Okinawan Karate can not be compared to sports karate, which is beautiful but often insufficient in an unfair street fight. Shorin ryu was created for self-defense and most techniques are "dirty". Strikes and kicks to the joints, groin, eyes and joint locks. Therefore one would have to drop most effective techniques in a tournament setting or just stick to kata. This is the origin of Karate and more comperable to systems like Krav Maga than kumite in Shotokan, which uses a kendo style ippon system.
