    I really enjoy these presentations you all perform and being an electrician I do a lot of, well more humble installations. The gear you install is mind blowing but the principle is exactly the same. You must needs to put an "F-Set" in your tool bag. I can't live without mine when I'm helping customers out. It not only checks where the other end of a cable is, but the continuity and polarity of all 8-Core of your Cat5e - 6. Great fun watching you guys at work and not me - lol! God bless Pete

    Loved the video guys! Great info packed into a relatively short time. I’m glad it worked out for you! I wonder if the speed isn’t close to 1250MB/s because of the cat5 cable or because of settings. If it’s settings you could tweak it to get faster results. I went from 400MB/s with 10GBe on my Qnap to over 900MB/s by optimizing settings. Anyways 700 is fantastic congrats!

      @@FStoppers On my network at home I can't reach full 10GB speeds because the SSDs I use for data in my PC max out at ~500MB/s. If you're reading from an NVMe SSD than that probably isn't your issue though. I've tested with ram drives on both ends and can max out the 10GB. It looks like the 8-bay Synology maxes out for write speed around 700Mb/s, but should be able to saturate 10GBe on reads. Also, take a look at some Gamer's Nexus videos about Synology and keep a spare power supply handy.

    • @tripleceas
      @tripleceas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @fstoppers It's most likely limited to drive speed. With 8 drives I'm guessing you're running a RAID6 with 2 parity. If that's right and considering the drives are 7200rpm spinning disks you are doing very good. Does that synology allow you to use an SSD for read and/or write cache?
      Do you have jumbo frames enabled on both hosts?
      If you find out somehow it is not limited to drive speed you can play with TCP window settings. The reason the speed increases or sometimes decreases overtime has to do with TCP windowing where the two hosts are trying to determine the maximum transmit rate without causing TCP retransmissions. Thus tweaking those settings can net marginal gains. I wouldn't normally recommend this for a large network but a home business may see gains from it without sacrifing stability.

    • @MaksimYuryev
      @MaksimYuryev 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FStoppers Like Eric mentioned make sure that jumbo frames are on (I set mine to 9000) that helped and then also using SMB. I have 8 of the same 14TB drives in RAID 5. Even if you're using RAID 6 you should be able to get over 700 with those drives so I don't think that's the limit. It could be settings, or maybe the Cat5 cable limiting you, or even the CPU or chipset in the Synology. If its working well though I would keep it as it since 700 is great already but if you want to tweak you can troubleshoot and see if you get any more out of it.

    It's great to able to see your IT gears other than your usual photography gears. Ubiquiti products are really amazing and easy to set up. Synology products also great as mid-tier storage for studio since they don't take up a lot of space and quiet compare to the normal rack mount type storage server.

      If you have a decent data bundle on your phone using 4G/LTE, you can use it as a quick hotspot when you need something uploading quick. That's also IF you have a good 4G/LTE service.
      I have a 15GB monthly allowance which I don't max out, as wifi is everwhere, so when I need the occasional faster upload I connect to my phone and get average 12.0Mbps uploads! Much quiker than my home upload connection.

    You are probably hitting a limit at 700MB/s because you are using a single SATA hard drive in your computer. You may notice that 700MB/s happens to be 5.6Gb/s, which is really close to the 6Gb/s limit of SATA hard drives. Maybe if you get a Thunderbolt 3 raid array you could actually hit 1GB/s transfer speeds. Which, when you account for around 2% network overhead from Windows File Sharing protocol, comes pretty close to a 10Gb/s transfer rate on the cable. Heck, if you really wanted to challenge the network, make sure your equipment supports jumbo frames, which might even bring you to 1.1GB/s, and then transfer that 16GB file in under under 15 seconds.
    I think you are spot on with about 100MB/s over the 1Gb/s port though; the network is the limitation on that one.

      @@FStoppers Following up on what Steven says, SATA III has a MAX speed limit of 6Gbps, so probably there will be no way of reading or writing to any SATA 6 drive faster. Faster than this might be RAID 0 or jumping to NVme/PCI Express drives.

      @@FStoppers As Steven states, activating jumbo frames can have a significant impact. Not only will they allow a slight bump up in speed, but your bandwidth will be reduced too, requring fewer transactions(bigger frames of data) and less stress on the system. The effect should be similar to being on a network with fewer users and less traffic. For this to work, your switches have to support the protocol.
      Although not directed at me, not sure what you mean by card reader straight into NAS.

    I was in a similar situation with exisitng 5e cable. I elected to create a collapsed backcbone using 3 switches one on each floor and ran a single fiber optic cable from switch to switch and the last connection as 10Gb to the server. and I wired the access points to the switches and left the existing cable for slower devices like my stereo and tv and sonos units. Over all it was a very affordable solution and only required running three fiber cables (Single mode all the way) to make the primary connection. workstations are directly connected to the switch on each floor and everything else goes through the AP.

    You do know your 10gb read and write speeds will become super fast if you use Cat6A Shielded Everything. ie: shielded keystone, shielded rj45 connectors, doing this way and Shielded will cut out tons of noise in the lines as they travel especially in a cement house, ego you will see extreme faster read write speeds and play back. note: anything over 100 ft (30M) will need 1000Mhz copper cable, like Cat8 shielded and its shielded connectors .

    Synology NAS allows for link aggregation. So you could be using ALL of the Ethernet ports on the NAS, and link them as one huge connection / Ethernet bond using the DSM control panel. This way users aren’t dividing the single Ethernet slot amongst multiple people if working simultaneously. Your thoughput won’t be limited by one Ethernet port because the NAS will use all of them. It’s simple to do, just read about link aggregation on the Synology website. Also, you should add the M2D18 adapter card so you can add M2 SSDs and take advantage of the SSD write speeds / paging. Read about that also on Synology’s website. I’m certain that your simultaneous workflows will benefit from it. Additionally, multiple drives in RAID 6 (or RAID 10) might be helpful if you’re not using that mode already.
    Lastly, your internet modem is probably a bottle neck, everyone should be able to get the full internet speed even if all computers are simultaneously downloading (if you have cable or DSL internet). To achieve that you simply need to buy a modem that supports multiple download and upload lanes (most ISPs avoid giving such modems although their networks are capable of it, because they don’t want you to take full advantage of your connection. But they allow you to use your own modem). You’d have to check with your ISP to see which modems are supported by their network. Hopefully you can use a DOCSiS 3.1 modem, but that’s doubtful, you’ll probably be limited to 3.0 but even then there are 32x8 modems, which support 32 full speed simultaneous download lanes and 8 upload lanes. If y’all have fiber optic internet then this bit is irrelevant.
    My network and smaller / less powerful Synology 916+ NAS operate at faster speeds than your current setup, and that's with only a 24x8 DOCSIS 3.0 modem on a 300Mb/s internet connection, and two bonded (link aggregated) Gigabit Ethernet ports on my NAS. With these tweaks your network will leave mine in the dust. =) -- Your switch probably doesn't have enough ports, but you can add another one of the same brand / model, and connect the second switch to the first one using both fiber optic ports / SPF+ ports, for a 20Gb link between the two switches. Then you can connect the NAS to the second switch (use both of the NAS' 10Gb ethernet ports, and then two of the Gigabit ports, for a total of four ports from the NAS being used. Put those 4 ports in Link aggregation (would be great of you could use all six of your ethernet ports on your NAS but that would require buying a larger secondary switch, and the cost of that outweighs the additional mere 2Gb of bandwidth the last two ethernet ports would provide)).

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did link aggregation with one of our other Synology NAS devices and I remember customer support telling me that although you are binding 4 1Gb connections, you aren't actually getting 4Gb traffic. I believe they said you might be getting a full 1Gb connection if up to 4 computers start pulling at the same time but you aren't able to add them up and get faster than 1Gb for any one user. It is more of a redundancy and is used for backup more than anything. It is this link aggregation that caused us to look into 10GbE to begin with.
      As for the internet, you might be right but we aren't as concerned about getting faster than 250Mbps download speeds since it's rare multiple computers are pulling that much data off line. The bigger concern for us is the intranet speeds.
      Do you know if we can add the M2D18 adapter if we have already added the 10GbE adapter? They might fit in the same slot and we can only use one. -P

    A single 6G SATA channel has a theoretical max of 6G / 10 = 600 MB/second,
    using a "legacy frame" of 1 start bit + 8 data bits + 1 stop = 10 bits per byte.
    Common NVMe SSDs uses 4 x PCIe 3.0 channels at 8G / 8.125 bits per byte
    using a 128b/130b "jumbo frame = 130 bits / 16 bytes = 8.125 bits per byte.
    That's why the leading Gen3 NVMe devices like Samsung do READs at ~3,500 MB/second.
    NVMe SSDs that work at Gen4 PCIe 4.0 speeds double the data rate to 16G / 8.125 bits per byte,
    exactly twice the theoretical max of PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs.
    Moral of this story: in the future, for speed upgrade your NAS with NVMe SSDs!
    HDDs are mostly obsolete, except for their enormous storage capacity.

      All of the switches are installed on shelves. I'm not sure how a shelf really helps with cooling since it doesn't really add any more space between the units but they are all on shelves. It also has fans cooling the system. We did add a UPS to the system so I'm not sure why you are critiquing that. What's the point of a 6U rack if you need an 18U for 3-4 pieces? I see racks full of stuff all the time. -P

If that closet gets that humid, you may need more ventilation.Maybe a few fans to draw air through or into the room. Also, you may need to invest in a drying cabinet to store cameras and lenses. Humidly will reek havoc and destroy your valuable equipment.

    And this is why photographers should stick to photography and not try to be IT guys. You may have 10gb connectivity, but you will never get those 10gb speeds inside with what you are trying to do, never. You will always be limited by the slowest devices in the chain and in this case, it is the hard drives or the hard drive interface. Put on a Thunderbolt or an M2 PCIE drive and you will still not maximize that bandwidth. You are using mechanical drives on a SATA III buss in the Synology. While spinning more platters will yield faster throughput, you are still limited by those 7200rpm drives and how fast they can deliver or write data. Your network speed will be dictated by those devices when accessing the NAS. Having 2 of these exact same NAS units, aggregating ports, installing caching and optimizing everything I can tell you by experience, you will still always be limited by how fast these mechanical SATA III drives can process data. BTW my IT specialty is storage, backups and networks, so I have been dealing with these same issues for decades now. You have a nice fast system, that is true, but don't kid yourself that this 10gb interface is "all that" and more when you are still limited by the slowest component.

    • @FStoppers
      @FStoppers  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If our goal is to get the fastest read/write speeds from a NAS, what else could be done to speed it up? You act like we did something wrong when really you are just pointing out that the NAS is the limiting factor. That's fine and all but we just increased our bandwidth 6-7x by building this 10GbE network. Is your suggestion to not use 10GbE and just live with the 100Mbps speed we had before? Photographers need to be IT guys at some point :) -P

    • @stevemccarthy4713
      @stevemccarthy4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FStoppers if your goal is to get the greatest speeds from the NAS as it is, only SSD's could do some of that, but you would still be limited by the interface. You can also be limited by the type of RAID or hard drive configuration you choose. Caching also plays a role. Between your tests, did you clear the disk caches so that those speeds were not skewed? I never said you did anything wrong, but I believe you probably had the wrong impression, that just putting in 10gb would miraculously increase your throughput 10 fold which is not the case. Bandwidth and throughput are 2 different animals. My point is that many photographers who have an inkling of IT, then come out and "instruct", knowingly or unknowingly, and others will blindly follow whether it be good or bad advice. I see this all the time on PPA forums. I am not saying to not use the 10gb network. On the contrary, always use the fastest interface, equipment, drives, etc., that you can use, but I would caution how the video comes across to others. For example, people on the forums ask about backups and many photographers who know a little about IT give them advice. Some of that is OK, but many others are just setting up the followers for painful lessons and data loss down the road because they really just do not know the intricate facts. Not everyone can call up Synology and Seagate and get free equipment, so our purchases have to be carefully made as it is our hard earned money being spent. What I would do, is rip out those 10/100 switches and replace them with 10gb switches. What is even more important than your network speed is your backups, but you never mentioned them and I saw no equipment for that. Ideally you would have another NAS backing up the first one and then have offsite backups as well. You guys are great photographers and I appreciate what you do. In fact, I own many of your videos. I would just ask you consider how you might come across to those who follow you when you are doing a video on a subject where you are not the subject matter experts. Some of those new photographers will run out and buy whatever you talk about and may find themselves upset or disillusioned when their results are not quite what they expect.

    Step 1: import speedy Gonzales from Mexico, papers will not be necessary as he will be able to get a driver's license in California and be registered to vote at the same time. So, he's only a couple flights away. Step 2: Speedy prefers spicy cheese but pretty much any salsa will do - diet-wise. So, make it available. Step 3: inform speedy of the dangerous cat in your area and the need for him to speed up your internet and associated systems so that you will be able to monitor said cat with all the necessary alacrity to ensure safety of the local rodent population. Once this is done speedy will arrive and deal with any of your needs for speed.

      Andrew Stenton you know, Lee and I were debating this. He said because the computer said 10GB then it was 10GB. I was curious if your network adapter would ever say 2GB or 5GB or 7GB? • @lylestavast7652
      @lylestavast7652 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      make sure that whatever replacement boxes you get for those 10/100 wall mounted switches, are truly non-blocking (all outputs can run a full speed concurrently)... it matters more where you have large number of users than fewer... and consider you can leave the old ones in place and have "some" connectivity at a degraded level everywhere...... and get lower count, but higher speed ports and just patch up those few rooms which really need it - eg. you might not need 96 ports on the replacement switches...

      @@FStoppers On the unifi side, for each of our SPF+ connections we used 2 cables for each connection- Port 1 & 2 uplink to main switch, Port 3+ 4 to synology- and went into the control panel to tell Unifi to aggregate those two pairs of ports together. On the synology side, went into networking to make sure the 2 SPF ports were bonded into one connection. Gonna dig deeper tomorrow to see if there is anymore to squeeze out, and if I can figure out if we can finagle a way to creative FCPX libraries on it (initially it told me it not a supported volume type). If not cool, it will be a good media storage pool, but it would be nice to keep our whole FCP workflowe there fulltime if possible.
