I don't know much about the laser, but you can get more silent stepper motor drivers for 3d printers. Like the TMC 2208 or 2209.
Looks great. If you added some led strip around the perimeter, it would look cool in the dark on a dim setting, with all the shadows of the sand dunes and reflections on the bearing. Under lit would be cool too.
Another ingenious and fun project. Oh yeah, the table looks great too.

I got the machine for free so it wasn't my first choice. It unfortunately doesn't have a usb / SD card option so does require a pc hooked up to run. If I did it again it would be a must to have sd card reader / run code off the machine directly.

Great work! The only thing that, in my opinion, is missing here is side lighting, without which the drawing on the sand is hard to see. You can try hiding the addressable LED strip around the perimeter under the glass to illuminate the sand texture from different angles.
It's harder to see on camera than in real life.
where is the laser machine
get someone to hook this up to the internet, then we can all "print" on your sand table!!!
Only thing I would add is 1 or more small vibratory motors to reset it.

If you use baking soda instead of sand the features will be much “sharper”.
Great idea but wouldn't baking soda absorb moisture?
Why drill 4 holes in each corner, couldn’t you just drill 1 larger hole in each corner?
