- If you have been to Costco lately, then I know you are thinking about buying the Costco Greenhouse from Yardistry. Are you wondering if it is worth the hefty price tag? Let's talk about the value and the assembly. Also, Amazon has a hoop house by Kingbird which has similar functionality but for much less money. 3:25 The beeswax acts as a hydraulic fluid as it melts it expands, pushing the piston out and opening the vent. When the beeswax cools it contracts back to a solid state, the piston compresses, and the vent closes.

There may be an adjustment screw somewhere on the piston or mounting hardware which would allow you to set the temperature indirectly
I've had a similar "Hoop House" up in North Carolina for three years and it took me about a day and I did it myself. It is considered a "non-permanent" structure so it isn't hiking my property taxes. It is also great for almost all growing purposes.
The one you are showing has more added features (like the zippered doors, and the double d0ooor ties.). Today it costs $175.
A real bargain.
They are great!!
You can buy those zippers for plastic quite inexpensively, fairly easy to install. I put mine on a tarp which probably made it a bit more difficult.
We refuse to buy anything from Amazons as most items are knock offs, copies and crap.

You could install a screen on the underside of the roof vent to prevent mosquitoes from coming in when it’s open.

Yea, that wouldn't work. That arm that pushes the window open would have to go thru the screen.
I guess you could "bag" it. Put the screen over the arm like a bag.
I watched another TH-cam video review on this greenhouse and somehow she did attach a screen to the roof window.
Oh my goodness, this is an INCREDIBLY helpful video!! My husband and I have been debating about this-- I'm so grateful that you spoke so well about the hoop house. We live in Oklahoma and get STRONG winds, but it sounds like the hoop house is the better option for a) not being a gigantic disappointment if the storms destroy it b) the cost c) the flexibility placement & d) VENTILATION because God knows it gets HOT down here!! Thank you again! I totally shared your video with half a dozen people 😅

I have the Kingbird. It came with a few missing tiny squares in the plastic and the zippers started braking in about a month. It has great venting and it's easy to put a sun shade over it. It's pretty easy to move it around the yard. My husband built a wood bottom frame and it's secured to that.
Yes! We move ours all over our yard depending on the season. We also love that it holds moisture so well. Ours are unheated, so in the winter we only water once every 4-6 weeks.

Some stuff she didn’t add:
The material will rip easier. The Velcro for the windows stops working when too much moisture is in the greenhouse, it will not stand up to winds 40 mph or higher, no matter how you have it tied down. I made a parachute. Stakes and cinder blocks couldn’t hold it down. Also, you can’t keep the bugs out. The fabric on the floor won’t stop the roots from breaking through. The seems will also give way after a few months under the sun. You need a wind flow in there often, so don’t think it’s okay to leave the window openings closed. Too much sun will kill everything.

We chose the Costco greenhouse and we love it! We actually had a hoop house first, and never took it out of the box and ended up selling it. The greenhouse doesn’t get too hot in the sun if we leave the door open for cross air ventilation. We are in zone five.
We often open the door as well. It really does make a difference. I want to add a fan this season but haven't gotten to it just yet!
I have two of the kingsbird hoop houses and love them. I do take the cover off in winter , and recover them in April each year. The covers are holding up wonderfully, and I love having the time in there.

This is the perfect comparison, very well done. For me I protect my cold hardy palm trees here in the Philly area from the winter wind. I’m going with the cheaper hoop house since it will only be used part of the year.
I couldn't live without my hoop houses! They fit so much more than the greenhouse. Plus, they are easy to move around the yard depending if I want sun to warm my plants or shade to keep them cooler. Good luck, let me know how it goes!

Im Sorry but I actually love my green house from Amazon sure it's cheaper and the zipper ain't that great but price to price yes I love my green house from Amazon.
I love it too! I have two of them! I love that I can move them anywhere in the yard and they fit so much!!
If the zippers break on you, you can get stick on zippers at Lowes. They are to make doors in plastic sheeting on a construction site.
I ditched the cover of mine after on season, recovered it with 2”x 4” wire fencing and insect barrier screen. This allows rain in. I was able to assemble it by myself. Thumbs up!

But will withstand high winds? And can it withstand cold winter months?

It is! We have had no issues with wind or snow. It has been a lot of fun to have.

Take it from a long time greenhouse grower. You can grow in both of these pretty darn well. The “secret” to greenhouse growing is constant monitoring. Have some automation or other cooling situation. This small they will heat up and cook your stuff in minutes. The opening for cooling in these small houses are not really adequate so a fan or other air mover is necessary. We just put up a 10x20 industrial made house and only paid 1,800 for it which included everything down to screws and the bit they needed! Love, love, love it! 🤙 ❤
Wow!! That is amazing. Where did you purchase it? I definitely agree that the vents on this greenhouse are not enough. I can't even imagine if ours was in the sun!
@@uptosomething6271 we live in Washington state on the outskirts of a town called Chehalis. A young man and his family moved up from Oregon to establish a business to sell greenhouse kits that he puts together per your specs or whatever you want. He does a fabulous job and as I said includes everything to set them up. My husband likes to put wood and chicken wire around the sides but that is pretty much the only things not included. He uses a heavier grade tubing than what you normally see for home growers and in our snow area that can be a lifesaver! Our business comprised 2 houses 100 x 30 and one house 20 x 50 heavy industrial grade and these are comparable. I tell you we were floored when he told us the price and both agreed immediately to purchase one. 😄

If you're not too much in a hurry, Costco is known to take off $300 for this item late fall and/or spring. All in all it's a very sturdy and nice looking greenhouse.

I love mine we live in Wisconsin so it's not year round use. we take the pin out of the roof vent arm when we don't want it to open. it's easy to take out and put in. we use shade cloth hung on one side to help keep the plants from burning in the summer heat
We tool our pin out for the winter too! We heated it this year and wanted to keep it toasty for out plants!
About three weeks ago I commented that we were going to buy the hoophouse mentioned in fhis video.
We got the 15 foot version in white.
Fast-forward its a great deal, lots more usable space than I anticipated.
Start to finish I probably spent 3-4 hours assembling it.
In my part of Northeast PA spring isn't reliable until the end of April to mid May so were not using it for plants yet, but soon.

I bought the Costco greenhouse and I love it. We placed it at the edge of our garden on concrete. We built a metal stud frame to place it on so it is portable. We can move it around if needed. I know it will be too hot in the summer time as mine is in the sun but, I mostly plan to use it for seed starting in the late winter/spring and in the fall and winter for protection. Thanks for the tip about locking yourself in. It has not happened yet so I am so happy to be aware 😂

Thank you. We have a Yardistry pergola. It is really beautiful and sturdy. It absolutely took four strong people to put the roof on. But it is intelligently engineered and simple to construct.

Custom screen for the beeswax vent handles the bug inflow. I like the mobility of the hoop house. You can move it to meet the needs of the season.
Definitely, We move our all around our yard depending on which plants we have inside and the season. It is easy to move, the only hard part is moving the bricks that we line the flap with.
I would suggest to get the green covering instead of the white so you have some shade material over the plants. Just a thought! Plus the reinforcement in the fabrics(white and green) are a plus!
ex nyer! we live in NC now-tornado alley-its torn up 3 hoop houses.....we broke down and bought a greenhouse from the shed guy...its worked out amazing and stays put! it was more than I wanted to spend but has been totally worth it! thanks for your videos!
That is awesome! I am glad you found something that works! Where in NC? We aspire to be ex-Nyer's too. We love the Carolinas but are trapped here for a few more years. We love the Carteret Area but also the mountains. How many tornadoes have you had? Tornadoes scare me! I feel like with hurricanes, at least you know they are coming.
I live in NC too! The trick is to attach the sides of your hoop house to steel posts (I used 4) on the sides and then I bolted the frame to those four posts buried about two feet in the ground. We had no problems with the 60 to 70 MPH winds but the hoop house is beside a wooded area. Make sure and get the one that has a frame all the way around the bottom. Some don't and they will not last. Also, never get the WHITE ones. Get Green. They are easier to shade.
I live in CT so climate is similar to Long Island. This was good info. That said, I'm not a gardener but I've seen the Costo Greenhouses and have been intrigued.

I've been running my King Bird since March of 2022 in upstate NY and I love it. I put it up in the winter and take it down in late spring. This season I put it up in October and plan to take it down in mid May, and it has held through 2 foot snow storms, high winds, and single digit temps like a champ. It won't last forever and it's showing some wear and tear, but I think next year I'll just buy another one so I can benefit from Frankensteining parts together. All together, it's far exceeded my expectations.
I am so glad to hear that! We have had ours for a few years and they have lasted well. For the price I am happy. Hopefully, in the near future they will sell replacement plastic.

The truth is that I could easily continue to use it for years as-is, but since I run it through deep winter, the little tears in the plastic mean a lot of heat escapes, and I need to run 2x 1500 watt oil heaters to survive the January nights, which costs a lot of money. The new one should pay for itself in a few winter months, and give me loads of spare parts.
I live in coastal Georgia. I got my hoophouse for $110 off of Ebay and it works better than my polycarbonate greenhouse and as good or better than my corrugated fiberglass greenhouse. I highly recommend a hoophouse sitting on the ground. The moisture retention and heat retention and distribution is amazing through the winter. Best hundred bucks I have spent on my orchids!

I paid way more for the greenhouse!! That is a great price.
You can disable the roof vent by unscrewing it. Just know when you reattach it you need to do it when it is cool not warm. Then either velcro strap or twist tie it shut to keep the wind from opening it. You can put velcro all the way around the window in the inside then get some screen material and put it up over the window unit to allow it to be open and yet no bugs. You just have to pleat it to make it go around the window opener. Good luck and nice video.

Re the automatically opening roof vent I would control mosquitoes and humidity with clear plastic on a removable light frame and screening on a separate but similar frame, attached to the greenhouse from the inside. From the video this seems doable. Love the green house. In this climate zone the frequent high winds
make the greenhouse a better option.

Sonic mist makers/foggers with a fan is a great way to add humidity and drops the temperature a couple degrees as well.

Wooden greenhouses only last a few year here in Louisiana, I only use galvanized materials for constructing growing equipment.

I bought a similar hoop house and paid a little over 200 first big wind crush it. It was anchored down it didn't blow away the medal pipes crushed

I was standing next to a general contractor in Costco who said "you couldn't buy all the same materials and make it yourself (with all the features) for what they were asking" - He felt it was a great price. It was a no-brainer for me.

My husband felt the same way. In fact, when he went to get ours he said there was a guy loading up multiples onto a flatbed. My husband felt the guy was probably going to resell them and charge to put them together.

I think this hoop house could solve my problem of where to harden off my thousands of soil blocks for our flower farm. Always concerned about rain!
Mine have been great. For the price, I really don’t think you can find a better deal. If you live in a windy area, be sure of line the outside flaps with bricks. One thing to note, it does stay very humid inside of the hoop houses. You would have to really monitor your moisture. Good luck, let me know how it turns out!
@uptosomething6271 is it possible to roll the edges up at all for cross ventilation? Or maybe just the front and back end walls? Really just needing to keep the rain off so that I don't need to move 20+ trays back and forth or worry about them when I'm at my day job.
@@Thecapeonthecorner Tge walls to not roll up, but the doors at both ends do. They also have a screen that you can put down to protect against bugs and critters.
We live in Texas and bought the hoop house a couple of years ago. It was very nice for 2 seasons. Then the plastic in the grid pattern fell out. My husband came in he said, "It snowed in the greenhouse!"
I guess the heat did it in.
Oh no! That's terrible. I am sorry. I will have to keep an eye on mine over the next few winters.

My sis used the kingbird hopp houses for chicken keeping. Before we put the liner on, she used hardware cloth to secure it from predators. The downside was that the plastic shredded against the wire after about a year.

I have seen that Greenhouse at my Costco this Spring and would love to add one to my yard. Guess time will tell. I have a 12×12 building already. Maybe I could add lots of windows and turn it into a greenhouse. This video is making me think about it. I love playing with my plants and would love a way to grow some bonsai trees as well. They do better outdoors I think.

If you husband is a carpenter I wonder why he didn't build one by himself DIY? How much more did it cost to buy the kit versus buying the materials, and how much time did it save him by using the kit? Thanks
He was planning on building one for us for a few years prior to us buying this one. In fact, we had a collection of windows and glass doors that he had saved from jobs to use for that purpose. Life always seems to get in the way though and when I saw this one, I was sold. On the flip side, if he had built me one it likely would have been bigger. While this one holds a lot, space is always a premium and I am always surprised how fast it fills up.
When I saw the # of plants in your hoop house (vs. the sparse ones in the greenhouse) I immediately thought "I know which one is better) 🤗🤣

Central NC-' just put up our first hoop house-- red onions and spinach already well on their way. Looking forward to this growing season. (Tip: we added extra tent stakes and rope because of the popup gusty winds and tstorms.)
Very smart! You cannot just rely on the stakes and rope that they include. I love NC. My grandmother lived there and it is where we go on vacation every year.

Seriously for my application im considering a chicken pen with plastic over it in the spring and a animal barrier without the plastic in the summer. Set it right in my garden and use the ground. Gonna need about 6 of them
That should work great!!You can also consider building out if cattle panels. They are inexpensive and would likely work with the plastic.

Great idea! I asked my husband to look at it and see if he can put up a screen. The arm that opens the vent looks like it is in the way, but hopefully he can figure it out!
That green house gets crazy hot in summer
It sure does!! We have shade (and shade cloth) which helps. An electric fan also helps.
Someone already may have tipped you off, but if you still have installation booklet, it has instructions on how to increase and decrease the temperature. For the vent I built the greenhouse and it was pretty easy to miss. I happened upon it when I was putting together the assembly. I think for every quarter turn clockwise or counterclockwise equals 1°. I’m talking about the entire black part of that rod. It screws and unscrews.

I’ve had the Harbor Freight greenhouse for about 8 years now built it on 6 by 6 timbers which makes it sturdier and taller. On one side I have a 18”x7’ planting bed I boxed in with 2by6s, I plant Beets,lettuce,radishes my season is March through December sometime. Put 2’ shelfs on other side with 1’ on the back of the 2’ raised about 18”. Greenhouse is a 6x8’. I live in a Chicago suburb. Just another way to setup your greenhouse.😊

@@uptosomething6271 make sure you put a brick on the door rail too. The wind sometimes can open it and blow some of the panels out. That’s the only other problem I’ve seen.

You put a simple window screen I would think! Screen, your own wood frame? Smart putting under tree, I agree it would get too hot with out fans etc. you can purchase hoses etc to make your own mister!
Yes! I will definitely do that this season. I wish I had thought of it last year. The mister is a great idea. It would make things so much easier when things get busy!
I got the greenhouse a few days ago and I’m trying to familiarize myself before tackling construction. I wonder if the ceiling vent automatic hinge could be left off in favor of just propping it open with an attached piece of cedar or some other sturdy material? We get a lot of rain over the fall/winter/spring (I’m in the PNW) and if it’s open that will be a ton of water coming in. I’ll check it out when I get to that point. Thanks for the video!

I think I'd figure out some kind of a framed or tacked screen for the inside of the greenhouse vent window to keep the bugs out for sure.

I would cut out a window screen the size of the window and either staple it there or create a screen with the frame and just add some twist locks to hold it in place.

I took a hard look at the Costco Green House at my local Costco store; liked the design but the sloppy way it was assembled (could be the store personnel?) overshadowed its good points.
I can say that we have been happy with the quality, but I know exactly what you mean. When I was at Costco earlier (they have a mini greenhouse also by Yardistry) and I noticed many cracks in the wood. I think it happened while being put together by people that don't know what they are doing, but that could also apply to many homeowners too. I would hate to spend that much money and have a board or corbel split during construction!
We bought a hoop house 4 years ago. It’s holding up ok, but the doors to open are zippered and they didn’t hold up in the weather. This year, hubby has to build me some doors! lol
Sorry to hear that. I have heard that from some other viewers as well. Hopefully one of these enterprising companies will start selling replacement plastic.

Wonder how much snow load the Costco one can support. Thanks for the review, I have a pretty heavy duty greenhouse that's a bit bigger then the Costco one, I might pick up the hoop house at that price though just for overflow, would have to take the cover off every winter though.
Good question! We have not had more than 8 inches at a time since we got the greenhouse. It was fine with that amount of snow, but I can't comment on how it would do with 3 feet. I do feel that it is pretty sturdy, but I don't want to give you bad information.
I helped my neighbor put up this exact same green house. It took 2 days not bad .This green house gets way too hot in the summer and kills all seedlings.If you can put this in a semi shaded area it might work.

i live in the Netherlands and I'm quite sure my hoop house is the same, got it from Belgium. and no vinyl covering, I made it into a catio and fruitcage or fruitio if you will, chicken witer wa smore expensiv ethan the hoophouse but my cats love it, they;re safe and so is my fruit (safe from birds)
except one of my cats likes to destroy my blueberries but hey

Can you add a screen to the roof door that opens independently? or remove the auto-open hardware. Maybe add a door opener so you can control it.
Great ideas. We will see. I did disconnect the roof vent for the winter so that the heat would not escape.
I've seen this greenhouse at Costco, very nice but in Colorado if a structure isn't over 120 square feet then it doesn't require a permit, floor or not. Costco's greenhouse is small about 6 by 6. I bought another brand and I used 6 x 6 pressure treated timbers to set my greenhouse on and drilled a hole clean through in 3 spots to hammer in rebar.

If you're still planning on moving, consider a cheap desert plot of land and planting whole fruit into the ground. It's cheap and definitely the most worthwhile investment i can think of that just about anyone can make, the exponential growth will also beat just about any pick in the exchange within a few years. I think the channel "Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't" just recently put out a video of arugula in the Arizona desert; i know the guy has his own opinion on things but it was still pretty inspiring.

I'm in Arizona in the high desert and I can tell you that gardening isn't easy here! We have very strong spring winds, the sun is hell on plastic and wood, and it's so hot in summer that even with shade cloth plants wilt and go into survival mode instead of producing. It's a constant battle to keep varmints from destroying your garden. The digger birds will rip out your seedlings and dig and thrash soil all over the place looking for grubs. There are a lot of rats, mice, and rabbits that eat your garden. There are also mule deer that are as big as a horse, and javelina too. And lots and lots of insects! Gardening in the desert isn't for the faint hearted!
@@carolinerose5743 and have you ever looked into taurine's effects on plant growth, there aren't any videos on this 30 year old internet about it yet; this is concerning ocean element compound deficiencies (other than iodine) which have killed our ecosystems which I could also prove are completely dependant on migratory sea life (birds carrying mollusks, fish, etc) which were taken away by hydroelectric damming. Not trying to seem off topic though, even though it ties in if you follow, but feel free to let me know if you want some answers.
Could the hoop house be used to create a garden archway with plants trained on it? I figured maybe a metal mesh covering the top and some of the walls and climbing vines could attach. Could it hold the weight?
I think so, if it was something light that you cut back each year. I wouldn't do anything that would get woody (like grapes).

I have had stiff panels similar to these on the Costco GH go airborne the first winter in my GH (which cost $350). I see these are bolted more substantially to the frame. Is it enough? We added more framing to hold on to the plastic. It will bend out and fly! Just not sure....will this happen with this Costco design? Maybe these are a thicker stronger gauge.
We have had pretty significant storms/wind over the last year (since we got this greenhouse) and have not had any issues. They are double-wall polycarbonate, so maybe that is why? Also, I think it is important to mount it to a study base if you live in an area prone to wind.

I live in Central valley California and last years and this years wind and storm has destroyed my hoop house's structure and tarp. I've literally never seen snow in my life, just some rain and wind.. just my personal experience.

Where people seem to not get it exactly right with these g type of Amazon greenhouses is; not reinforcing the hell out of them to make them structurally sound, and not getting the plastic cover right like a drum so that it’s far stronger and looks way better, keeps bugs and critters out better and heats and cools better.

To stop insects from coming in, think about putting a screen on the inside trim so when it opens bugs can't get in and won't effectthe window in any way.

You could just use a weight to keep it closed when u needed too.
Attach some screen in the inside of the vent for mosquito control. That should not be too hard as you could craft a wooden frame to hold the screen in place or just tape it with a heavy duty tape.

I have a similar pop up greenhouse that I like but the cover is like your hoop house with plastic over mesh and after one year the plastic popped out of the holes on about 30 of the cover. Is that happening to your hoop house? How is the cover holding up? I don’t expect perfect durability from something that is that cheap but more than one season would be preferred. Thanks.
I have heard that from other people as well. We have had ours though two winters and so far no plastic coming out.
