I'm not a dancer. I'm 55 and have struggled with bad poster my whole life. After watching your video, I finally get it. You've changed my life forever. Thank you and God bless you.
I did ballet for 15 years and my teachers always tried to correct my posture by saying imagine I had a pole or a string pulling me.. but I could never seem to get it!! I did this in the mirror and everything clicked into place, thank you so much!
Thank you so much. You seriously gave me a really explanation. I started to have this arching posture around 5 years ago so my lower back hurts almost literally everyday. And today I just finish my very first adult ballet class. The trainer said we made a great posture when we arch. There was this one woman that really arch so much her body and the trainer praised her for her "good posture". Now my back is hurting so much I wanna cry. But with this video I hope I can correct my mistakes.
Im wearing a million dollar necklace. Someone just punched me in the stomach and tried to rob me! LOL. As weird as it sounds. I will never forget the imagery so this actually helps a lot ;)
This is so much more helpful than the “string on head” & “engage your core” advice. I have cervical spondylolisthesis (spellcheck doesn't even recognize that condition-it’s not spondylosis!!) & it does a number on my shoulders & shoulder blades. Constant pain. I’m really working to strengthen those between-the-blades muscles but I am nowhere near the kind of pinch you can do!
This is life changing. Whenever I go back to work I'll get tight shoulders and sore back, but not today! All because I tried out the techniques mentioned in this video, so practical and easy too. Thanks so much ❤
Hey Kathryn, thank you for making this video. I was actually one of the people who requested this topic so I am really happy about it and find it incredibly helpful. Love from Germany xx
You have become my favourite dance TH-camr! I have been struggling to find the best videos for turns, arabesque, posture and my tendus and I find your page and you have everything! You are an amazing teacher keep up the great work and thanks you so much. :)
I really love these types of "basics" videos. Sometimes I forget these things, or haven't really been taught these things "officially" I have a quick question, my ballet teacher says I am not using my back enough in my pirouettes and that it makes my arms drop or look "dead". Do you think this means I need to make sure I am doing that back pinching thing?
AriRHen Yes I believe that is what she means. Really use your shoulders and torso when you turn, and put energy in your arms so your elbows don't drop. Hope that helps! xoxo
superb marvelous my 22 years bad posture got changed while walking seriously ty... ur trik really worked pls send video for sitting straight and keeping face straight rather then keeping up or down
Thank you so much for this video, this will help me a lot! I am not a dancer but a violinist and I have so many problems with my back and shoulders tensing up and going forward, this will help me to relax more and to keep myself from getting achy and tired when I play.
Can you please make a video on how to do the low Giselle bun? My friends and I are struggling and we are performing it in a few weeks! Thank you so much! I am a huge fan! ❤️
Great video, as usual. Thank you! I just recently discovered your channel and loving it. I am a pro (oriental) performer and also recovering from a fairly recent back injury and find your videos very very helpful and am sharing them with friends. Keep them coming!
Personally, I adore this “doso shocking guide” posture treatment that you can also look up on Google. I have slouched most of my adult life, and was ultimately motivated to fix my posture after a friend of mine commented I was slouching at the gym. This guide is teaching my muscles fix posture. Right after using it the very first day, I could already distinguish the difference in my posture.
this video actually helps a lot but, I try to keep my posture very good but I get loads of people staring at my chest and that makes me hunch over, so does my school bag. I try to stand up straight, my physics teacher and chemistry teacher remind me to stand up straight.
My problem is not really finding the correct posture, but keeping it. The muscles in my back start to get really tired and ends up hurting. Any tips on how to make this internal muscles that hold our posture stronger?
Thank you so much for this, definitely helps, especially since these are some different tips compared to most ones. The problem with my body is that I have poor posture because some muscles are either too tight or not strong enough, so maybe a tip for some people to feel whether that may be the core problem for you as well.
Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much for your videos! They really help! I was wondering if you could make a video on how to do a bun for Giselle with hair that goes over the ears. My studio is performing Giselle in couple weeks and none of us can figure out how to do it. Thanks so much!
Very good, basic info for everyone. I try to remember many of these thing, especially while out. I'm not a tall person, but I feel instantly more elegant and grand. :)
I am naturally very stoop shouldered and I constantly have to work on making my chest look as open as possible. This makes my shoulder blades touch like yours do...But I'm always told this is wrong and that the top of my back should be flat...Any thoughts on this?
I love your red Eleve leotard. In other thoughts, texting and computer use has caused poor posture in a lot of people including me. I do notice that when I wear my Amber leotard that the fabric pulls my shoulders to the correct posture. Keep up the good work.
Just the video I needed! My teacher keeps complaining about my posture. My biggest problem is that I struggle to create that extra inch on my waist without going backwards and breaking the lindo :(
Hi Katy will you have some quwstions and answers coming up soon? Just want to know when to participate. Great video. Helps me understand posture much better. Thank you
Really helpful video ! I recently found your channel and I find your videos very interesting, I am not a dancer but still I really enjoy them, thank you !
Love this video! One thing that I get corrected a lot in class is about my posture. When standing and getting ready for an exercise I'm usually held well. Whenever I do a tendu/glisse/ dégagé derrière , my teacher ALWAYS corrects me about pulling up but I don't think I'm correctly feeling it, therefore I'm not actually "pulling up" to standards. When standing I feel the strength in the lower area of my torso (near the bladder) and I keep holding it in class but the teacher still corrects me about it. So the main problem is that I think I am holding in my core well but not the correct way..? When I turn I am also told that I stick out my pelvis- even though I still feel that sensation in my lower torso. Other than that when I am corrected on "pulling up" I usually just end up sucking in my stomach and holding my breath for the whole exercise. Any tips?
My head is so heavy with thought, that it’s weighing the spinal column down. Imagine a bowling ball on a wet stick. Low room temperatures with thin clothing causes slouching as the body attempts to create the arching to keep a warm inner core, so I put on a warm sweater to decrease slouching . 😁💕
do you know if there are other views on this, or have any argument against them? my teacher advises against pinching the shoulder blades together and instead talks about widening the back and separating your shoulder blades and lifting your elbows. i really can't seem to find what feels or looks like the right alignment either way :\ will keep working on it.
I'm sorry about this being kinda off topic >.< But basically I have this problem whenever I try to point my right foot. Two of my toes don't point, like at all. I've tried pushing them down, they don't stay. My left foot is like perfect and my arch is alright I suppose. It's just I can't point my right foot much at all because those toes don't point. This has kept me from training deeper in ballet. Do you have any tips? Great video by the way. :)
Patricia Brady I had/have the same problem; for me it was due to scar tissue build up after some injuries. Try physio or massaging/warming up your feet really well. I'm basically stretching/massaging/working my feet constantly and it's started to improve.
Yes, posture is everything for correct body alignment, but when you explain about the chest out/shoulders back thingy certain people shouldn't walk around like that or other certain people will get the wrong idea, if you know where I'm getting at ha.
I'm 28 struggling with bad posture I have try everything I guess 😅 my last on the 2nd to the last on my list is getting ballet clases ..Do older women also get in ballet too or you need to start young?..like a special class for beginners ?
My ballet teacher finds that I have an extra-arching back. I have to tuck my hips under otherwise I always look like I'm arching even when I'm lifted. Is this something you'd recommend?
My posture sucks. I can get into good posture but sometimes it's hard to maintain good posture. I believe I have to regain strength back in the back. :)
u need to shift your weight/torso more in the front and hold your gluten when u stand in first position. try this before class and watch yourself in the mirror.
Love your video's and tips, I have a question. When I fix my posture I tend to be shorter of breath. It feels like I don't use a part of the volue of my lungs. Do I use the wrong muscles to lift my chest up or is this normal? Do you have any breathing advice during dance, in yoga breathing seems to help a lot.
+XxEvYx I think you are probably trying a bit too hard to fix your posture, you should try to relax into it a bit more; don't stand like a stick and hold your breath, try to breathe and find where your posture is correct, and you can still breathe. Also holding your posture and taking deep breaths should help :) Hope I helped!
I have a bad habit of pushing my hips forward when I releve en pointe. I don't even notice I'm doing it until the teacher says I am. Do you have any suggestions on how I can fix this bad habit?
I'm really struggling with that. I'd recommend Kathryn's video on plies. Good luck - & once you get that fixed, I think all your other moves will become that much better.
Hi Katie! I was wondering how to relieve really intense burning calves while dancing. I personally have burning calves from the beginning of class all the way to the end. It even occurs during dances, what should I do?
Alicia M. Hi Alicia! That sounds so frustrating. Make sure you are really stretching them out after each and every class. Sometimes if your muscles are too tight they can burn. Also make sure you are eating enough potassium - bananas are a dancer's best friend. That should help with muscles burning too!
Instead of permanently self-correcting, isn't there any exercises or practices (other than Ballet) to normalize these improvements? Any equivalent of ballet but more masculine???
Hey Kathryn, its me again. I told u once tht Im having my inter found exam. It just happen earlier today in d afternoon. I felt so bad after it bcz i had made huge mistakes for 4 times, excluding the minors, i started with d wrong foot, thn wrong place ( she wanted pirouttes but my mind prepare me for allegro piece position ), everything was in right place but i decided to dance the piece wrong n went to the wrong corner for reverence. Im so upset. None of this happen during mock or even in class training. I wasnt expecting this. :( d examiner is kind to let me redo n of cx i gave the best at the 2nd chance by doin it right but im really really so disapointed v my performance
She doesn’t has 180 degree turnout bc her joints weren’t build like that, she actually doesn’t has much natural flexibility but she worked up to it, she has a workout for turnout you could try!!
Hey, I know you posted back in the summer but what you describe is a slow process to fix so maybe this might help still. I found that if I imagine a straight line drawn from my pubic bone to navel that needs to travel directly down to the floor I naturally straighten my back. I struggled against my back for a long time trying to tuck and suck in and lean and all that but this is the thing that has made the biggest difference. Also forcing turnout with exaggerate this hyperextended back, so if this is part of your problem turn in a little until you have the correct alignment to be able to turn out better.
I practice my posture anytime I'm sitting or standing, I've been practicing my posture for about 3 months now, and I still catch myself slouching every once in a while. why isn't the practicing posture working ??
All this time i thought my posture was good. Before, I do have an idea that I always slouch. And when I stand straight, my classmates would always say that I'm just trying hard to look like I have boobs😂 So i thought I was doing it wrong and so what I did was I made sure my back was straight but my shoulders aren't align with the back😂😂 Turns out it still wasn't right.
I'm not a dancer. I'm 55 and have struggled with bad poster my whole life. After watching your video, I finally get it. You've changed my life forever. Thank you and God bless you.
I guess we need to get in Ballet class so we could have good posture like ballerinas 😄..Its never to late to try it..

Betsy Kirkland I am glad you said that, I'll remember that too!

I'm SO happy you finally made this video! I have been wanting a posture video for ages! Thanks so so much Kathryn!
This is life changing. Whenever I go back to work I'll get tight shoulders and sore back, but not today! All because I tried out the techniques mentioned in this video, so practical and easy too. Thanks so much ❤

I struggle the most with my posture which affects every (dance) position/movement so this was really helpful! Thank you!
Kuri totani I am so glad this helped!

very useful, thank you.

Christy Cheray Thank you Christy!
I do the hand clasp stretch all the time
Great video! Could you do one on back strengthening? It's my weakest point. It's also not as flexible as I'd like it to be.
Thank you
KARINE AYTAN I believe so! I know I haven't done one in awhile, so I will plan for a Q&A soon! xoxo
Great video Katie! I was wondering, do you have any tips for preventing sickling in releves? Thank you!!😊
theatreandbeautylover24 Thank you! I will do a video on that! :)

I did not know I could crack my chest haha
Great video.Thanks for sharing
Love your videos! Could you please do one on good variations to do for different age groups at YAGP? Thank you!
Little correction:Ballet actually started in Italian courts* then it passed onto French courts. ☀️ Amazing video thx
My head is so heavy with thought, that it’s weighing the spinal column down. Imagine a bowling ball on a wet stick.

this was really helpful now my back doesnt ache like it used to ^·^
❤❤❤
Your "pinch a pencil" tip fixed my neck and chest posture immediately😃
Thank u!!!
Great video

Patricia Brady try massaging your feet, I had a similar problem and it was due to tension

Can u please do a video on improving your grand jete?
Hi! I have very overdeveloped thigh muscles and they are pulling on my knees and causing knee pains. What do you recommend I do?
i used to do a lot of latin dancing and now i've switched to ballet and i keep sticking my butt out :( especially in my plies
u need to shift your weight/torso more in the front and hold your gluten when u stand in first position. try this before class and watch yourself in the mirror.
I have scoliosis and whenever I try to think about having good posture it causes so much back pain 😭
Love your video's and tips, I have a question. When I fix my posture I tend to be shorter of breath. It feels like I don't use a part of the volue of my lungs. I'm really struggling with that. I'd recommend Kathryn's video on plies. Good luck - & once you get that fixed, I think all your other moves will become that much better.
Imagine being squashed between to walls, meaning you can only travel straight up! This should help, good luck!
could this help me with my forward head posture?
So I have a hyper extended back and I always get posture corrections.
Hi Katie!
I was wondering how to relieve really intense burning calves while dancing. I personally have burning calves from the beginning of class all the way to the end. It even occurs during dances, what should I do?

how many times and minutes that we have to do that???
I have a really bad habit of arching my back, how can I help this?
Exercises, do something with yourself.
I am from Germany and I ❤️your videos 🙈✌️
Q&A with Katie: Were you born with 180 degree turnout and natural flexibility, or did you have to work up to it?
She doesn’t has 180 degree turnout bc her joints weren’t build like that, she actually doesn’t has much natural flexibility but she worked up to it, she has a workout for turnout you could try!!
I can't differentiate "someone punching my stomach" and tucking in... :( i have hyperextended lower back
Try thinking of having your tailbone pointing down
Hey, I know you posted back in the summer but what you describe is a slow process to fix so maybe this might help still.
Lmao you’re using the marriage of the kidnap music 😹 but thank you so much for this
I only have trouble with my neck
Thanks!!!
I practice my posture anytime I'm sitting or standing, I've been practicing my posture for about 3 months now, and I still catch myself slouching every once in a while. why isn't the practicing posture working ??
Archey no2 MINE TOO
I never know if my positure is right..
Great video. I also have a video about posture on my channel. But i explain it more from ballroom perspective)
My greatast Problems are the Scapular. 😩
seems like a good video but could not understand the postures well as the transcript in the video is covering the abdomen area unfortunately! !
My back bone might crack.
alternative title: "10x your life in 6 mins"
I try to keep a good posture but when ever i do my double chin shows so i dont do it lmao
If you're lifting then you're working muscles and so NOT relaxed. Rethink this. What comes before muscular action?
audio is not clear, it echo
