Walter Plinge It seems to be getting worse because while the skills people need in their daily life are changing, most public school curriculums aren't.

Public Schools need more funding! not private. and now Trump is cutting 13% or 9,200,000,000 away from funding and giving 1,000,000,000 to vouchers which have shown to not work.

I was 17 in 10th grade and was failing because they switched to block scheduling so we saw our teacher every other day. My learning delay or whatever I had made it super hard for me. I went from making A and Bs to some Cs in 9th grade to mostly Ds and Fs in 10 grade. I cannot tell you how many times I cried. So I just dropped out and finally got my GED at 19 and entered college when I was 20. Schools dont like to help those who are struggling. Or when I was in school they didnt.

My guidance counselor in HS told me that the number one predictor for boys dropping out was, "They bought a car."
Suddenly they had to license it, pay for fuel and repairs and get insurance. At that point they needed to have an after-school job... Once they have a job, they don't feel the need to stay in school and drop out to work more. Unfortunately, not having a diploma really does hurt you badly in the workforce.

I had #8, a fear of school. It had to do with both separation anxiety and bullying at school, although I did get good grades. This completely changed once I got into college. By then I outgrew the anxiety of being away from my parents and I no longer worried about what my peers thought. So anyone that has this problem...you can get past it!

Holding kids back makes it harder for them to get ahead academically? So, for example, if a fifth grader is failing at his/her subjects we should push them forward and expect them to do well in sixth grade? Fuck that. If they couldn't understand the criteria they need help to make sure they actually get it before moving on. They don't need to be forced into learning things that are harder for them to comprehend.

For no. 24, sometimes teachers are left with no choice but to resign, especially after being given an unsatisfactory rating. This rating puts them at risk of losing their jobs. Student performance also plays a role on teacher ratings but there are teachers who do really try their best to educate their students.
For no. 19, I couldn't fully read until I learned Braille in the 4th grade. I'm about to graduate from university now.

They're usually quite happy to study because of the Gaokao exam system for streaming into university, the toughest exams in the world. The university in China you go to is more important in your career than your scholastic merit at that university in securing a good job. So Chinese students are happy to cram and burn the mid night oil for the very important Gaokao exam.

I enjoyed the video, as I do all the videos I've seen from this channel, but I found myself wanting a little more. For instance, how short *was* the shortest school year? When did it end and begin? There were a few facts that were kind of mentioned but blown by that I feel could have been unpacked a little bit more. When I was 12 I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (chronic pain, so when something should hurt some, it hurts a lot, when it shouldn't hurt, it still hurts some, like my nervous system is over dramatic), and by the time I was 16 I wasn't able to go to school physically at all. For a few years I went half days or every other day. I was homebound, which meant a teacher from the school came to my house (the school gave them extra money to) and spent at most 3 hours a week with me. I learned Spanish from a teacher who had never learned it (she had learned French) and math from someone who was even worse than I was at it. Homebound is mostly used when a student is really sick and expected to bounce back, like pneumonia or being in the hospital needing a surgery or something. No one had been on homebound for all of high school and managed to graduate on time in my state until I managed (just barely, if I'd had one incomplete, I'd have had to be a fifth year student), and no one has since.
To put a long story short, teachers teaching subjects they care or at least know a lot about and actually being in school is so important. The sense of structure you get, the sense of belonging of being in a peer group, learning how to navigate various social problems with others, they're all needed to transition to adulthood. If I could have been here, I would have benefitted. While being in school when I was able was difficult for me (not just the physical toll, but the ribbing people gave me about how I was sooo lucky to be sick, or because I was probably just faking to get out of going), there is a lot people learn in school that has nothing to do with the lesson plans. It may suck, and it may be broken, but the school system is there for a reason.

In school, I had problems. in seventh grade, I could barely spell simple words like "December" or "because" Then I dropped out and I went from what? like a 3rd grade reading level to an 8th grade reading level with in a few months. I got a better understanding of the world and I learned empathy. Something I wouldn't have learned in school due to how arrogant, disrespectful and bigoted the other kids were. So I'm a better person because I stopped going to school. If you're young, and reading this, don't decide to drop out just based off my comment. I'm one person, so just because things work out for me doesn't mean doing what I did will work out for you. I don't want to be the reason someones life got ruined. Just sharing my experience.

In my town in Australia there were school buses. They weren't yellow. They were just the normal town buses. You could also catch regular town buses. I usually walked being close enough or sometime rode my bike. Some students were chauffeured by their parents and some drove their own cars. That was in the 70s so I don't know what the situation is now.

It has been my observation that since the book came out "Why Johnny can't Read" many people have tried to improve education. The results are more medaling then help. One of the problems are here Children need to learn how to study and have a good place to do it. Often the child does not get the support at home. Teachers do not get the support they need. The high rate of teachers leaving the system is for this reason. If a teacher sends a child out of the class the then the teacher feels that that student is the problem or that he is making it worse. A school is not a place for agendas it is a place for learning. Elementary is called elementary for a reason, it is basic.

I could read and write when I was three and a half. When I started school aged five, I was equal to a ten year old in knowledge. When I was at Secondary school [age 11-16], I did no homework, and if I was bored, I went fishing. I passed every exam I took. I detested school - most of the things I learnt, I did so from my own books. I hope the teachers of today are more knowledgeable than some of the ones I had. The expression 'Phoning It In' wasn't about in the 1970's, but that's exactly what a lot of my teachers were doing. Some days, I got home having acquired no new knowledge at all. School is important, but a lot of stuff they teach has no relevance or use in real life. Hands-on Woodworking, Engineering, and Metalworking lessons should be brought back - and soon.

Most of the basic knowledge I need for my college specialty in biology was taught in high school and the same for other specialties. It's often the case when a student enrolls a school for gifted students and there's a lot more to learn for students taking part in competitions and Olympiads. In Vietnam, what we have to learn is scientific knowledge but most students have little chances to actually do experiments on science.
In addition, it's common for countries like China, Japan or Vietnam to give students a huge amount of homework. I used to have up to a total of 50 exercises in the textbook and workbook and for a single math lesson, and most of them are repetitive, not to mention weekly additional worksheets.

    - normal block schedule (8 courses, 4 1.5hr courses per semester)
    - traditional schedule (4 year long core courses and 4 semester long electives)
    - Early college: 5 years of Highschool, receives 2 yrs of college education
    - STEM early college: same as early college but at NC State and has slightly altered courses and requirements
    - Magnet: Same as traditional schedule but has a lot more classes. (It has differential equations!)
    - Flex: emphasis on online courses where you can take them at any time, designed for kids training to he proffessional athletes, dancers, singers, actors...

Heard about a teacher posting a message to parent about teacher being *expected* by parent to buy the supplies. That is just entitled parenting as she said that the kids would come in with shoes and smartphones that were more than a weeks pays for a teacher. Maybe, hat should be looked at. If a kid comes in with a $200.00 smartphone and *new* designer clothes and complain that they can't afford some small schools supplies, the schools should offer the parents JOBS so they can afford them.
Oh, I know to well that it's hard for some parents to get the simple things (Growing up, the kids in my family were allowed 1- 3 new set of school clothe and 5 dollar shoes from a cardboard box in the grocery store). But I think parents need to remember, the teacher may also have kids.

I'm from Texas but attended Catholic schools all the way from age 4 (pre-k) to 18 (12th grade/senior year of high school). From ages 4 - 14 (8th grade), I attended a grade school with a tuition which was, from 1983 - 1993, approximately $4,000 - $5,000 a year, notwithstanding the cost of uniforms. From ages 14 (9th grade/freshman year of high school) - 18 (aforementioned), I attended a high school with a tuition which was, from 1993 - 1997 (yes, I am this old), about $8,000 a year on average, again not counting the cost of uniforms. Our school schedule was pretty much what Katherine Richardson stated, though -- "usually runs from second week of August to the start of June next year", though we typically started our school years about a week earlier than the local public schools did, mainly to make up for the added time we got off for things such as Easter (public schools got Good Friday off but we also got Easter Monday off). Also, all local schools had the benefit of a special local holiday called the Battle of Flowers Day, named after the Friday parade that is the focal point of the local ten-day Fiesta celebrations. BTW, I have a really good friend who's originally from South Africa; I should ask her what the tuition fees were like at her schools.

It's absolutely disgusting that US government won't take responsibility for the cost of school supplies! Teachers shouldn't have to be paying their hard earned money to supply the school. They're public schools, so no teachers or parents should have to take the burden of the cost for school supplies. This is shocking for a so-called "developed" country! I expect this in rural villages in developing countries, not the US!

She's in 6th grade now, and thankfully, she still uses long division. I timed her once on a multiplication problem which she did the good old way and it took her 1.2 minutes; after she was done, I asked her to do the same problem in CC. It took her almost 4 minutes. How is CC better?

    (1) The US has never truly respected the profession of teaching. It is an art and a science. (2) There are ~48 programs that claim "anyone can teach". Most of these programs "train" people in 2 to 3 weeks. There is NO WAY to gain 6 YEARS (Bachelor's & Master's degrees) worth of pedagogical and psychological information in 2 - 3 weeks. (3) Most of those alternately trained teachers are placed as math "teachers", since that is where the need is. Most of these folk do not truly understand how math works.
BTW - I am a high school math teacher with 20 yrs experience and love it!
