer and watch some Madagascar adventures
ehhhhhh!
Out of curiosity, what if two CFC that you have house together like to cluck at each other but r not aggressive??
I want to try to care for a chameleon at least once bc they are such incredible creatures, but I do agree they are not the easiest to care for
Would love a Mellers
very cool species!
ive got 2 love them set up lots money
i spent 1k on
It's pretty amazing they evolved independently moving eyes convergently with chameleons
crazy eh!
He looks like a Donnie to me. Hella cute 🥰
wicked name
Those suckers are sooo freaking cool. Kickass animal
And it isn't even what I thought it was lol
I'm leaving a comment, but have nothing to say. Just wanted to help boost WWR in the TH-cam algorithm. Thank you
Thanks for that!
I love Cuban False Chameleons! I might be an outlier, but I've never really wanted a true chameleon. Cuban False Chameleons on the other hand are on my list of dream species to own.
I love false chameleons they r so much fun!!!!!!
Oh my god, I know there are tons of species of chameleons. I don't know how many are really kept his pets, but I'll tell you whenever I would go to Petco or PetSmart to get something for the kitty. I like to look at the chameleons and it's almost always available chameleon. It's occasionally a Jackson's but I don't think I've ever seen anything else at one of those. I think I saw something mislabeled as a panther chameleon once, but it definitely wasn't a panther chameleon
The life expediency of a chameleon sucks. They are beautiful and colorful.
agreed
Not relevant to this vid, but I have a juvenile ball python and she loves to escape. I have her in a 40 gallon that I found cheap, and bought a lid from a pet store that fits. We have put weights on the lid, towels to close off any gaps but she still finds a way out… Any pointers.
A friend of mine had Jackson Chameleons, one of them hated me.
I wish I had known about these before I got my veiled chameleon don't get me wrong my chameleon is pretty cool but they do need a lot of work with humidity etc and it was probably a month after getting mine I was watching a reptile video and found out about the false chameleon and the false chameleon is pretty cool and more handable where my chameleon won't let me hold it at all he'll eat out of my hand and that's it but I'm planning on getting one I just hope I can find one and I just wanted to say so far I've not had any problems with my chameleon but that's thanks to all the TH-cam videos about care and I've been able to provide it with the best care that I've been able to learn
Very interesting video, thanks.
I heard on another channel (one that does reptile rescue) that chameleons don’t like to be picked up or touched. Someone surrendered a chameleon (veiled, I think) that was in such bad shape that it looked like a piece of burned paper. It was hard to watch, BUT they nursed it back to health, so happy ending! Anyway, they stated that besides requiring high levels of care that chameleons don’t like contact with their keepers.
My dream pet! I really want to get one of these.
absolutely!
Me planned name is Guanahatabey, the last hunter gatherer tribe of Cuba, yeah I’m a nerd.
Soooo... Back in the 90s, my mom kept a pair of CBB veiled chameleons. The female lived 5 years and never went to the vet, the male almost hit 10 without ever going to the vet. Even with her terrible husbandry (we kept the male in a wire rabbit hutch).
My mom used up all the chameleon keeping luck in the world. No one else will ever have this experience with their chameleons.
Thanks for making this video, dude! Cuban falses, in my experience, have truly won me over. They're surprisingly easy to breed when given an awesome bioactive enclosure, easier to cohab together (obviously, never 2 males), easy to care for, and so much more. A much better alternative to true chameleons, in my opinion!
how long do they live? ive seen 3-6 years but also 8-15 im confused
@Connor J Casto With proper care, they can live upwards to 15 years under captive conditions, and it's certainly possible given what more experienced keepers and breeders have told me. Averages are just averages, especially when you put in many factors (i.e. humidity, diet, lighting and heating, individual animal, species/subspecies, etc).
Too late, already have a chameleon! I’m not sure if I would ever got another one though, I’ve already gone to the vet three times for this one. (Despite having a good setup)
yo, how are your cherry heads doing? I would love a care guide for these guys!
they are great. I'll do a video on them in the summer when they are back outside
God bless
We have a female Panther Chameleon. She is a little over 3 years old and still going well considering some issues and several vet visits in the past. Very difficult to care for and I do not recommend Chameleons for beginners.
Luv mine...
name "this thing" rodrick lol
