Against a dangerous opponent like Escalera, Arguello was very relaxed and patient. He slowly broke Escalera down. Arguello kept his cool despite Escalera using illegal backhand punches. The ref warned Escalera several times for throwing backhand punches, but he did not take away any points. Arguello was a great champion.
I don't know what Cosell was seeing in those last few rounds, but Arguello hit him with the best shot of the fight at about the 42:16 mark in the 13th round. He hit him first with a right, then came back with a left that snapped Escalera's head back, and Cosell didn't even acknowledge it. And that was probably where the last cut came from. Arguello was completely dominating the 13th round. Also, that flurry Cosell was so appreciative of Escalara's only one of those punches even landed and he said Arguello was hurt from it. Only the first punch landed and a lot of the force went into the shoulder, but it glanced the face and that probably was what cut Arguello. The next 3 punches were wild or were blocked.
Looking back, it's amazing how bad an announcer Cosell was, he really knew nothing about boxing technique and was always rambling on about something meaningless when the fighter he wasn't rooting for landed punches. The worst was many times Escalera would miss with long looping rights then try to backhand Arguello as he regained his balance, an obvious foul, Arguello would complain to the referee then Cosell woujd tell the audience that Arguello was complaining about headbutts. Boxing on TV in the late 70's and early 80's was fantastic, so many great fights and fighters but the broadcasts became so much better when CBS put Gil Clancy and Angelo Dundee on as color commentators.
Pryors coach asked one of the second to give him the special bottle and pointed at the bottle of "water" it was wrapped in a white towel bottle of water in the last few rounds. It seems after Pryor started drinking from the special bottle during the last 2 rounds Pryor seem to be faster than Alexis, throwing punches non stop at super hyper speed beyond the punches he threw before the last two rounds before he beat Arguello who was overwhelmed by the speed in which Pryor was boxing. There were raised questions about the Special Water Bottle and it's content. Pryor was drinking water from a different bottle before the last two rounds. Arguello was never beaten like that. Just saying...
@@robertogomez8368If you watch the fight again in between rounds 2 and 3 Panamá Lewis asks for the other bottle. That would indicate that Panamá Lewis juiced up Pryor at least twice. And to be fair, I give Pryor the benefit of the doubt by saying that he probably wasn't aware of Panamá Lewis cheating.
Crazy how these ole warriors, pretty much last of the Mohicans so to speak, would go hard for 15 rounds from opening bell. Today they pace themselves to save it for the "championship rounds" of a 12 rounder 😏😏🤔. Salvador Sanchez, Alexis Arguello, hell watch Duran Leonard 1, that was alot of action over the 15 rounds.
He was magnificent, wasn't he? Definitely flawed as a fighter......DEFENSE. But he could get outboxed for 13 rounds and finally time a combo to either drop an opponent and get the decision, or knock them right the F out. Had lungs for DAYS..... My only criticism of him, was he was too patient for his own good. Always confident he'd figure his opponent out in the championship rounds. Thats why he lost or almost lost a few Non-Title 10round tune-up fights......(JL Ramirez)
Musica, I don't know I if I saw your comment before today, or whether someone else or you first said it, but it's exactly true. I was watching this fight and saw his calmness, explosiveness, how he could always be "In the pocket" and ready to throw. I thought, This guy's the Bruce Lee of boxing. Then I read your comment and wonder if I stole it. I think that he had pretty good defense. His head movement was good, his hands were very often in the right position. So many of those grand champions. When a guy gets to 50 fights and keeps improving, that's special to see. Those days are gone now. You're career is over when you get to 50 fights.
Escalera wasn't complaining about a Headbutt in 13th like Cosell says.. he backhanded Arquello and was stopping to apologize.. 42:38 the huge cut over right eye is from the monster hook Arguello landed a few seconds b4. 42:16
What fight was Cosell watching from round 9 on? Except for one punch that caused the cut under Arguellos right eye, Escalera was getting the crap beaten out of him. When Alfredo backhanded Alexis for the 10th time right after Arguello had opened a 4th, new and huge cut on his cheek Cosell said the action was stopped due to a butt by Arguello that had caused the new cut. Not one of Howard's best performances
Alexis Arguello is a real gentleman in and out of the ring.. Very humble and classy with nukes on those skinny arms. Despite what happened later in his life he is still a hero for me
Panama Lewis later went to prison for removing the padding from the boxing gloves of one of his fighters before a fight and, I believe was expelled from boxing. I have no doubt that something was up in the Pryor fight. Lewis proved to be a dishonest conman.
Was Alexis prime. What happened to Alexis happened to dozens of millionaire boxers, who came from poor homes. The millions kept them away from the iron discipline of the gym (even Canelo didn`t escape from this syndrome) . For this reason he showed less defense against Pryor (in addition to the fact that this was doped) and his next three fights he were even very slow and imprecise. But in his prime is considered the best junior lightweight of the 20 century
Styles make fights. Bad matchup for Arguello. Duran s way too quick and strong inside. Arguello..slow starter.....not quick enough with either hands or feet to keep him at punching range.
ARGUELLO, great as he was, couldnt beat Duran IMO, but it'd be a helluva rumble for awhile,..say eight or nine rounds i think. Roberto at his prime lightweight was too quick, and an even harder puncher, let alone defensive abilities. THIS fight here!....wow what a rumble!...great fight.

Arguello might have lasted the distance, but Duran was too mobile on the inside & had too many skills for Arguello - slick movers like Leonard & Benitez tended to give Duran the most problems. Would have been something to see though.......
As much as I like Alexis I don't think he would have beaten Duran. Would have been a tough fight, Duran possibly a stoppage in the last couple of rounds.
As great as Duran was at lightweight, and I truly was a fan, when people talk about this dream fight they seem to forget a few things. Duran has a well earned legend. However, at lightweight it's a little overblown. I know that's sacrilege but the numbers bare me out. His toughest fights, and the best he fought, were Ken Buchanan, Ray Lampkin, and Estaban DeJesus. He flat out refused to honor the rematch with Buchanan. Lampkin was 29-3-1 and had NEVER beaten a major fighter. And DeJesus beat Duran and dropped him twice in 3 fights. DeJesus was a good fighter but had no where near the power of Arguello. Arguello beat every major fighter, that would fight him, in 3 weight classes. Duran could maul Arguello on the inside but I also see a possibility of Arguello hammering Durans chin with a straight right the way Hearns did... wish the fight would have happened, would have been an amazing central-american rivalry too
Cosell was always an a$$. He's describing a fight that isn't happening.. Escalera is missing constantly in round 12 and is getting tagged, yet Cosell is talking about him being all over Arguello but he's missing 4 out of 5 punches and getting hit. LMAO
@@Thonolan000”My god, they called it a draw!” - On Hagler/Antuofermo While I do think Hagler won that fight, he later admitted he was more pensive than he should’ve been after 8, which allowed Vito to narrow the scorecards. I would like to have seen the cards of the judges when it was stopped. If the tape had continued I think Cosell would have gotten and told the TV audience .
Despite frequently mixing up the two fighters and taking liberty with his vowels (Arguella, Escalero, Porto Rica), Howard Cosell is still by far my favorite sports commentator.
Bro!! Duran was a Volume puncher just like Pryor, but with way more experience and quality of opposition!! The ONLY great fighter Pryor beat was Arguello....period!! Not that impressive either....Alexis was a goddamn FEATHERWEIGHT Who had 80 fights under his belt... Had looked slower and less powerful at Lightweight (much less Junior Welterweight) Pryor was a 2 hit wonder....beat Alexis twice and Snorted All Pablo Escobar's cocaine off hooker's asses. Pryor is considered one of the best Jr. Welters of All time BUT not considered an ALL TIME GREAT. 👎
@@aduarte8057 Pryor was NO ATG. Seems like the Age of the Internet has deluded some of his old fans and New ones. He is considered one of the top dominant Jr. Welters of all-time.....but that's MUCH different from ATG status. He just didn't have the # of fights, or the longevity of an ATG. Pryor beat an ATG.....Twice, in Arguello, but Arguello was nearing his end plus he was nowhere near the puncher he had been at the lighter weights. To reach ATG status, Pryor needed great opposition....he needed Duran or Leonard or Hearns.....He needed titles in multi- divisions. Here's the thing misleading all you guys who argue that he IS an ATG: He was not considered all-time by the experts of HIS day......BUT they did consider him a LEGENDARY TALENT.....meaning, he had the POTENTIAL to be a multi-division dominant Champ, and they recognized this, BUT he never fulfilled that Potential. Sorry man, I know people think he was the SHIT, and HE WAS!!! But he just didn't have the "Resume" and stopped WAY TOO SOON due to his partying/drug issues. I LOVED the Hawk, but he's just a legend, a tale of what "might have" been. People on the internet have blown him up to All time great status, because of his exciting style and his record.....that's it.
@@bakgammon He was fucking amazing....BUT he never fought anyone to test that shaky chin of his (he was dropped by a few fighters, Cervantes being one). I GUARANTEE you if Duran or Hearns had hit him, they WOULD have tested his resolve. If you watch the amateur fight between him and Tommy Hearns, HE was the veteran at the time, and Tommy was SOOO little & skinny, but Hearns Cracked him one or two good times and he was Stunned. Fast forward 5 years after Hearns built some muscle, and I dont know if Aaron could've taken those shots. I think Leonard would've beaten him too.

Duran could maul Arguello on the inside but I also see a possibility of Arguello hammering Durans chin with a straight right the way Hearns did... wish the fight would have happened, would have been an amazing central-american rivalry too
@@dltguitar6532 Panama vs. Nicaragua.
Escalera put on a good show, he would have been very disappointed not to go the distance.
Valiente Escalera. Recuerdo vino a Nicaragua a promocionar la pelea y subió con una culebra, dijo que iba a destrozar a Argüello y que va el flaco lo doblegó a domicilio
A 15 round championship fight. Boxing lost a lot when they changed to 12 round fights.
Wow alexis got a way with some Shots in round 8
Good 👍
Exelente boxeador
I am puertorican but i am glad that Arguello shut up the loudmouth of Escalera!!
Esos guantes paresen manoplas de catcher...
Well that was a fishy stoppage. Just as Esculara is coming on and getting the upper hand, they stop the fight.
Arguello is one of my fav of all time, but, even I wondered the same thing... seems too convenient
@@maxhitikos My favorite too. Luckily they rematched and this time Arguello left no doubt.
They are holding up Arguello's hand at the end and he's looking around like he's not sure whats going on
Because Escalera sustained a nasty cut between his upper lip and his nose
@@burtonrivera5253 Arguello almost split open escalera's lips in 2 pieces
I think there was a strong possibility that Pryor was 'juiced' in both fights,
Why the sandinistas murder this good human being with complicity of his wife... I'm still wondering
Because he was going to defect from their party and he knew too much about their election frauds. That simple.
Barry Mccoy wow. I missed that one. I knew he died tragically yet didn’t know they murdered him. You have a good TH-cam on that one ☝🏼?
Frank Gifford daying Escalera can take you out with one punch he means Arguello is the harder puncher
Cosell was always an a$$. He's describing a fight that isn't happening.. Escalera is missing constantly in round 12 and is getting tagged, yet Cosell is talking about him being all over Arguello but he's missing 4 out of 5 punches and getting hit. LMAO
Cosell was among the very worst boxing commentators that I've ever seen. Possibly the most annoying human being that ever lived.
@@Thonolan000”My god, they called it a draw!” - On Hagler/Antuofermo
While I do think Hagler won that fight, he later admitted he was more pensive than he should’ve been after 8, which allowed Vito to narrow the scorecards.
Same as against Duran, which logic suggested shouldn’t have been as close as it was, so Marvin was feeling some pressure?
I would like to have seen the cards of the judges when it was stopped. If the tape had continued I think Cosell would have gotten and told the TV audience .
Arguello en la 2da casi lo mata
130
Bull shit stop the fight
Despite frequently mixing up the two fighters and taking liberty with his vowels (Arguella, Escalero, Porto Rica), Howard Cosell is still by far my favorite sports commentator.
Cosell was a drunk.
@ Wanda Landowska : and by far my favorite sports commentator.
Cosell was clueless when it came to boxing.
@marcxopoco : and by far my favorite sports commentator.
@@ArkyMalarkey yes, Cowell was wonderful. The best.
Corey roberts, i loved to watch arguello fight. He was exciting!!
Looks like Pryor...but DON'T have Pryor ENERGY...NON STOP BANGING! Pryor would've beat Duran up.
Bro!! Duran was a Volume puncher just like Pryor, but with way more experience and quality of opposition!! The ONLY great fighter Pryor beat was Arguello....period!!
Not that impressive either....Alexis was a goddamn FEATHERWEIGHT
Who had 80 fights under his belt...
Had looked slower and less powerful at Lightweight (much less Junior Welterweight) Pryor was a 2 hit wonder....beat Alexis twice and Snorted All Pablo Escobar's cocaine off hooker's asses. Pryor is considered one of the best Jr. Welters of All time
BUT not considered an ALL TIME GREAT. 👎
@@lemankurtz8950 The Hawk is definitely an all time great. You talking out the side of your neck.
@@aduarte8057 Pryor was NO ATG. Seems like the Age of the Internet has deluded some of his old fans and New ones. He is considered one of the top dominant
Jr. Here's the thing misleading all you guys who argue that he IS an ATG:
He was not considered all-time by the experts of HIS day......BUT they did consider him a LEGENDARY TALENT.....meaning, he had the POTENTIAL to be a multi-division dominant Champ, and they recognized this, BUT he never fulfilled that Potential.
I'm not a Duran fan at all but Pryor was a sloppy windmill and while he was a feinting aggressive master technician
Iate arguellovs late sanchez who would win?
Corey roberts, arguello, was master boxer. He was sadly killed, in 2009!!
