In FL, no snow or I would try this, but I am so frugal that I would have placed it over a skein of yarn underneath atop a plastic liner and see what you get with all the dripping dye ... worst case you could overdye it or speckle it etc. I admire your bravado in how you freely experiment and you have enriched my life so much, you make it all so playful and user friendly yet with professional looking results. Bravo!!!
Most of my roving lately has been gifted to me by my goddaughter.if she were to see this, I imagine that I'd be gifted with a lot more, and a whole lot of Koolaid. In purple, a long with a request for a Dr Who length scarf. I also have a Rambo lamb fleece to spin up. I'm told that the grey wool accepts dye really well, so it might be a lot of fun to do this with that, to. I love, though the effect of broken colours from food colouring. Amazing videos, all of them

Yay!!! Looking back at that snow pile is hilarious because I had to SHOVEL all of that snow all by myself! (It was also superbowl weekend when I filmed these videos.)
idk if you live close to a Walmart, or a WinCo, but they have the greens and blues. also, with how much you use the Kool aid, you might buy it from Amazon in bulk. instead of the ice blue twisted Kool aid, I think you would get a nicer toned blue with either berry blue, or even the regular blueberry lemonade. it won't be as light, but it's a lot easier to find than the ice twists.
I think I would have sprinkled the colors parallel to the sides of the tub instead of perpendicular so that the red wouldn't run down to the orange, etc. possibly leaving more yellow and blue in the final product.
Hey, nice vid! :D I just tought about a similar technique while watching this video : what if you froze the colored water into ice cubes and then put them randomly on the flattened out yarn just like the snow, and the finish the process normally? I think that would end up with cool patterns.
I just love finding generic anomalies within anything. Did you notice that @ 14:01 a kangaroo (minus the ears) emerged on the right side? I just love things like that. And kangaroo's always remind me of alpacas and llamas. More yarn!!! LOL Anyway, I just thought it was neat.

I do have a question though. I want to use one color on a skein. Which color would you suggest using and how many packs of KoolAid? I want the color to be vibrant and beautiful,because it was given to me as a present. Should I choose a skein to do a gradient. How would I do that? Also since we don't have snow, what would the process be? Please help? And thank you for such an awesome video
Sure! Let it heat in the oven (using oven safe dishes etc) for 30 min or so at 175 F (120 C). You don't need to get it boiling or steamy for this to work. Good luck!
What I'm curious about is how long do the colors last in the yarn through wear and washing. Does kool aid and food coloring fade quicker over time than say a commercial acid dye
Jessica Buero I don't wash my handknits a bunch but I have items dyed with food coloring and koolaid that have lasted years with no fading. I have yet to do a side by side comparison, but I didn't get any fading from my wash test. I'm suppose that commercial dyes may last a bit better since they are formulated to dye fibers.

Food coloring is less light fast than commercial dyes, as it was designed and approved for food vs textile coloring, but for the fading I've seen I had to leave an object in direct sunlight for months. Some others have observed some fading with direct sunlight on a smaller time scale. I hope to explore the fading a bit more this summer.
I think it would be hard to get the wax out of the yarn. Right now I'm open for trying many things, but chocolate, wax, and dairy are not really on my list. ;)
If you left it on a totally flat surface, you would end up with a brownish red where the liquid pooled. This would have worked better on mesh versus a drying rack because the snow wouldn't fall off so easily and I could have stacked more snow around the edges.
I tend to lean more towards a snow cone myself. It really makes me miss those days as a kid trying to get as much of the brightly colored flavoring as possible...

It sounds fun! I think you would also get different patterns laying ice cubes on top and then sprinkling those with the dye.

i have done this but use a baking pan.i put yarn in baking pan put snow on top then dye.
I wonder what would have happened if you'd had another skein in the bowl underneath?

would jello powders work the same? green should be easier to find then. or would the gelatin mess up the yarn?
