- Bees had been living in this backyard shed for many years. The homeowners didn’t know how long the bees had been there, but they were planning on demolishing the shed and they wanted to keep the bees safe so they called me to relocate the colony.

Respect for the owners that wanted the bees to be relocated and knew how important they are.
It's against the law to kill bees but people still do it. I've saved three bee hives from people's yards I worked on. I called people who work with bees and they came and got the bees. One couple had a huge bee hive next to their attic. They didn't even know it until I told them.
@@bobcatbigpaws5597 where is it illegal to kill honey bees? It's not illegal in Virginia USA at least. They aren't native to North America and aren't federally protected.
@bobcatbigpaws5597 I can't find any federal or state laws that back up your claim. Using certain pesticides are illegal in some places though.

Yeah I agree. The problem is the nuisance bee colonies. What's the most humane way to dispose of them since in our area we don't have bee keepers to call like yourselves?

As a fellow beekeeper, I am really impressed with the intention and explanation for each action taken. Clearly lots of love for these special creatures.
So how do you think she knows whether or not to wear protection before having the encounter? I'm certain the people called her the moment they noticed there's a hive. Does she take the location and her experience to come to a conclusion? I know she doesn't like wearing the suit because she's afraid the gloves will cause her to crush the insects. I don't think it's edited out.
@@Nirmiti. She has the protective gear with her in her car - she wears it if the bees sting her.
Bees only sting when they feel threatened, and she knows how to keep them calm. So she doesn’t wear it often.
@@prax-alittlecrazy2422 You didn't answer the question I asked Becker. Currently, the only way to keep Western honeybees calm is to smoke them. Every last one of their hives has guard bees. Being so close to them for hours, will naturally make them scared. Whenever she accesses their hive without protection, she uses the bare minimum amount of smoke at the start of most of the the relocation processes to ensure they cooperate. You're right about this: The back of her pickup truck *_does_* have the veiled mask and the thin version of the stereotypical beekepers' gloves. That's been heavily implied from the very, very beginning. The cause of the implication is she's a beekeeper.

as a beekeeper for 10 years I have to point out that she has a very calm manner when performing those actions which is why she is using so little smoke or protective gear. Also, when bees are in the wild they usually are calm because of their rich resources and their ample supply of honey and pollen because beekeepers havent taken them!
Is there a way for beekeepers to provide flowers as pollen for the bees in order to stop them from being so aggressive and feel that sense of "richness" from their natural environment?

@@moscoelucilfer5829 bee hives are collective minds which means they are affected by the balance of their ingredients. Each bee has a role and is happy to fulfill it if it cannot then the balance is broken and so the hive becomes more aggressive. Of course you can add flora close to the hives but you would need really much of it to cover their needs, I mean lots and lots of flowers!
@atsalos That makes sense. I watched another beekeeper channel who placed his hives in his personal garden. It looks very enriching for the bees, so I imagine he doesn't deal with much aggression. Thanks for clarifying. 😊

Yeah I wonder if it's good for the bees to put back comb you have licked on? I dont know anything about bees so I'm just curious
From the age of about 4-10 years our house was full of bees which had nested in a dormant chimney. Even though my parents had them removed more came for the honey so we just learned to live with them. My younger brother and I, with no protective gear whatsoever used to daily collect the swarms of bees which came down the wrong chimney and covered the net curtains blocking out the light. We would lift up the heavy bee covered curtains, open the windows and gently scoop and shoo them all out. We never got stung and never wore any protective gear. Throughout the decades I continue to rescue bees and pick them up bare handed. I am not a bee keeper and have never studied them other than when we observed them as children. Bees know those who are friendly towards them. 🐝

HA! Thank you! Honestly, it’s one of the best feelings in the world EVERY SINGLE TIME. And it always makes me feel like I’ve done my job to the best of my abilities for the health and wellness of the colony.

The bees weren't showing respect to the people living there. Bees are not our saviour. Plants were making food before there were bees
Reverence that comes form knowledge.
I like the point about preserving the orientation of the comb when moving it from the old hive to the boxes. Those little aspects of working with the bees and respecting their work and organization seems like the mark of really good beekeeping.
If you don't put them with the right orientation unsealed cells will start spilling their honey which is much more work for the bees, so one must always care for the orientation
I'd love to know the reason she didn't just turn the box on its side.

This is the most incredible, beautiful thing I’ve ever seen! When you removed the wall paneling, it was stunning. I’ve only recently become enamored with bees after finding solitary leafcutters in my garden & nurturing them. My garden has never been healthier, and full of life….not just flowers & bees, but a perfect little symbiotic ecosystem that never fails to excite me. I had so much to learn. My gentle, sweet, patient bees have taken me on the most incredible personal journey - a journey I didn’t know I desperately needed - and they’ve made me a stronger, smarter, emotionally healthier person. Bees, even when they’re not working together, collectively, for and with a hive, are inherently magnificent. One year with the bees has been more valuable for my personal growth than 10 years of post graduate studies, 3 psychology degrees, and a PhD after my name. ❤️🥰

I get SO excited for removals like this that have the potential to be so big. When I got there, the AWESOME homeowners said they had no idea how many years the bees had been there… and I started to get very excited for what I might find behind that wall.

I used to be very afraid of bees, having been stung a few times as a kid - that is until I started gardening. I knew I was dependent on bees for pollination. I started to see them as co-workers so I planted bee attracting flowers around my veggies. I remember the first time I noticed honey bees coming in greater numbers. I had to laugh at being so excited to see them! I moved passively around them and they never bothered me. I was also able to meet the big black bumble bees, which to me are the fuzzy teddy bears of bee world. They love my hyssop (such a great plant!), and seem to fall asleep with their heads buried in the blossoms. Maybe some day I'll try beekeeping?
there are different kinds of bees...and wasps...that are NOT traquil and will sting and sting a lot.

I have almost no experience with bees but I'm sure I witnessed a special process.
They know. If I went into our hive "bareback", I would maybe get stung once, and it would be because I made a mistake of some sort. My ex... she couldn't go near the thing without full suit. And she would still get stung.

Wow Erika, that is a huge hive. And what fun to find the queen in that population. Are feral hives common in Texas? Almost non-existent here in New England, the varroa mite is rampant. I also use nitrile gloves, I still get stung sometimes, but it makes it much easier to remove the stinger. Thx! Eric.
yeah, i also live in new england and i've only ever seen normal-huge sized hives. i am not a keeper, though
Ah, she said that nitrile gloves are not at all sting proof, and she doesn't recommend that they be used in place of proper gloves.
They are all over my part of Texas 🤣 but, declining in population I hear yearly. Glad to have people saving them. I have a fear of them or I would try.
I found it remarkable that such a huge, old hive had but ONE queen! I would imagine that this hive sent out swarms many times over the years and had created many new queens.

Thank you for another great video. Amazing that this huge hive fitted in the two layered box/new hive.
A lot of the comb wasn’t being used by the bees here. And it was all very old and dark. What didn’t go into the new hive here gets removed, taken home, and put out in my beeyard for these bees and all my others to forage from if they can find anything salvageable.
My thought too. That colony was far too big to fit into 2 hive boxes!

I am constantly amazed by the remarkable abilities of honey bees and the monumental structures they create. These tiny creatures, through their hard work and collective efforts, construct honeycombs that are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The intricate hexagonal cells, perfectly formed with mathematical precision, showcase the sheer dedication and ingenuity of these remarkable insects. The scale of their achievements, relative to their size, fills me with respect and wonder for the incredible capabilities of these buzzing architects.
I suffer really badly from bee stings, so there’s no way I could go anywhere near a hive. But it’s awesome to see you doing such wonderful work. Bees are amazing and we should do everything possible to protect and preserve bee populations everywhere. And I do absolutely love honey 😋

Now I know where all the bees are hiding. I never see bees like I use to. That bee hive was amazing. I could just taste that honey. I buy local honey from a farmer who uses his own bees. It's the best honey I've ever had. I think this lady is the bee whisperer.
That’s an awesome hive! I have removed bees from walls before with a circular saw. It’s important to set the blade depth just deep enough to cut the wall sheathing without going much deeper. This avoids damaging any hidden wires like in this wall, which often require repair far more costly and time consuming than fixing the wall.

I love how gentle you are as opposed to just vacuuming them up. I understand they’re just personal choices though and neither is wrong. Amazing you found that queen, and I actually quickly spotted her this time without having to pause and look! It’s also really cool how that final bunch seemed to march right in with a bit more encouragement. You’ve really made me appreciate bees, and your work! My boyfriend works outside and he’s had to deal with wasps and I always tell him that bees must be treated differently, DO NOT kill them or let property owners harm them and call a beekeeper! I’ve also told him how if he can relax in the rare occasion they sting, they can wiggle their way out, and how if he sees one on the ground it might need water or could be cold. And I’ve just told him a lot of random interesting bee facts because they’re just neat and he’s appreciated them too lol.

As a native Floridian, it feels incredibly comforting nostalgic to see an exposed shed wall with an 8ft bee hive inside of it. We had something similar in my back yard for about 10 years, they would come and go and we'd leave them alone because they didn't go out of their way to harm us at all. We had to remove it when hurricane Irma was about to hit because we got nervous that the whole shed was going to come down. Luckily someone was willing to come save the bee's literally the day before the hurricane arrived and they all went on to live in a nice home.
The shed survived to and a different group of bee's have returned to the shed recently, but my sister is thinking about taking up bee keeping, so she's letting them say for now. Thank you for doing one of the most important jobs out there, not just saving animals but animals that are incredibly valuable to the planet! Bee's are so fascinating to me and I love seeing them being treated with the respect they deserve. Good luck on your next job, I know another shed of bee's needs you.

From my understanding, worker bees and drone bees will try to make a new colony on their own.

She did a great job. Leaving the hive there until dark (or the next morning) and then transporting it would have saved a few hundred more, but she may have had time constraints.

I have watched a number of her videos and each time I respect more and more. I know bees are valuable for pollinating plants. However, one of the main reasons I respect her so much is the care she takes in moving bees from one location to another. However, the main reason I respect her so much is my extreme fear of bees, wasps, and hornets.
