Fun Fact: Cutting someone's hair without their consent is considered assault.

This is exactly why I’m not afraid of my mother anymore. If she ever tries to use physical violence on me again, she can’t threaten me with abandonment or imprisonment anymore. Instead, I can threaten her with jail time and a criminal record.

The thing is, that shouldn't even be an excuse. People like to think kids are extremely safe, but there are very few laws protecting children from their parents.

    • @lightsidesoul
      @lightsidesoul ปีที่แล้ว +74

@@jeiku5041 The problem with that is that
A: A lot of kids don't know about those laws
B:Even if they know, a large percentage don't know where to report it, or have too many trust issues to tell an adult.
And C: There is so much bias to believe adults over children that an abusive parent can easily just use the "discipline" excuse, and claim the kid is blowing the problem out of proportion.

For the beard story, even if he can't claim assault where he lives, he can probably sue for damages. There's a famous case known as the hairy hand case which sets a precedent that physical appearance does have value, and tarnishing someone's appearance can make you liable for damages.

    • @ngotemna8875
      @ngotemna8875 ปีที่แล้ว +92

The hairy hand incident is more about the doctor promising that the hand will be 100% back to its original state.
But the original state of the hand was without hair
(He had severe burns and they transplanted skin from his chest to his hand, which made it hairy)
So it's less about appearance itself and more about the doctor not keeping his promise.

@@ngotemna8875 It's not exactly the same case, you're right, but the fact is that the court made a ruling that someone's physical health being affected isn't necessary to receive compensation, and even simply their appearance being damaged makes the other party liable for damages. They didn't find the doctor liable because he HARMED the patient, but because he damaged their APPEARANCE.

One time CPS pulled me and my sister out of our elementary classes to question us _before_ contacting our parents. Why?
Because I'd offhandedly mentioned we were left alone at home "all the time." I was 10, my sister was 12, and our parents would be gone for a whopping.... 2 days, if that. They'd leave us in the afternoon, come home the next afternoon, maybe once every couple of months. They would go to SCA events that happened during the school year, and never during the school week. Plus, the last babysitter we had they found out would steal alcohol and invite her boyfriend over after we'd gone to bed.
Don't call CPS lightly. They treat every case as if they're expecting to find children chained up in the backyard drinking out of a dog bowl.

something happened to me when i was younger relating to cas (canadian cps). i was a teenager visiting my mom and after certain events transpired, i felt unsafe and wanted to go back home. bad news is that my dad lived 6 hours away, so it wasnt very simple. i called my aunt and asked to stay with her until i could get picked up in a week or so, and she agreed. i was waiting to get picked up when i got a call canceling that. my mom threatened to call CAS on her, even though she wasnt doing anything wrong, and forced her hand, leaving me in danger. i ended up calling CAS on my mom and explained everything, she nearly lost custody of my brother and i had a way home. dont fucking threaten CAS on someone to force their hand

The irony that in some Australian towns, when they discover a new aquafer or similar and the bottle companies poured in wanting to buy it out from the town. But instead the town made selling bottled water illegal, period. They built fountains on every street corner that people can fill up from
You could bring bottles of water into the town, but selling bottles of water inside town limits was very illegal
More people should do this tbh

Yes, that's nice, but you have to remember one very important thing: the water is as clean as the pipes are. They have to be cleaned regurarly for the water to be safe to consume. You know what, now i just thought about an interesting thing. What is more polluting? Pipe maintainance or bottling water. Probably the latter, but it's still worth researching the answer.

That's not a possibility in certain areas. My family does do tap water because of the fact the water where my mom grew up was just minerals from what I understand. Due to mining in the area, the water became very poor and was the worst taste- you couldn't even use it in cooking so bottle water was sold alot because of the water issue and a few years ago when I went to visit family there, the water was better- but still terrible and tasted metallic. It's unfortunate not everywhere has clean water, not even in the US as my family lived in northern Minnesota. It's just- the water contaminated from what I've heard from my mom was related to the mining industry in the area.

Anyway, her hair lightens especially in the summer to the point where she does have some streaks in her hair that are platinum blonde. My daughter was 4 at the time and I was pushing her in her pram through a park. This woman started screaming at me, claiming I had bleached my daughter's hair. According to her, hair can only be one colour. It cannot have streaks of any other colour unless you dye it, and she started calling social services (UK CPS) on her phone right in front of me. I walked away, she took a bunch of photos of me (without my permission) and screeched that I was an abuser, an unworthy parent yada yada. Some people are weird.

CPS chooses to remove children that are not in any kind of danger but when my abusive parents were beating us up to the point of braking bones (and not taking us to the doctor after and just let us heal on our own) burnt half my leg as Punishment (I was 6), punished without food or water to the point I had to be rushed to an E.R. for dehydration and almost didn't make it, forced feed my brother so many meds they permanently ruined my brother's imunine system, keeping me and my brothers locked under lock and key (sometimes in a bedroom, sometimes in a small bathroom, sometimes they'd cut the electricity, sometimes outside in a gared area, imposible to get out from with nothing but a roof above our heads, dog shit and urine in the floor, trash all around and since there weren't any walls we were still exposed to the elements regardless of the ceiling) and then claimed we were dificult kids that were being disrespectful and they were just discipliing us according to their religious beliefs so CPS decided they shouldn't intervene out of fear of infringing on the religious freedom of a good Christian married couple.
I was the only one that got out (I did so when they got sloppy when they actively tried to kill me in a blind rage episode because I dared comunicate with people outside the household, I was an adult, I manged to get away but for some technically I wasn't able to sue them ) my two younger brothers are now both adults and still live there (assuming they are stilk alive) I've tried the police and every lawyer I can afford, since they are adults the only way to get them out is for them to contact the police on their own but since I managed to get out and even dared have contact with people on the outside before that now ny brothers don't have access to phone/internet/contact with anyone, so they won't be able to ever call the police even if they weren't scared to the point of being afraid to do so. I still feel gulty and still try finding help for them every couple of months but police insist they are adult so nothing to be done unless they are the ones requesting it or I get evidence. Neighbors refuse to declare what they have heard because they don't want to get involved.
I HATE THIS SYSTEM to top it all nothing would have happened if my grandmother and the church wouldn't have convinced my mother to have me and marry my abusive father instead of allowing her to abort me. I wouldn't have suffered, if they didn't get married (which they did just because of the pregnancy) my brothers wouldn't have been born.

Australian here. Tap water is an interesting situation for me bc I’m rural. When we first moved out here, the water at the house we lived in was un-drinkable, as the gutters and tank were filthy - so much so that the guy we had come clean our tank called us that night (clearly drunk) and said “I’m sorry, I put everything I had in there, I tried, I’m sorry”. We had full weeds growing in our gutters, up to 50cm (~20in). The water where we are now is far better, as that place was a crappy rental. However the other conundrum is that water from cities like port Macquarie now taste like chlorine and can make me physically sick - I will end yo curled up with what feels like the worst stomach cramps ever. So I do understand drinking bottled water if it’s dangerous or you’re sensitive to it, but ffs if it was that bad you’d’ve said something by now.

So, the aromantic ace genderfluid story and the response that one genius had to it (about being less sinful as they aren’t interested in adult activities) reminds me of something I once said to a friend on why I am no longer a Christian:
In this type of context, simply ask if they’ve ever done the two person mambo before marriage. Then simply say at least they won’t have to worry about that with you. The more excuses they make for why they’re in the right, the better this line will hit:
“If you are following a religion in which you have to make excuses or loopholes or ‘I did that but repented immediately after so it’s ok’ statements in order to feel like you follow that religion, you do not follow that religion.”

I mean…you could find a friend who’s willing to pretend to be your partner (choose someone you love spending time with anyways, it’ll be a lot more fun that way), make it seem real, go as far as getting engaged, tell your mother “this is the one, but we don’t think it’s the right time for marriage and kids”. If she’s that desperate, she’ll push for a wedding, and offer to pay for it if you use money as an excuse. Let her. Then call everything off at the last minute. “Oh, we broke up. Yeah, we just realized we didn’t really like each other that much. Oh? You paid for everything already? I’m sorry, you offered, but we did say we weren’t ready yet. But if I ever fall in love like this again, I’ll be sure to give you full control over the next wedding too!”

In most places in America the Tao waters perfectly safe, there's some places with old lead pipes or whatever, but that takes a combination of city water and poor funding of which which is rather rare esp due to the fact that a lot of people on the more water rich east coast get their water from a nearby aquifer so for most any filtration is more so just to prevent the taste of some (harmless) minerals

The CPS story kinda hit home. My middle sister lied about being abused by our parents when she was a teenager, to the point that someone actually called CPS on them. Thankfully they determined that my parents were fine. I had no idea about this until I was much older, that day I'd just asked if I could play with one of the neighborhood girls.
My parents were by no means perfect, in fact I could list several instances that would be quite fitting for this subreddit, but it was nothing like what she was claiming. And to have it almost result in losing my home when I was 8? Absolutely awful.

  • @andre_601

Regarding 5:17 or so it reminds me of a story I remember...
My father, who once owned a restaurant, always told our female staff that they are free to do whatever is necessary if a customer behaves quite badly (As in sexually assaulting her or similar).
This once resulted in one of our staff hitting a customer with a metal plate she used to serve drinks and food on after he tried to touch her breasts and private area.
He obviously came back with the police accusing her of attacking him without any reasons. But her, my father and some other customers told the police what actually happened, which resulted in the man being taken away and her not dealing with any legal issues as it was considered self-defense what she did.
So... Yeah... Was an interesting thing.

as an aussie, the people drinking those pallets and pallets of bottled water are (I would think) typically either construction workers with no access to running water on the job or the few people who don't have safe running water and/or rely on rainwater. like for example at the start of the year I was at a place where they did use bottled water to pad out their rainwater supply. there's also a suburb near where I live that if the tap water source has an algal bloom the water is undrinkable, and my mother used to teach at the school there and relied on bottled water during that. but yeah genuinely I don't know anyone who drinks bottled water at home on the regular outside of some very narrow circumstances

Unfortunately, the building behind my house was built illegally close, so it’s not even like a foot from our fence. Their bedroom (I think that’s what it is, maybe a living room?) looks directly into our backyard and kitchen (and bathroom if they’re trying). The creep in the apartment likes to watch us. He keeps the light on in that window almost all the time. I’m pretty sure he regularly checks outside or something, because whenever I go into the backyard, he’ll suddenly appear in the window or on his porch. He literally stares right at me with no shame. He never talks, never says hello, just creepily stares at me. He doesn’t do this to my grandmother, only me (21 F). Unfortunately we can’t do anything about it, because not only does the apartment complex owner have connections in city hall, but even if we called the police on him, what are they going to do? Give him a warning. Then what is the creep going to do? Lash out? Harass us more than he already does? Money talks, and it fucking sucks.

So there’s this kid that goes to a school my mom works at who always came to school unbathed and with oversized clothes. One day he gets new shoes and he seems uncomfortable wearing them. Later his mom sends pictures of blisters on his feet, claiming that they’re bruises on his thumb and threatens to call CPS on one of the teachers. I don’t know if there’s a conclusion to this, it just seems that child abusers like to project the cause of the problem on others.

I'm just gonna say: I unironically drink Desani. I know it's not good (At least it's not nestle), but like... It tastes fine to us. Our city's tap water, while perfectly fine and potable, comes from a lake with a distinct species of algae. This algae is harmless, but no amount of purification can fully remove it. Most relevantly, nothing can fully remove the flavor. Dasani is just the most consistently "flavored" water in my own opinion, and seems to be shared with the others I live with. While for all I know it's treated cat piss, it's better than what we got.

Just to clarify the whole “water from a swamp” thing, this is kinda true.
Big companies will buy the closest body of water and use that for collecting water. “Making it clear” doesn’t literally means turning the color of the water clear, it means they filter the ever living hell out of the water (including filtering out the minerals) and then shoving artificial minerals into the filtered water. This is why a lot of bottled water tastes so bad.
