We use ethyl mercaptan tubes to identify ethyl mercaptanin in the vapour phase of LPG. The tube manual contained in " the calibration is valid for methyl mercaptan in the air " , is the calibration valid for ethyl mercaptan in LPG vapour phase? (tube Mercaptan 0.1/a 81 03281)
The Mercaptan 0.1/a can be used in propane. In our lab we observed no reading on the tube in 100% propane. However, when we tested in an atmosphere of 90% propane, nearly 10% propene and ppm levels of ethyl mercaptan the readings on the tube were 30 to 50% higher than the actual ethyl mercaptan. For example, a sample with 5 ppm ethyl mercaptan resulted in readings of ~6.5 to 7.5 ppm (this varies between 30% and 50% based on the particular batch of tubes).
Thank you this is a great Video. I have used draeger to measure H2S content for a while but I have a question. How accurate is the reading if we use an expired tube? I have tried it myself and I found no significant difference between the expired (march 2019) and the new one (july 2024). But I need an expert opinion to prove this thank you.
Dräger does not recommend to use tubes past the expiration date. However, it is quite possible Dräger-Tubes may provide very good results for some time beyond the expiration date stamped on the package. This may depend on the particular reagent system or storage. If the tubes are stored within the temperature range on the back of the package (typically 5 °C to 25 °C) and kept in the package (not direct sunlight) the reliability of the tubes is guaranteed by Dräger through the shelf life on the package. Tubes stored in cool storage (not frozen) at the customer site may be very good for some time longer. Dräger does not guarantee the integrity of the results of tubes past the expiration date.
A question, instead of 5.5 mg/L the reading of the example is not 4.5 mg/L?
