Like you said Matt, it's not breaking the rules, but glad you discouraged the mattress on the balcony thing. If it does become more common and mattresses get worn out faster or dirty, I see a rule being implemented.
Another rule I would add is to be courteous of neighbors. It's not fun hearing loudness outside your cabin room when trying to relax. So just being aware of the thinness of the walls is important as well.
For those that think putting used dishes outside your cabin door is gross etc. Our cabin stewards have told us on numerous occasions to place them there so they can pick them up without having to go in the cabin.
@@Mcarson10 I just did a transatlantic cruise in October and was told to just leave them by our door. I’m sure that is what you were told and of course you should follow those instructions. I always let the cabin attendant know when I have an excursion and be gone whole day, then they can clean the room whenever it fits their schedule for day
Moving a mattress to the balcony??? That seems like it would get dirty, wet, and worn down. Would you want your house guests moving you mattress onto the patio? I don't think it's a good idea, though I completely understand wanting to be comfy. That should probably be a rule- don't move your mattress to the balcony or shower or the MDR... just don't.
Yes. The same couple that I saw I on the Allure of the Sea from our ship, Anthem Of the Seas , March 10 - March 17, 2024. I took a picture , too, on March 13th when we At CoCoCay. Did they get in trouble doing this? Hope other does not follow. 😱😱😱 BTW, lots of passengers were watching them from our balcony as they sail away ahead of us …
Funny you bring up that rule. My brother one time couldn't sleep because of my snoring so he went out side with the pillows and blanket and slept on the balcony. He was respectful with bedding and brought it back in the next morning placing it back on the bed and everything. We never heard a complaint from our cabin attendant but I imagine this should be avoided when it is pouring rain. To be honest we didn't exactly admit it either but it was the best out of a problematic situation since we didn't have ear plugs.
I think it is a bad idea to bring a mattress outside because there is dirt, moisture and insects outside that you don't want it on or in the mattress. Some one else will be sleeping in your room the following week and they could have reactions to various things.
I liked to sleep with the door open to the balcony. I enjoy the sea breeze and the sound of the ocean. One cruise, my stateroom attendant told me we can’t do that because it messes up the AC for the ship.
It doesn’t mess up anything. When the balcony door is open the ac unit automatically turns off. I will say it works the ac unit hard when you close it and it try’s to cool your room down but it’s constantly turning on and off like that
I've slept on the balcony before, but it was on the lounger on a long, stern facing balcony. No mattress, other than the one on the lounger that was already there. I never even considered moving the bed mattress outside.
Considering the condensation that happens on the balconies. I would think this would be a no no. Once you put get that moisture I. The mattress it would be pretty hard to get it all removed and not cause mold or other problems with the mattress. Which to some could be really bad. Asthmatics, allergies, or any type of breathing issue that could be triggered by contamination to the n Mattress. So maybe just book a room with a chaise or find a lounge chair on deck somewhere.
It's not good for the mattress to be directly on the floor. I don't care about the etiquette, but health wise I'd say it is a no-go, as putting the mattress directly on the floor could cause mold. Eew. However, could one bring an inflatable mattress and put it on the balcony? Seems like a nice way to enjoy the balcony, there has to be a not gross way to enable this!
Totally fine to bring an inflatable mattress or pool float in your luggage and lay on that to your heart's content. I would say that a larger air mattress would take up a lot of luggage space and would take significant time on the cruise ship to hand inflate. But if you're intent on having a mattress on a cruise ship balcony, air mattress could go in your luggage
It'd be so cool to know what ship we're looking at when you're using your B-Roll footage Matt! Thanks! A simple on screen card or note would be awesome.
As an ex Assistant Housekeeper onboard, I wouldn't suggest breaking the furniture outside rule, especially your sofas or other interior furniture. The fabric on them are not for outdoor use. If they get exposed to harsh sun and or other elements they can very easily fade or damage.
As for furniture outside on the balcony..... I was seriously considering hauling the raggity old couch out to the balcony where it belonged on my last Serenade of the Sea cruise.
The hallway is very narrow and opposite cabin doors are just across, be mindful of your cabin mate state of dress when you enter or exit your cabin, could avoid awkwardness
I wish I knew about the no smoking rule on balconies as we just went on a R.C cruise recently and people near us were smoking on their balcony it was disgusting smells their cigarette smoke😣
We just got back from our Royal Caribbean cruise, and I have to say that there were two guys occasionally smoking on their balcony polluting it for the rest of us. I tried to report them, but they continued to smoke out there. One of them did it even on the last day.
The only argument about moving a mattress outside I can think of, is that if left outside it could blow overboard OR get rained on, and then at some point become moldy and expensive to clean or replace. But I’d love to sleep out there. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a nice hammock to hang on a balcony?
I personally wouldn’t do the mattress on the balcony… if you don’t move it back your stateroom attendant will have to and they have enough of a burden with more rooms to clean than before. Plus I don’t know about anyone else but I couldn’t sleep overnight on the balcony.
We were on a cruise once and next door to us in Cozumel I think it was was a Royal ship and a person had moved the sofa to the balcony and was using it there.
My best friend on his first cruise learned the hard way about flushing wet wipes down the toilet. Absolutely, the plumbing is different from at home and you will cause problems if you flush anything other than the thin provided toilet paper down the toilet.
100%, please don't put your mattress on the balcony. Like...come on, I don't want to sleep in mold or have sea water smell soaked into the mattress while I'm sleeping. Bring an inflatable mattress if you really want to do that.
No , furniture that is not on balcony should not be moved to it, no enough room, could damage the items being moved, and you don’t want to trip out there with too many items in your path, just not designed to add all that stuff out there
If you want to sleep under the stars its much better to ask the steward if that can be arranged than moving stuff on youre own. It might also be sudden waves or rainshowers over night and getting youre bedgear soaked might not be the best idea. J.
I heard a rumor a while back about someone hanging a hammock on their balcony. I've never seen this actually happen, and all of the cruise lines I have been on prohibit leaving items on your balcony, so being the rule follower I am, I wouldn't leave anything other than my own wet/sandy water shoes and a beach bag on my balcony. I definitely wouldn't move indoor furniture outside without permission.
I know someone who puts their mattress out on the balcony! Thought they were the only one… that I knew of anyway. They’re strict about only doing it ONLY on Oceanview balconies and they always put it back inside during the day. I always thought it was a radical idea, but nothing that would degrade the quality of the mattress. Of course, all the other rules just go without saying.
Regarding the mattress being drug out to the balcony...it's not our thing, but if someone does choose to do that, they alone should be responsible if it rains and they failed to bring the mattress back in!
Dragging your mattress out is a bad idea. The balcony deck is non-skid and crawling around on the mattress will flex the bottom against the abrasive deck and provide unnecessary wear on the mattress. Please Royal Caribbean ban this practice!
Please practise good social etiquette too: 1) NOT to hold the lift doors open to discuss dinner plans with your family/extended families standing outside the lift while there are other cruisers already in the lift! 🤦🏻♀️ 2) NOT to use belongings to camp the seats in Windjammer throughout the day, or worse, using grandparents to sit there whole day looking after the belongings and “reserve” the seats 😓
There may not be a rule about moving a mattress on your balcony but you shouldn't really have to tell people not to do that. Its common sense you would NOT do that!
Putting your mattress on the balcony is stupid! It's the bed you'll sleep on later and you'd be exposing it to anything that might drop or blow on it outside, not to mention getting the bottom of it and the bedding dirty. Do you do that at home?
Air mattress could fly off into the ocean. Regular mattress is a tinderbox for those other rule breakers thr smokers. Specific rules needed for the 1000 crazy situations people want to do.
Dont put your mattress on the balcony. Other people will have to sleep on that mattress and there may be bugs, dirt, water, etc on the balcony and that mattress you're a guest on for 7 days, not its your mattress at home to do with what you will. Be a normal human being and dont bring the indoors outdoors, and dont bring the outdoors indoors. Its really inconsiderate.
I'll never put my dishes in the hallway, i think thats so gross. I dont wanna see ur half eaten food not to mention these hallways are narrow and plates on the floor are a trip hazard. I stack my plates nice and neat in my room for the attendant. Idk why cruise lines want ppl to put their dishes in the hallway. I mean I get why in a sense bc they can send someone with a cart to grab everything but if that's the system u want someone needs to be constantly collecting dishes. I've seen dishes sit in the hallway for hrs before. Imo having a cart at the end of the hallway would make alot more sense then plates and food all over the floor.
Another thing I wish they would do is move the smoking area on Quantum of the Seas since it’s right in the middle of the ship next to the main pool and the main thoroughfare to the Windjammer it was disgusting having to walk through that to get anywhere. Even if you went around it or above it, the stench of cigarette smoke still reached there.
Another unspoken rule I'd add - don't abuse your DND sign. Although it is your right to privacy, cabin stewards do need to enter and clean at least once in a while 1. For obvious hygienic reasons because the ship's turnaround time between cruises is short and 2. To make sure you are okay. See it as a wellness/wellfare check. Cabin stewards are the eyes and ears, they're not just there for cleaning
So, you are basically encouraging your viewers to take their clean/dry/interior mattress outside onto their dirty/wet/exterior balcony?? And, "a lot of people do it". I have never heard of anyone ever doing this ever, until you mentioned it in this video. I'm really surprised by your take here, to be quite honest.
Come on, taking your bed out on the balcony? What if it rains? The humidity, salt air etc... Taking a table or desk chair that is more comfortable, okay.
Moving your mattress to your balcony is a dumb idea. For one it’s heavy, two seems very unsanitary. If it rains it’s gets all wet, then what? So I say don’t do it!!
moving your mattress to the balcony is stupid, a dumb idea and it needs to be banned by all cruise lines immediately. It dirties the mattress. It’s just nasty.
Bringing furniture outside would only really be against the rules, I imagine, were you to leave it out there. You're not supposed to leave anything but the table and chairs that are typically out there unattended to reduce risk of fire (from, as you mentioned earlier in the video, some idiot smoking and flicking ash or whatever over the balcony railing). If you're out there with it and bring it in when you're done, I don't see why there would be much of an issue. Balconies are, after all, cleaned by ship maintenance every week or so. So yeah, go for it!
I believe it's a bad idea to move mattresses to the balcony . if some lame brain does leave them , they should be penalized some way if they leave them unattended and exposed to the elements.
I can't believe you said it's okay to put your mattress on the balcony .There is a lot of moisture, salt, and dirt that gets onto the balcony from the air and the ocean. Then you put it back on the bed and mold can easily develop. It will never fully dry or get clean. I used to hang towels on the balcony furniture to dry. Not only do they not dry, but they end up wetter. Really bad idea, and I'm sure the cruise lines would not appreciate it.
I'm going to comment on the mattress on the balcony issue from another angle. It looks terrible - especially to other outside viewers and cruise ships. I know, people will say "I paid thousands of dollars for this trip, therefore I'll do what I want!!". They use the same logic with "formal night" dress, and their overall behavior in general. Maybe I'm way too old and old fashioned, but cruises used to have an unwritten, unspoken expectation of propriety and civility/manners. Hanging your laundry, sitting on the rail, and dragging your mattress/furniture out on your balcony looks trashy and ghetto, in my opinion. I'm tired of peoples' "I do what I want!" attitude. Beam me up, Scotty....😬
Matt thanks for showing that video the bed on the balcony because that's exactly what we're going to do I'm paying over $6,000 for my balcony and you're damn right I'm going to put the bed out on the balcony that's a great idea Whoever thought of it is a genius could you imagine waking up in the morning and looking at the ocean eye level can you imagine at night sleeping peacefully and hearing the sounds of the ocean hell yeah we going to do it it's not against the rules as long as you're not a sleepwalker there's nothing wrong with having your bed mattress out there on the balcony especially all the money you're paying
I think with as much money 💵 as a cruise costs if you want to set your mattress on the balcony to keep from paying another ridiculous fee for a cabana you should be able to do it and everyone needs to stop bitching about it and being a Karen !
My thing is people still smoke on balconies everyday and I can’t remember a single story in years about a fire being caused by smoking on a balcony. The greatest prevention to people flicking ash over board would be to provide them ash trays. And if the worry was fire, vaping wouldn’t be included in the rule. I find it hard to believe that placing smoking balcony cabins at the rear of the ship so smoke doesn’t blow on non smoking staterooms would cause any issues.
@@duffin.caprous I see you didn’t bother reading the entire post before commenting. Putting smoking balconies at the rear of the ship would prevent anyone who isn’t in a smoking balcony from smelling the smoke.
@@duffin.caprous what problem could it cause if you can book a room away from the smoking section? When the smoke blows, it blows towards the back of the ship as long as it’s sailing, so the smoking section being in the rear would mean no one who doesn’t want to be in the smoking section would smell smoke.
@@DEPUTYGETSOME First of all, the smell is still not the only reason. Fire is a massive risk even if you don't think it is. All it takes is one careless person. Second of all, what about when the ship isn't moving? Third of all, do you really think they're going to make an entire set of cabins that will get completely coated in cigarette smoke so that they will always smell like smoke, which means no non-smoker would ever want to book them? It's literally not worth it for them to do this. Either quit smoking or just go up to the smoking area.

Mattress on the balcony is just gross
Moving INSIDE furniture OUTSIDE is the most ignorant idea I've heard lately. Don't be such a Neanderthal!
Renting a room for 7 days doesn't give you a right to ruin it for all subsequent guests. Don't be so selfish.
Also, this couple got banned for life for doing this so if the 6k you’re paying is worth the ban so be it.
I thought that this was a sarcastic comment by the poster. I'd think if you had 6k for a week, they'd provide loungers🤷♀️
That's not the only reason, I'm sure. I damn sure don't want to smell cigarette smoke wafting into my balcony because someone smokes near me.
@@duffin.caprous I see you didn’t bother reading the entire post before commenting. Putting smoking balconies at the rear of the ship would prevent anyone who isn’t in a smoking balcony from smelling the smoke.
@@DEPUTYGETSOME I read it. I disagree that it wouldn't cause problems.
