Weller's vocals are awesome here. I always felt his voice sounded the best in the TSC years and his first two solo albums -- that was primetime for his singing.
yea totally agree - Paul still had some velvet as well as edge in his voice in his 20's - by his 30's the ciggies had taken their toll - I really enjoy all TSC stuff - the solo stuff sounds more affectation. In interviews Paul has said his voice has got better over the years , but I agree with you these years were the golden period for the full range of his voice ... (reply copied here to the correct place 4 years later ! )
Has there ever been a better single rejected and refused release? This is a deep house masterpiece as good as most of what was coming out of Chicago, Philly etc
From the mid-80's until the early 90's or so, the Japanese TV company FCI either recorded or transmitted live "Hit Studio International" from the UK (mostly from studios in London) to Japan only. I worked on most of these productions, including this one and as I recall the Style Council recorded two numbers, although I can't remember what the second one was. The comparison with Curtis Mayfied is apt because he was also featured in this programme playing his latest single "Homeless" which, I think, was the last time he performed in the UK before his debilitating accident some time later. Mayfield and Weller also performed a number together, although I don't recall what it was. Sometimes the performers would play live, other times the track would be recorded first and then mimed to playback, as in the case of "Sure Is Sure". They Style Council were regular performers on 'HSI' and once played on a live transmission in pouring rain to Japan from outside the old GLC County Hall by the Thames on one of the shows some years before this one, although I've never seen any footage of that performance on TH-cam. The same goes for most of the 'HSI' productions featuring a whole host of artistes from over the years.

haha....i luv watchin pw mime....its fantastic...i was at the albert hall gig in .....erm...89 i think...it was hideous at the time...for us mods anyway but listening back this is a good souly song...groovy but doesnt he look uncomfortable...rock on paul...youve woke up the nation yet again
Nice to see this again! I have to say, although a lot of fans bashed this music/LP when it was not (actually) released at the time, I just love this song whenever it pops up every now again on the radio. Maybe not THE style council period but: still a great song. Also a great tune for putting down 'the right foot' when driving in your car on the highway :-)..... watch out when humming along and putting up the driving speed because of it : it's gonna cost you; Sure is Sure ! :-)
Great video. I'm fairly sure this was from early 1990, after TSC had effectively disbanded (there was probably a hefty financial incentive to perform this one-off gig), and a few months later Weller would be touring solo with the short-lived Paul Weller Movement. This is such a great song, with a final real blast of passion. I thought it was lip-synched to the record, but the ad-libbing at the end isn't on the recording, so not entirely sure. I don't think Weller's voice ever sounded better than it did here.
According to the book 'Mr Cool's Dream: The Complete History Of The Style Council' by Iain Munn, it was lip-synched. And you can see at around 1:22 that Weller misses a little part of the song.
Wow thanks for this, I've never seen it before. Great track and good performance though I suspect they're lip syncing? It sounds that way, especially with the fade out at the end and it doesn't even look like the guitars are plugged in.
Steve had officially left the band long before this. He was playing with other people like Nick Heyward. He came back into the fold to do one off performances of Style Council material with Mick,Paul and Camelle. He even did a performance with just Paul as Style Council in 1990.
Whilst I quite like this, Paul wasn't ever gonna be Curtis and the musical path he'd took was leading up a cul-de-sac. Still, he came back with lots more tools in his toolbag, better, stronger and revitalised.
Dry your eyes
They will call
Sure is sure
We'll be one
As you know it's been a
Long time coming
I don't feel the
Changes down to luck
Sure is sure
Sure as the world is turning all
Sure is sure
Cos you're mine
Now or never
You best believe
We shall be free
We will run to
You and me
It's alright
Don't despair
Time has come
Sure is sure
We'll be gone
As you know it's been a
Long time coming
I don't feel the
Changes down to luck
Dry your eyes
Yes we'll hold our way
Sure is sure
There will come a day

I'm sure I've seen the footage of the GLC concert somewhere, possibly on here ?
The other track they performed was an oldie - The Whole Point of No Return.

I don't think it was the cigarettes that killed his range, I think it was the shouting, eventually it destroys your vocal cords.
Man, this song is beyond funky! Love the Style Council!

I still love this in 2020

I ADORE this song. fitting end to the group. soulful hope. its alright.
I honestly feel this is their best single. Weller's vocal on this is superb.
SoulStylistJukeBox yep, i agree. Stood him in good stead, for some great solo songs later on too!
Wow! That’s quite an opinion.
Nice to see this back on TH-cam. Nice to see the Style Council saved the best for last.
Shud have been final single
One of his greatest songs. If there is ever another career long retrospective, this should have a place (for sure :-)
This song should be released, its a shame it wasnt in the first place!!!
It's on the box set "The Complete Adventures of the Style Council" which has all the tracks from their unreleased "house" album.

How was this not a hit, as big as musical Freedom, Paul Simpson.
Amazing track, my all time fav
I mis my teens, this music was something else

Quite Good, 1st time seen this
House music before there was house music..

Che nostalgia del sound tipico degli style council...
Adoro questo pezzo adoro PW e nn so cosa darei per aver potuto vivere gli style Council in quegli anni❤
Certainly in the Weller top 10 in my eyes amigos
It's very depresive to see Weller so uncomfortable e unhappy....
R.I.P. The Style Council
@tubby61 LMAO! And they are a damn good band, Imagination. :-)
I am not a religious person AT ALL but this song makes me wanna testify. hands up and amen.
the Devil's Dandruff is a beast of a diet drug
素晴らしい曲だと思います。
WELLER WAS LISTENING TO CURTIS MAYFIELD BEFORE HE RECORED THIS.
My man was killing the black and white ivories!
Wonder what would have happened if Weller had released this song as his first solo single.
This one activated my kundalini!
That would be some good shit.
doesnt look like a broken man here
oh boy😗
Wow thanks for this, I've never seen it before. Great track and good performance though I suspect they're lip syncing?

Steve white looks like he knows it’s over though this is actually pretty good... great vocals by weller

How did Polydor reject this? Oh yeah I forgot music had been hijacked by the money machine..
Japan TV? Why? The last performance of Paul and cía., in Asia?
piano suigueira....bateria quase eletrônica...baixo quase digitado...

PW‘s lowest point. Luckily he recovered.
Possibly the last TSC performance
