Some thoughts on the new high roller three from Maxxis. Have any of you ridden this tire yet? What tire are you running for mixed conditions? starting to post on my second channel / @briancahal2
I switched from Assegai/DHRII to a pair High Roller III for this winter. I only rode them in the dry so far but I felt at home with these tires. They are very predictible with plenty of traction. Now that winter is here, I can't wait to test them in wet conditions. Thanks for the review!
Im soo happy you said DHF i think after all the assegai hype its proven to be a good tyre but missing that open design bite especially on the side knobs which the DHF and dh2 are well known for. Imo think this is more aggressive minion dhf re release named after the high roller. Side knobs are similar almost identical the centre knobs are now more square and ramped. Overal tyre is more square profile. Personally I could not really get used to the assegai it always felt it was sliding over terrain and have had few washouts and never knew where the edge was and never got that edge bite feeling. Now back on the minon and soo much better witj positive edge bite feedback and could anticipate if it was about to let go. Im very curious with the new high roller and feel like it could do all the positive things a minion does but better
Rode it in Bellingham on some steep trails covered in leaf litter over loam. This tire bit in so good! Felt amazing on damp loam. Super stoked on this.
winter has cometh; it'd be interesting if you could review the Spesh HIllbilly for those soft wintery runs - and arguably the cheapest tyres all round.
Very accurate review. I also got them right as they released and went straight to riding relatively dry and hard pack bike park trails, initially I was a little disappointed with the grip compared to a ASS/DHR combo, but I kept them on for the remainder of the season and they really came into play on the wet mucky and leafy trails. You hit on the head with it being a great shoulder season tire that can be run as regular if you wish to do that. Really looking forward to your other tire reviews!
Great review. I've found the HR2 to have similar characteristics, so I'm excited to try. I'd like to see a used tire sacrificed, and cut open to get a closer look at the casing insert. Thanks
I ran the high roller II as a rear with a wtb vigilante front for a long while and loved it in most every condition, year round, on the colorado front range. Its fairly fast rolling for a knobby tire, but the side knobs still have plenty of bite, even in the snow! A very well balanced tire imo
Excellent review! I just did my first ride on the Highroller 3 on wet roots, rocks, and leaves. It’s exactly what I wanted it to be. So far, I prefer it over the Conti Argotal for all out grip and better support from the side knobs. I think the Magic Mary is the most similar tire that I’ve ridden. I think the Magic Mary is a little better at penetrating loose leaves but the Highroller is better on rocks and roots.
i ride argotal (front) and kryptotal (rear) all year round as it's always wet and sloppy in Wales! i'm surprised you say these are better than an argotal. i find that argotal and hydrotal (my ebike front tyre) are by far the best wet/slop tyres i've ever ridden. i used to run high roller II front and rear years ago, loved them in the summer, but hated them in the winter as the grip was non existent.
The side knobs bend over to contact the ground without as much compression on the inner edge of the side knob as the Assegai. I like it more for intermediate which here in the PNW is k a lot of the year. Tried a DD casing, not sure about a DH casing.
Got to be the perfect UK winter tyre, just waiting for it to be available in lighter casings. Been complaining for years there was a huge gap in maxxis’ range between the shorty and everything else.
Was just thinking the same thing, the centre tread pattern does remind me of a mud tyre like the Medusa. I’m looking for something different to dhf on my bike
Curious how you’d like this compared to the argotal DH supersoft. Everyone I’ve asked about that tire says similar things to what you said about the high roller (does better than it should outside of loose conditions, good support in dryer corners, etc) but seems like the argotal would last longer
@@briancahal I did a live review of a tyre , but it went for well over half an hour as I explained how the compounds work as well as construction , weave , colour , tackiness , yield physics . Durability ,in - situ , performance in several different settings . I went on to explain chosen tread characteristics as well as how they work . Lastly what development people's findings were regarding the tyre . Price point setting and market performance of product predictions .
So basically it is a short Shorty which was already supposed to be a short Wetsream ! So is this a short short Wetscream ? lol Many of us already ride Shorties and Magic Maries all years round because we ride loamy/sandy terrain, this could be slightly better rolling I guess ?
I've been curious how this would hold up on hard pack and loose over hard. I love the Magic Mary for how it punches through leaves and stuff in the fall and winter, but I have folded the side knobs over when trails dry out. This seems like it could be an all good year round tire. I've been running Magic Mary in fall/ winter and Tacky Chan in spring/ summer.
@ it seems to me without having run the new high roller that its a rehash of the shorty which performs well in both loose over hard, super loose moon dust and in the wet. After having run both would you say that is somewhat accurate?
Interested in the schwalbe’s. I’ll be looking for that video. Thanks for the reviews
You're making great content...keep it up!

A comparison with the Conti Argotal would be useful, as it's a very popular model for soft conditions.

Is this good for rear tire? I will try change my dissector

Just got a set to try front and rear for this winter, didnt know about the new casing super stoked to hear!

0:45 where is this trail? Looks like a dream. Spray painted rocks is interesting too for a bike park (if it is one).
Hi, any toughts about radials SS tires? Need your video!!
Thanks
Nice I just picked one up thinking it would perfect for the winter and spring here in the south east

can confirm its a sneaky new casing ;)
Where’d ya hear that from?
Is it front tire only or suitable on both? Thank you. I would like to try something new.
Awesome review… I’m looking to get the new schwalbe radial tyre either the Magic Mary’s or Albert. Have you had any experience with these?
Try the Schwalbe Alberts or new Michelin Wild Enduros. Both excellent tires
I’ve ridden the Albert radials in the trail casing and have been super impressed. Review coming soon after I ride the enduro casing
Which tire on the market has the most square profile?
@@MikeesTexasnot sure. Continental off the top of my head.
Tread pattern looks like the old conti Baron, which was an amazing allround tire.
How's it on wet roots? slabs? vs the ASS, and what did you run in the rear?
I ran dhr in the rear. Decent on wet roots and slabs.

Nice shirt!😉

I find that the side knobs on Maxxis tyres start ripping away from the casing riding mainly loose over hard trails.
Would you say it’s more of front tire? Or does it go well in the back to?
Condition dependent but front for more full time use. Front and rear of you want a more dedicated wet set up.
Is that sun peaks your riding in the background footage?
Yes th-cam.com/video/p9LfvFQKhjs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=I9jKThO1WeujkWK1
@briancahal have you run this tire directly against a shorty?
No but ive had a lot of experience with the shorty in the past
@ it seems to me without having run the new high roller that its a rehash of the shorty which performs well in both loose over hard, super loose moon dust and in the wet. After having run both would you say that is somewhat accurate?
I dont think i'll ever understand the point of tyres with a transition or drift zone.
