The best Superman villains are the ones he can't beat through brute strength alone, and force him to think outside of the box. Clark's intelligence always gets overlooked by people for some reason.
So true. Any villain who only exists to challenge Clark's physical strength is inherently less interesting because it's so easy to simply write Superman to be as strong as you want him to be; it's completely arbitrary and not a real challenge. Challenging his wits or his values or his ability to make an airtight case *for* his values takes more creativity and usually leads to more meaningful/fun stories, because while Clark is both very kind and reasonably clever, he's not superhuman in that regard, just a good role model.
I love the idea the three months rule. With magic beings like that it’s always thousands of years or something like that. Just three months is pretty funny.
I think it's his fault, too. I think Mxy can set the rules, but once he's established one, it is hard for him to change it. He's never removed the backward name thing, even if he did tweak it, like the two times condition in this episode.
I love the way that the show crew describe Mxyzptlk behind the scenes: “he almost thinks of himself as Superman’s pal. He doesn’t wanna kill him, he just loves tugging on the ol’ cape.”
Fun fact: Mxyzptlk here, in the comics, other cartoons or live action or whatever he appears in is the same character. Meaning in the entire multiverse, there’s only one of him so he tends to change his appearance based on the universe he’s in.
Honestly that actually does make more sense and I love the idea that Mr Myxzpltk no matter what iteration is still the same character that loves to troll every version of Superman for laughs
fun fact: in the original comics (before the first reboot), the series finale had Mxyzpytlyk as the final and most threatening villain (after his prior appearances were usually more like this one), revealing that he's an absolutely terrifying threat if he decides to use his powers for more than trivial games. His last rampage once he decided to get serious started by outing Clark's identity and went on to effectively massacre a sizeable portion of the main cast. By the end he forced Clark's hand into breaking his no-kill rule just to stop him. "The big problem with being immortal is filling your time. For example, I spent the first two thousand years of my existence doing absolutely nothing. I spent the next two thousand years being saintly and benign, doing only good deeds. When that novelty began to fade, I decided to try being mischievous. Now two thousand years later I'm bored again... I need a change. Starting with your death, I'll spend the next two millennia being evil. After that, who knows? Maybe I'll try being guilty for a while." -Mxyzpytlyk
Did Clark actually intentionally kill him? It's been years since I read it, but as I recall, he planned to seal him in the Phantom zone, but Myxie tried to escape to the 5th dimension at the same time, and his essence was shredded between realities.
@@Babbleplay i can't remember either- you definitely have the gist but o can't remember if Clark was anticipating and counting on Mxy's escape attempt. At any rate the intention didn't make any difference to Clark's sense of guilt
The Kents' cat is named Streaky! In the comics she was Supergirl's cat, and gained powers like her from exposure to "X-Kryptonite" (whatever that is). She then became a member of the Legion of Super-Pets (yes) along with Krypto the Super-Dog, Comet the Super-Horse, Beppo the Super-Monkey, and Proty the blob alien.
Mr. Mxyz (not gonna try to do the rest, lol) is a character who exists solely to annoy Superman, and who better to play the role than the late great Gilbert Gottfried? This is just a hilarious outing from start to finish, and Gilbert is just game for it all. I also love how Tim Daly is also clearly having a blast with this one, as he’s just as funny as Gilbert is. One of my all-time favorite episodes 😂
It kills me that we never got Mxy (Gilbert Gottfried) and Bat-Mite (Paul Reubens) in the same Paul Dini written episode of Justice League Action or Brave and the Bold or even a full World's Funniest DTV. Now, both actors have passed away. 😢
Mr Myxzpltk is one of my favourite Superman villains because he doesn't want to rule the world or destroy things he is literally just an interdimensional trickster/Imp that loves to get on Superman's nerves, just an absolute troll with the power to alter reality like a god and I LOVE IT! I also love how this episode shows Superman is more than people think and knows to outthink his enemies as well as take them down; he is not just strong but very intelligent, maybe not as mart as someone like Batman or Lex Luthor, but still bright and knows when to use his instincts. Rest in Peace, Gilbert Gottfried famously voiced the character and remains perhaps one of the most iconic voice actors and comedic legends of our time. He's the voice of Myxzpltk when I read the comics.
Myxy reveals that he had a reason for always aggravating Supes. He had to have a reason for interacting with Supes that wouldn't draw the attention of those above himself. So he became an annoyance. Myxy was preparing Supes for a confrontation that needed Supes to have been exposed to lots of 5th Dimensional energy, which he got from all his interactions with Myxy. Myxy was just looking out for Supes in the grand scheme of things.
My favorite Mxylptlk comic moment was when there was a bunch of seperate panels, and they all reach out of of their panel's frame to punch Superman on another page all at once
Fun fact: The part about Mr. Mxyzptik exposing Superman's secret to the world and torturing Superman, and then Superman mentioning finding a new secret identity is a reference to the 1986 comic by Alan Moore, "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?"
Every good Superhero needs some reality bending weirdo to show up sometimes to shake shit up, annoy them, and then be ultimately defeated via outwitting them. Myx is such a breath of fresh air in every era of Superman, he's not evil, just an all powerful pest, and thank God he is. He reminds me of a similar entity in the Marvel Universe called the Impossible Man. He wasn't a reality bender like Mixy but his shape-shifting abilities were so insane he may as well have been one, as well as being annoying
This episode is a remake of one from the old Filmation Superman cartoons (there are a few of those in this series), but it's still my favorite because it specifically shows off how Superman actually has a brain and can outwit any opponent as well.
One of the most powerful being in DC, curiously he doesn't want to be bad, he is just funny in his own way 1:58 "By Siegel & Shuster" the men behind Superman
Mxyzpixilated is a hard name to say. Steaky is also a character in Krypto the Super Dog. Gilbert Gottfried has a great voice. Iago in Aladdin is the best work he has done. Along with another great actor the late Robin Williams. Rest in Peace to both legends.
Streaky originated in the early Silver Age. She was Supergirl's pet, granted occasional super-powers from a sorceress, if I recall. Supergirl had a lot of weirdness like that. DC couldn't figure out if Supergirl was an outright heroine or if she should also play to the romance market that had dominated comics in the 1950s. She had a boyfriend that was very consistent with romance comics, a super-cat, a super-horse ... I think they thought she would be the character that attracted female readers in an otherwise male-dominated demographic. It never worked. For Supergirl's entire existence, she's been re-written, retconned, and re-imagined more than any other DC character. It was one of the reasons she was written the way she was in the _Crisis On Infinite Earths_ comics mega-event that ended the Silver Age. I'll not discuss it to avoid spoilers. It was really only the DCAU and Arrowverse versions that remained consistent throughout their runs (and each of those were different from the other).
@dupersuper1938 I think you can make arguments for those characters. However, my money is still on Supergirl. There have been periods when Supergirl wasn't even Kryptonian. She's been Kryptonian, but not a relative of Superman. There was a period in the 1990s when she was a shape-shifting alien who only looked like a blonde in her 20s most of the time. Sometimes she didn't have Kryptonian powers or only mimicked them. Sometimes she was a human who'd had Kryptonian powers granted to her. On a couple of occasions, she's been rendered powerless for extended periods. She generally settles back to being Kal-El's cousin, but writers seem to perpetually not know what to do with the character. Consequently, every new writer assigned to her brings their perspective -- and none of them have ever become "definitive." The Arrowverse comes close to definitive, but for me that has more to do with Melissa Benoist's portrayal than the writing. My personal favorite isn't definitive. It'the DCAU version. I don't want to get into details for obvious spoiler reasons. Admittedly, I've not followed Donna Troy very closely. I'm 58 now, and have been a Superman fan as far back as I can remember. I tend to pay more attention to his pantheon. I know Donna's gotten very convoluted. For me, the definitive version is Wonder Girl during Perez's run on _Teen Titans_ . That's how I'll always think of her. Your mileage may vary, of course. 🙂
@dupersuper1938 I think DC has generally been bone-headed since Julius Schwartz left. All they've been doing since is re-telling stories from different Ages, but with a modern twist. I don't find that very creative. I think the DCAU was the most creative thing done this century. It's why I enjoy these reactions so much. O Julie, why hast thou forsaken us? 😔
@dupersuper1938 I can't disagree that they've definitely had some good stuff. _Watchmen_ and _The Dark Knight Returns_ (but not its sequel) are huge stand-outs for me. Somehow it just doesn't strike me as being truly _original_ , that's all. So many different ideas and characters have been around since the Golden Age. They were admittedly written for a totally different readership, but the sheer number of characters created in the Golden Age always amazes me. They weren't afraid to throw anything against the wall and see what stuck. It wasn't just DC, it was all the publishers. There are whole videos on TH-cam detailing "lost" heroes that were so ludicrous that they only lasted for one story in anthology book. They just did _anything_ and see if it sold, no matter how dumb. You don't see that today. BTW, I enjoy having a civil conversation with a fan who knows comics. Civil conversations are so rare any more. 🖖

It also shows him enjoying messing with Mxy and outsmarting him every time he came back. Mxy’s girlfriend was obviously inspired by Jessica Rabbit, never got why he rather spend his time messing with Superman rather then being with her.
Yay. I’m happy that you reacted to probably one of my favorite episodes of this series. As a Superman fan, I feel like he doesn’t get enough credit for using his brain. This episode totally highlighted that Superman can depend on using his brain as much as using his fists.

@Mage Reacts Mxyzptlk is not only one of superman's most powerful villains in superman's rogues gallery he is also probably one of the most powerful beings in the DC universe. He is a 5th dimensional being and can manipulate reality in our dimension. In the comics he has actually gone up against powerful beings like Trigon and Darkseid. He is honestly one of my favorite villains from superman's rogues gallery. He has also been known to get upset whenever someone else messes with superman, in away it's kinda like how the joker gets a little bit jealous whenever someone is messing with batman without jokers 🃏 approval.
streaky the supercat is/was a cat with kryptonian powers, just like the more famous krypto the superdog. while i dont think the cat in this show has powers, it was probably a reference to that cat! especially since the cat in this show does have a streak on its back :)
He does appear in Smallville (though an alternate, more grounded version of him as is the normal practice in the show). When you do you watch-along to Smallville, even if you don't post all the episodes to TH-cam I do hope you'll make them all availible on Patreon. I'm excited for you to get to that show.
This is one of my favorite episodes! Mxyzptlk is a very underrated Superman villain and I wish the movies would use him. Maybe in Gunns universe, they will. Glad your loving the show, it gets crazier from here!
That is Streaky the Supercat, usually Supergirl’s pet! Yet another silver age relic. But honestly I’m glad he gets to retire on the Kent family farm, having to save Superman when all of the Earth’s iron was turned into kryptonite seems like a lot of stress for one cat.
I go with “Mix-ul-plic” for pronunciation, since it’s what I grew up with the Super Friends cartoon back in the day. And yeah, love Gilbert’s VO work, very much miss him. And Smallville on Paetron? You’re being too nice to us!
Mxyzptlk was once tricked by the Joker into giving the Clown Prince of Crime his powers. The Joker gave them back because he got bored. Batman has his own impish fiend in Bat-Mite. Watch _Batman: The Brave and the Bold_ to see all of his shenanigans. Also there's a musical episode with Neil Patrick Harris. RIP Gilbert Gottfreid. His last movie role is in the WB Animated movie _Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match_ released this year.
I know exactly what you mean - If there where any specific cartoon I wanted to see I either look it up on the channel side of the newspaper, the TV-guide or text-TV. But when it came to music videos, oh yeah, you had to watch and wait patiently to see If any favorite video and song would show up, there was no info on which music video they would show in order back in the day. Ah, memories! =) Clark's Earth father's name is Jonathan.
Meg did you notice Mr Mxyzptlk turning his Superman action figure into a toy monkey wearing a superman costume? if so, what do you think of that? to pronounce the character's name Mix Yes Spit Lick. and to say his name backwards, Kill Tip Zee Zum.
Superman's pet cat is Streaky the cat sidekick of Krypto the Superdog. There is also a show called Krypto the SuperDog that has Streaky being a super cat.
The Superman/Supergirl cats name is Streaky. In the comics, Streaky has powers like them. I can't remember if he's Kryptonian like Clark, Kara and Krypto.
It’s nice to see Clark’s intelligence get shown throughout the series, it sucks that most adaptations don’t give it much consideration. Though it makes sense because is most filmmakers or show runners can’t grasp the “DETECTIVE” part of world’s greatest detective for most Batman adaptations than Superman’s intellect is usually put on the back burner. That’s why Superman the animated series is my absolute favorite interpretation side by side with Christopher reeves iconic portrayal.
To me, this will always be the definitive version of Mxyzptlk. The design, the motive, the voice; sweet mercy, Gilbert Gottfried was perfect. Definitely better than that version from My Adventures with Superman. Seriously, I like that show, but what the Hell were the creators thinking with the villain reinventions?
ok this show has basically cemented my opinion that we need more snarky clark. seriously, this episode and the whole "im actually superman" bit just made me love the idea of him being a smug bitch
Meg, I know you're excited to watch Justice League and I don't know if you've stated your plans elsewhere, but I would strongly recommend you watch Batman Beyond after finishing the Batman and Superman animated series before you jump into Justice League. While chronologically, Batman Beyond takes place after, it was made before and there are story threads and ideas that play a part in Justice League and won't make sense if you haven't seen Batman Beyond. Just my two cents.
Streaky is the cat's name though in this series he doesn't obtain any superpowers as he did in the comics. Here, he is just an ordinary farmhouse cat. His name was confirmed by Kara/Supergirl in a later episode called Unity.
The best Superman villains are the ones he can't beat through brute strength alone, and force him to think outside of the box. Clark's intelligence always gets overlooked by people for some reason.

I can t wait to see you watch World's Finest, Father's Day and Apokolips Now
streaky the supercat is/was a cat with kryptonian powers, just like the more famous krypto the superdog. while i dont think the cat in this show has powers, it was probably a reference to that cat! especially since the cat in this show does have a streak on its back :)
He does appear in Smallville (though an alternate, more grounded version of him as is the normal practice in the show). When you do you watch-along to Smallville, even if you don't post all the episodes to TH-cam I do hope you'll make them all availible on Patreon. I'm excited for you to get to that show.
If you're wondering, The ginger cat name is "Streaky".
This is one of my favorite episodes! Mxyzptlk is a very underrated Superman villain and I wish the movies would use him. Maybe in Gunns universe, they will. Glad your loving the show, it gets crazier from here!
I love your Superman TAS reactions ❤
That is Streaky the Supercat, usually Supergirl’s pet! Yet another silver age relic. But honestly I’m glad he gets to retire on the Kent family farm, having to save Superman when all of the Earth’s iron was turned into kryptonite seems like a lot of stress for one cat.
This was one of my favorite episodes of the series. I like how fun and funny this was to Superman 😂
Superman has 4 famous pets....Krypto the superdog, Streaky the supercat, Comet the super horse, and Beppo the super monkey 😂
Mxyzptlk is amazing. In the comics Superman dubs him the most powerful villain he’s ever fought.
Hi Meg hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Awesome reaction Mage The Superman animated series is really cool also I subscribed to your channel👍
Sassy Superman is the best.
Clark's Earth father's name is Jonathan.
The first couple of seasons of Supergirl are actually pretty good. Especially the one aired on CBS. Perfectly cast.
Season 3 was the best.
@@robertrogers074 Actually, I liked most of them.
Ooooh finally Mxyzptlk!
Yeah I know I got the name wrong, roll with it.
Thanks for the video! :)
Meg did you notice Mr Mxyzptlk turning his Superman action figure into a toy monkey wearing a superman costume? if so, what do you think of that? to pronounce the character's name Mix Yes Spit Lick. and to say his name backwards, Kill Tip Zee Zum.
I'm guessing the cat is a nod to Streaky the Super Cat
Batman has his own lil man, Bat-Mite, but he is just a super fan boy who causes ruckus tryna spend time or be like Bats
The Cat’s name is Streaky. She also have Super Powers.
He said it at the start: Mix - yes - spit - lick
Superman's pet cat is Streaky the cat sidekick of Krypto the Superdog. There is also a show called Krypto the SuperDog that has Streaky being a super cat.
The Superman/Supergirl cats name is Streaky. In the comics, Streaky has powers like them. I can't remember if he's Kryptonian like Clark, Kara and Krypto.
The orange cat is a reference to Streaky the Supercat, who in the comics is Supergirl's pet.
one of the best episodes in the whole DCAU
To pronounce Mxyzptlk is something glued on my neurons !!!!!!!!!
If you must know. The cat’s name is Streaky
❤❤❤ superman the animated series
Your the first American use the phrase "pull" brilliant!
Mxyzylplk's girlfriend is voiced by comedian Sandra Bernhard
This is my favourite episode
Mr. Mxzptlk and Bizarro have always been tied as my favorite Superman antagonists.
I Love Watching This Episode 😅
Mxyzptk is connected with darkest Batman. I just simply say Mxyzptk Power in Joker’s hands nuff said
Mister Mxyzptlk is always a series highlight, such fun episode, I hope to see him in a live action movie someday
6:36 The Cats name is Streaky.
The cats name is streaky in some interations he has powers too
Batman has a version of Mister Mxyzptlk that goes by the name Bat-Mite
RIP Gilbert Gottfried.
Warning if the Justice League scene you might need to see your dentist
ok this show has basically cemented my opinion that we need more snarky clark. seriously, this episode and the whole "im actually superman" bit just made me love the idea of him being a smug bitch
The cats name is steaky the super cat
In the comics his girlfriend (who’s name I won’t even try and spell) is actually a being from the 10th dimension, and she tried to eat him.
0:06 I knew it! You are Gsptlsnz!
My adventures with superman has a great Mxypilx
He voiced Winnie the Pooh made me lose it.
I tell ya that Mxyzptlk shortie was just a million laughs!🤣
That statue is probably still destroyed, though...
Mix yiz pit lick = Mxyzptlk
i tink the cats name is streaky..
Here's a tip the episodes have the voice cast in the credits.
Love this episode!
While I'm still Team Batman, I have a deep respect and admiration for the Man of Steel, and I'm glad you're enjoying Superman TAS.
Mr. Mxyzptlk and Ms. Gsptlsnz reminds of Roger Rabbit and Jessica Rabbit.
This episode is such a drug trip
Streaky the Cat.
Jay Jay the Jet plane?
Streaky is the cat's name though in this series he doesn't obtain any superpowers as he did in the comics. Here, he is just an ordinary farmhouse cat. His name was confirmed by Kara/Supergirl in a later episode called Unity.
6:24 The cat's name is Streaky
It's worth noting that Mxy's name is pronounced differently in every series, so there's no real correct way to say it, it's just a crazy name
In the comics, there used to be frequent footnotes stating that it's pronounced "Mix-yez-pittle-ick."
Streaky the cat it’s Supergirls cat😁
Be careful about trying to saying his name you say a spell that will unleash a catastrophe
Women just don't understand how important it is to defeat Superman.
His voice is comedian Gilbert Gottfried
