    What a coincidence!
    I went out yesterday collecting seeds myself. I really enjoyed this video.
    I collected, beech, oak,chestnut, hawthorn, larch, scots pine, and some cones off a beautiful ornamental pine which I'm not exactly sure what it is.
    I'm just going to put the kettle on and get them planted.

    I fear I may have watched Tony's video first - but I got here eventually! Great video and I did enjoy seeing you jumping about as I have done many times in the past looking for berries and stuff. I have never tried planting my own seeds although the apple trees I show on my channel are all from seed germination by either my late wife or friends up here in Stronsay. Enough is enough...I' m going collecting when I get back from holiday :)

    Just an important note - your comment about not needing refrigeration for seeds is valid only if the species grows wild in your area or if it comes from a similar climate.
    Where I live, we hardly get a winter frost. Japanese maples grow really well here but our winters arent cold enough for their seeds to germinate in spring. I HAVE to refrigerate my seeds to get them to sprout. I also have to refrigerate my japanese larch to keep it happy.

    Hi Jelle, I'm going for beech and maple seeds this year. Last year none of the beech seeds grew but there was a lot of very wet weather and flooding where I collect the seed. The trees may have suffered and so the seeds as well. I guess we'll find out the results in the spring. That's half the fun. Personally, I soak the seeds for a couple of days before sowing which seems to help identify non-viable seed. Those that still float I throw away.

    • @GrowingBonsai

    To be quite honest I leave the birds do the job of collecting and sowing seeds of native trees. I always find all sorts of seedlings in my garden and along country hedges.
    However I have grown from seeds trees that I have found difficult to source from local nurseries like trident maple, crab apple, carpinus coreana, etc.. A part from crab apple seeds which I collected myself, the rest I bought online from a specialized seed supplier.
    Not going to sow anything this year because I already have more young plants that I know what to do with.😅

    Great videos! Do you have experience with that particular maple species (Acer preudoplatanus) as bonsai? I like them as trees but always thought they have even coarser growth habit than Norway maple (A. platanoides) therefore never tried them for bonsai. Do they reduce in a pot?

    • @GrowingBonsai
      @GrowingBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest.. I have one in my garden that I am trying to make more bonsai-isc. But I do not consider it great, and untill I have access to a massive trunk with very small cuts, do not think I will grow one as bonsai for real.. So.. Not much I can tell you. In the yard defoliating, removing winter terminals and frequent pruning do create short internodes..
