- Metallica perform "Hit the Lights" off of their 1983 debut album "Kill 'em All" with former bassist Jason Newsted, Dave Mustaine who is now playing with Megadeth, former guitarist Lloyd Grant, former bassist Ron McGovney, former guitarist Hugh Tanner, Death Angel singer Mark Osegueda and Soul Rebels. Recorded live @ The Fillmore in San Francisco, California on December 10th, 2011 (the last of four Metallica 30th birthday concerts).

Jason Newsted has such an entertaining intensity when he plays live. Cliff was a better bassist but I always found Jason to be a better performer.

Both are great and both are different styles of bass play

Jason's a better showman, at least. The man's backing vocals, facial expressions, and head banging are top notch. Cliff was great at head banging too but I haven't seen his facial expressions and his backing vocals were perfectly fine but not as good as Jason's.

Metallica and Megadeth are intrinsically tied together forever. From one band came two. Not just bands, but the two best thrash bands to ever come into existence. Because of these two bands, many kids around the world had an outlet, it may have even saved their lives at some point. For this I am forever indebted. Thank you Metallica and Megadeth!!

Kirk > Dave in terms of lead guitar playing. Don't be a brainwashed Megatard. Dave was good on first 3 Megadeth albums when it comes to lead guitar and that's it. Kirk has over 100 memorable catchy solos.

***** His solos on countdown and rust are mostly generic and some of them are almost completely same. Very few exceptions to this. I know this since i can actually play them without breaking a sweat (same goes for playing Kirk's solos). Some exceptions being: Five Magics, Lucretia, Sweating Bullets and High speed dirt.
That's only 5 solos... Don't even mention Holy Wars solo, 50% of that solo is an improvisation on the spot, it fits the song but isn't impressive at all. I've played it live while not taking a single look at the guitar and goofing around the stage...
The difference here in playing Dave's solos and Kirk's solos is that Kirk's solos don't all sound the same, there are lots of important bends and small licks that define them, you have to get into the solo completely to make it sound right. When it comes to Dave's solos, let's just say this - I've played Five Magics solo without learning it before or trying it out on the spot. No problem.
But this ain't about how hard it is to play, it is about how a solo sounds. Kirk plays music, Dave only wanks it after first 3 albums since he is completely overwhelmed by Marty's playing and doesn't need to write good solos.

I'm sad Dave didn't play his original solo...he destroys Kirk imho. Not that Kirk's bad, I just like how Dave is more of an overly technical shredder instead of wah freak.
The original solos sound so... flat and boring compared to Kirk's.
When I hear Dave's solos, it's obvious that he had spent more time with the songs, and his tremolo/32nd notes are much more solid than Kirk. It also sounds like the rest of the band are pushed to keep up with him. When I hear Kirk I hear the opposite, and I hear him using all his Satriani licks and FX to flesh out his leads, making the band sound instantly more mature, and less aggressive. Which played a major role in their commercial success, for better or worse.
Kirk is in the band because at the time he seemed more productive and less douchy. I know Dave sounds flat to some people (myself included at one time), but when listening to the pre Cliff SF gigs, it's obvious (at least to me) that Metallica were one of the most extreme metal bands on the planet - full speed and technique, nothing held, no ballads, no pretense, just the fastest guitar music possible outside of LA/DC hardcore - , and they never sounded quite like that again.

Oh man, Ron McGovney's look of disgust when he's standing by Dave Mustaine. He's all, "You ruined metal for me, you smacked out ginger fuck." I may be projecting.
Dave wasn't pissed about Kirk taking "HIS" solo. Dave has played rhythm for years. He doesn't solo very much at all. In fact, he's admitted publicly he that he allows Glen or Chris to take over the solos where he feels they'd be better at it. He is a very humble guy. Unlike Lars Ulrich who, despite playing in Metallica since the beginning, can't keep a solid kick through an entire song and pushes the band to rush the song. I think if Dave was frustrated about anything, it'd be that.

m4tt3m50n It was never really that good. Pull up old concert footage and enjoy all of the "Out of the Pocket" moments. His foot has always been weak. Listen to any real drummer live and listen to how perfect their roles sound compared to Lars. Even back in the 80's. He was a joke.

Justin Russo These days you can hear the mistakes constantly. It's like he was trying much harder back in the "day", but now it's like he hasn't got a clue any more. I though initially he was trying to do some weird off beat stuff to sound more edgy, but now when I hear them play I get angry as all I'm doing is counting his missed beats, mistiming and blatant extra fills where he is trying to dig himself out of a major snafu.
Jason's additional vocals is what makes this song so bad-ass! SEARCHAAAANNNNNDDDDD. SEEK. AND. DESTROYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm just now finding these videos, but I can't help saying that it does my heart good to see all the players on stage just jamming the fuck out. The old issues may be there still, but here they all look happy and content. That makes me happy!

the original line up is as i said above, cliff was added and they kicked ron out, and then they kicked dave out and hired kirk, so James Lars Kirk and Cliff is the second official line up, adding Jason is the third official line up, and rob is the fourth. :) hope this helps

+Gerson Giron First off there would have been no Kirk if Mustaine did not get fired, secondly James would have never given up his guitar just to do vocals, his loves doing rhythm just has mush as he loves singing and thirdly we would have gotten something completely different and who knows if we would have liked it...I myself like the fact we have both Metallica and Megadeath, two different sounds but the best of both worlds..
James is a better guitarist than Kirk though.

Kirk for lead and Mustaine for rhythm, or james doing rhythm and Mustaine doing what he does for Megadeth, and Kirk only lead.

Renascence If you've pay attention to what Kirk has always said, he comes across as a "Peace, Love, and Happiness" kind of guy. He plays metal music but he really likes every one and to the best of my knowledge has never had a bad word to say about anyone. Still think Dave is the better Guitar player tho... :D
