Yeah, putting Alex in the Top 10 for MMA GRAPPLERS --- simply because Islam failed to sub him --- is like Putting Gleason Tibau at the Top 10 for MMA grappling simply because the Great Khabib couldn't even take Tibau down (much less coming close to subbing him: although Tony easily Subbed Tibau: Poor Tony was NO JOKE 5 - 7 years ago, from his late 20s to early 30s).
Alex is just an EXCEPTIONALLY strong, stocky, short, and agile all arounder to deal with. He's NEVER going to be the most elite in striking, kicking, wrestling, or BJJ (which also is how GSP described himself: not the most elite in any thing, but because he's so much better than almost every specialist in all the major field, when GSP combined all his tools, very few specialists could deal with him, outside of the rare situations where he should have zigged, when he zagged, that is)....
Yeah he only seems like such a great grappler because he’s insane all around and his grappling isn’t a glaring hole in his game so it seems like he has top top tier grappling

This list seems to be more about submissions and offensive BJJ than "grappling". If you can make anyone look like a child grappling, mount them and beat their face in, does that not count? Cody McKinzie was a finishing machine when he could get his way, but he crumbled when he faced a decent grappler.😅 Charles has continually gotten bullied and out grappled by strong wrestlers thru out his career ...yeah he has the record for subs, but is nowhere near as strong a defensive grappler as Burns. He is a great finisher but him at 2 is ridiculous. Colby is salivating over him as he knows he can bully him.

My issue with the argument that Ortega has overrated grappling is you can’t have it both ways in the Volk fight.. you can’t praise Volk for fighting out the submission while also saying Ortega doesn’t have grappling.. Ortega is a great grappler..

I’ve rewatched the Jones vs Reyes fight recently and I think people look at the wrong round when scoring it.Round 3 was a clear one for Reyes but i think round 2 was a toss up and much closer than people remember

Paul Craig isn’t consistent enough to be ranked so highly. Pitiful performance against Oezdemir and gets finished by Jimmy Crute, yet TKOs Jamahal Hill and finds a Hail Mary finish against Ankalaev. Michael Johnson is a solid comparison even if Craig is more one dimensional.

Ankalaev shows more skills than Craig in general as well. Craig doesn't have that wrestling factor/ well rounded grappling, you wouldn't pick him as the best grappler in the division so you wouldn't pick him as a TOP 10.
L take. Inconsistency is natural for a jiu jitsu specialist with no stand-up and mediocre take-downs. You can't argue that he has one of the best submission games on the roster.

Colby should be ranked among the Top 10 best wrestlers, NOT the Top 10 grapplers.
There is zero logic as to why the descriptionss "elite/D1 wrestlers" and "elite grapplers/mma BJJ" should NOT be kept finely separated: we KNOW most elite BJJ WILL sub most D1 wrestlers, in MMA, and most D1 wrestlers WILL take most elite BJJ down at will, using D1/Greco Roman/Olympic wrestling rules.
But the reason NEITHER pure elite BJj nor pure D1 wrestlers are dominating the champ spots at the UFC is that NEITHER of those two skills are sufficient, each on their own, to secure belts at the UFC.
The overwhelming majority of belts at the UFC are held by elite strikers with good wrestling and good BJJ.
Having a "black belt" in BJJ, as Islam goofily said, doesn't mean you're his level or Charles level. There really are different levels to BJJ.
If everyone was fighting in their prime --- & able to go into any division ---- Usman, Colby, and Leon's black belts are NEVER going to be enough to out maneuver the skills of Burns, Maia, Craig, Aljo, Charles, Islam, Khamzat et al.
People like Greg Gallespie, Colby, Blaydes, Bo Nickal... they are more of pure elite wrestlers than real elite MMA grapplers, by which we mean having the ability to FINISH someone on the ground via mostly BJJ maneuvers.
Bo, still only 26, likely will learn to incorporate elite BJJ into his next level D1 wrestling; but he's nowhere near that territory, yet. If Bo was to be put up against, say, Khamzat at this point --- for theoretical discussion purposes --- Khamzat would sub him rather easily, even though in pure college D1 wrestling, Bo would out maneuver Khamzat.
Anyway, Islam and Khamzat the only true grapplers/wrestlers, with the possibility of Jailton Almeida (whose records are still too small to determine, like Tom Aspinal: both Jailton and Tom are known to be able to wrestle at very high levels; they also have elite BJJ; but they LACK the more extensive records of some others who've been at the UFC for many years wrestling and doing BJJ against other high ranking wrestlers and grapplers).
All the others belong in one or the other. Charles is a next level grappler; but he's not taking Arman or Islam or Gamrot to the mat using wrestling. He could put them into his guard, like Paul Craig would do; but that's NOT elite wrestling.
And, again, Colby would be able to EASILY take Charles down (both are the same size and height); but once they hit the mat, Charles would sub Colby relatively easily.... so, again, these two CRAFTS should be mentioned as DISTINCT crafts/skills/arts, in the octagon.
Maia, Woodley, Lawler, Jorge...were all past their prime when Colby out maneuvered them, be they elite grapplers like Maia or elite wrestler like Woodley.
RDA was the ONE TRUE PRIME guy Colby has beaten at the UFC.
But RDA is only 5'8" (Arman's height and size, one of the SMALLER 155lb guys) and Leon also beat RDA a year after Colby did it, with a better margin, and Leon was #12 when he fought the #4 RDA, whereas Colby was already the #4, when he beat the #1 RDA, back in 2018...
And Leon WAS NOT a black belt back then; but both RDA and Colby were black belts in BJJ when they fought. That tells you Leon's BJJ skills --- black belt or not --- was already way better than most black belts, even when Leon was still a brown belt guy...
